COVER: FREYA FENNWOOD, IN THE NEW “FREYA” THIS PAGE: JOHN LOCKWOOD CHECKS OUT A TRADITIONAL GREENLAND PADDLE AT THE KAYAKCLUB IN ILULISSAT, GREENLAND.

WEL

COME

TO PY

GMY! Dear Paddler,

My daughter, Freya, and I met up in Sissimut, Greenland this summer for the 2015 Greenland National Kayak Competitions. I flew in from Shanghai, China, and Freya flew in from Seattle, WA. She brought with her the Freya, a new kayak named in her honor, that she and I had worked on together for almost three years. It was a really fun father/daughter project.

Freya learned to roll in 2012 after I released the Murrelet, a 17’ touring kayak and the first of Pygmy Boats’ new kayaks designed to be easy to roll. Her progress was astronomical. She learned to Static Brace and Butterfly Roll on her first day. On her seventh day I was suited up in my dry suit standing in 49o water helping her right herself when she missed a roll. To my surprise Freya threw away her paddle and executed her first hand roll! Unbelievable!

Freya loves the water. She started kayaking in my lap at eighteen months and was an excellent swimmer at three-and-a-half. As a toddler she was impervious to the cold, playing in the chilly coastal waters of Puget Sound and splashing around barefoot in puddles of winter rain. She always comes up smiling when she is rolling. She loves the waves, the water and the physicality of it all. I am happy when I’m out there with her.

Sisimiut, Greenland: Freya shows off the three piece kayak that flew to Greenland. To watch a video about John & Freya’s trip to Greenland, visit our website: www.pygmyboats.com/expeditons/greenland.html

When Dubside suggested she go to Greenland and show off her rolling skills at the place where it all began, I said to Freya, “If you want to do this, I’ll make you a kayak that is sized for you and designed specifically as a rolling kayak for you to compete with at the Greenland Rolling Competition.”

Prototype one was a big step up. Her already good Norsaq and layback hand rolls became rock solid, but a major re-design was required to enable her forward finishing hand rolls to become flawless. A final re-design made the boat, by far, the most maneuverable kayak Pygmy produces – Greenland rollers like a very maneuverable craft they can manipulate with ease.

Pygmy has added a “Rolling” category on our website. It includes the Murrelet, last year’s new Selkie, the Freya and the second new kayak introduced in this year’s catalog – the Ronan. The Ronan was designed while I was in Sapa, a gorgeous village in the hills of Northern Vietnam just south of the Chinese border.

We just put up a short video of Freya executing a perfect Straightjacket Roll, the most difficult roll (of the 35 competition rolls) that no one in Greenland pulled off this past year: www.pygmyboats.com/kayaking-videos.html

To read more about Greenland see Freya’s article on page 14.

Happy Paddling,

John Lockwood (Owner & Designer of Pygmy Boats)

Kayak building classes are now available across the country! Our classes in Port Townsend, WA were so popular we couldn’t seem to offer enough. When we had folks driving from the opposite end of the country in the middle of winter we realized it was time to partner with more boat shops nationwide. In the last couple of years we have expanded to Florida, Oregon, Maine and Ohio. The folks we have chosen to partner with share our commitment to quality and a passion for getting others on the water in crafts they have built with their own hands. These

Customer Quotes:“My time in the class was very enjoyable, I learned a lot, and on Sunday when I took my kayak home, I felt proud of myself for what I had accomplished.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Prior to coming, I was most excited about having a kayak - upon leaving the class, however, I was most excited about learning a new skill.”

week-long classes are a great, hands-on opportunity to learn how to assemble a kayak from trained professional boat builders. Over the six day course students complete major assembly of their kayak. On the 7th day, your kayak will be ready to be car-topped home, where the final construction steps and varnish application will be completed.

Freya

The New Freya represents a three-year collaborative design between John Lockwood (owner and designer of Pygmy Boats) and his daughter, Freya. The idea hatched at a paddling symposium when Dubside, a world-renowned kayak roller, suggested Freya take her rolling skills to the National Greenland Kayaking Competition. She and John accepted the challenge.

Page 7: Pygmy Boat's Newest Catalog

5

Four prototypes later they felt they had achieved the perfect rolling kayak. The full Greenland story can be read in her words on page 14 and John’s on page 1. In brief, both she and the boat performed beautifully in Greenland and had the highest rolling score of any male or female present at the 2015 competition.

Designed to Roll: The Freya is intended for advanced paddlers who want to further develop their rolling skills, or who desire a very maneuverable kayak. With her extremely cutaway back deck, laybacks are a cinch. The hull and decks were redesigned to make forward finishing hand rolls easier. The hull rocker was pushed further than any of our other designs to create a playful hull for dynamic water. This kayak is not intended for the beginner or the larger paddler. It was de-signed for a smaller-framed paddler with narrow hips and will accom-modate up to a size 9 men’s shoe (US), depending on ankle flexibility.

Freya Fennwood, Highest Scorer in the 2015 National Greenland Rolling Competition

“The Freya is by far the easiest rolling kayak I have ever been in. She fits like an extension of my body. I knew my Dad could design it if I could describe what I wanted. The end result is a kayak I know so well and am so confident in that I can concentrate on having fun in gnarly paddling situations like in the surf or tidal rapids.”

Rónán14’3” Length | 23” Beam | 11.5” Depth | 32 lb

The New Ronan is a direct inspiration from our recently released Selkie design. When we came out with the Selkie we knew her sweeping lines would draw admiring stares, and we predicted petite paddlers would love that they finally had a boat designed specifically for them. What we didn’t anticipate were the many paddlers who would stare enviously at this low-volume beauty before trying to cram their long legs and large feet into her snug fitting front deck. For these paddlers we’ve created the Ronan, a slightly larger version of the Selkie.

Page 9: Pygmy Boat's Newest Catalog

7

Playful and Lightweight: The Ronan is a more spacious version of the Selkie, which is a lightweight, hard-chined marriage of two of our most popular boats (the Arctic Tern 14 and the Murrelet). While 3” longer than the Arctic Tern 14, the underwater hull is identical, giving it the same efficiency in cruising due to low wetted surface area. Like the Selkie, the Ronan features a low sheer line with cutaway side deck panels that allow more body rotation and a more efficient use of a Greenland paddle. The major difference between it and the Selkie is its higher hull sheer height and larger cockpit, which allow larger paddlers the space needed for ease of entry and exit. The Ronan’s front cockpit height is 11.5” while the Selkie is 9.75”. The rear cockpit height on the Ronan comes in at 7.25” while the Selkie sits at 6.21”. Its dramatically low rear cockpit height makes layback rolls effortless. This kayak is designed for playful paddling in dynamic water. Experienced paddlers will love this low volume beauty in dynamic water, surf or as a lightweight day paddler.

True to Name: Selkies are mythological creatures in Irish and Scottish folklore said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. Ronan is an Irish language male given name meaning “little seal”, so it seemed an appropriate name for the Selkie’s big brother.

SELK

IE The Selkie 14’ Length • 22.5” Beam • 9.75” Depth • 29 lbThe Selkie takes two of our most popular boats (the Arctic Tern 14 and the Murrelet) and marries them into an elegant, light weight boat that petite women love. John Lockwood nailed his first static brace in its sea trials and found it extremely easy to roll with its dramatically low rear cockpit - it’s even lower than the Murrelet. Petite paddlers love the snug fit and lower volume deck for higher angle paddle strokes. Like the original Greenlandic sealskin kayaks the Selkie is hard-chined. At 14’ x 22.5” it’s a great boat for petite women or for larger paddlers who want a snug-fitting, low volume kayak to play in the surf (up to size 9.5 men’s shoe, depending on ankle flexibility).

Petite Women Rejoice: The Selkie has been specifically designed for petite women. It features a low sheer line with the Murrelet-style, cutaway side deck panels that allow more body rotation and a more efficient use of a Greenland paddle. A number of small women have already expressed their joy at finally having a low volume boat that fits! Many have had a hard time finding a boat that’s actually made for their smaller frames. Since her introduction she has been paddled by many women ranging from 4’9” to 5’4” who were absolutely thrilled that they finally

had a boat designed specifically for them and that is lightweight enough for them to car top. If you are a petite paddler looking for a kayak that can also carry some gear for touring, then the Arctic Tern 14 (at right) may be a better fit for your paddling needs.

True to Her Name: Selkies are mythological creatures in Irish and Scottish folklore that are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to be-come human on land. In the folklore of many cultures these shapeshifters are ever curious and charming creatures who enjoy playing in the surf and exploring the shore but must always to return to the sea. So, here’s to all you shapeshifters who must return to the sea! This design is a nod to you.

Reviews in Sea Kayaker Magazine“The Arctic Tern 14 is a godsend for smaller boaters. Its shallow cockpit design, nimble handling, and light weight are coupled with straight tracking and good speed. This boat is fun to paddle, and an excellent choice for smaller paddlers who can make their own boat.”

“So light to lift. Every time I hefted it, I was thrilled by how easy it was to shoulder carry...This boat puts a solo carry within the ability of paddlers for whom it was previously not possible.” – KC (5’7”, 140 lb female)

AT-14

Arctic Tern 14 14’ Length • 23” Beam • 11” Depth • 32 lb

In response to a request from Michael Powers, Tsunami Ranger and kayaker extraordinaire, John designed the Arctic Tern 14. Michael wanted a smaller, more maneuverable kayak that he could take into the rock gardens and

sea caves along the coast of Oregon. By 2002 the Arctic Tern 14 became our second best selling sea kayak as she became a popular boat to take into the surf

and rock gardens along the entire west coast. The boat’s hard chines and shorter length make her very responsive to leaned turns, an ideal characteristic for playing in the surf zone. Her recessed cockpit makes executing rolls and braces in rough water easier. Although the Arctic Tern 14 was designed with advanced paddlers in mind, the end result was much more. Teens and smaller adults relish the fact that there is a touring boat just their size. Her lower wetted surface gives her a cruising speed advantage over longer boats and makes keeping pace with larger, stronger paddlers in longer boats a pleasure, not a chore. The Arctic Tern 14 is ideal for paddlers 4’10” up to 6’ with shoe size up to men’s 10.5. At 32 pounds and 14 feet, she is extremely easy to car top. Smaller paddlers may choose this kayak over the Selkie (at left) if they plan to do more overnight trips. Even though they are the same length, the Arctic Tern 14 will carry significantly more gear.

SERI

ES THE MURRELET SERIESThe Murrelet is a 17 foot multi-chine hull made for those who like a high-performance kayak. At 22 inches wide she is thin and sleek, but retains very comfortable initial stability. She executes leaned turns beautifully and is very well behaved in wind and waves. Though this kayak is designed with the Greenland roll in mind, this is a great performance touring kayak for intermediate kayakers or novices looking to expand their skill set. Customize your Murrelet by choosing which hull version, cockpit size and deck configuration is right for you (see opposite page).

Sea Kayaker Magazine Reviews“Rolling is a real pleasure with this kayak” (MC). “A rolling machine, even hand rolls are not difficult.” “Excellent cruising speed, with excellent acceleration, and good sprint speed as well.” (GL)

“The Murrelet is a great kayak for Greenland-style rolling, and yet has some stowage advantages for long trips. I loved the light weight for car-top-ping and enjoyed paddling and show-ing off this wooden beauty. It’s stable enough for athletic beginners, and a playful, rough-water rolling machine for the experts.”

1. Choose Your Hull: The first and most critical decision for on the water performance is choosing your hull design. The two options allow you to choose what degree of maneuverability you prefer. Hull version one tracks strongly while hull version two is our most maneuverable touring kayak. If you are looking for a play-boat to use in currents, rock gardens or surf, or want a short boat feel in a 17- foot sea kayak, hull version two is for you. If you are looking for an exercise boat or a touring boat, you may want hull version one (it’s one of our strongest tracking kayaks). Both versions roll beautifully, track well and are sleek and fast. 2. Choose Your Cockpit Size: The 15.8”x 33” cockpit has a snugger fit, while the 17”x 33” is for those that appreciate a little more wiggle room. 3. Choose Your Deck: The Murrelet 4PD (Four panel rear deck) has the most storage space of our Murrelet line. Her extra panels on the rear deck and sweeping front deck offer a low rear cockpit for rolling without compromising the room necessary to tour, making this the best deck choice for people seeking the performance of a Greenland-inspired kayak with the option to tour. Height at Front of Cockpit: 12” | Knee Height: 10.1” | Rear Cockpit Height: 7.9”The Murrelet 2PD (Two panel rear deck) has the second lowest rear deck of our Murrelets, offering a compromise between storage capacity and lower rear deck height. The cockpit, like our 1PD and 4PD, sweeps up in the front to allow ample knee height and foot room. Height at Front of Cockpit: 12” | Knee Height: 10.1” | Rear Cockpit Height: 7.5”The Murrelet 1PD (one panel rear deck) has our lowest rear deck for Greenland style rolling. This boat has a traditional Greenland look and is the lowest volume boat of all the Murrelets. If you want to get as low as you can, this deck is for you. Height at Front of Cockpit: 12” | Knee Height: 10.1” | Rear Cockpit Height: 7.5”The Murrelet SDC cockpit is similar to our Coho and Arctic Tern cockpits and has a higher rear cockpit height than the other three Murrelet models. It’s a tighter fitting fore deck than the other three Murrelet designs, with a lower knee, thigh, and foot height intended for smaller paddlers’ (under 5’4”) tighter paddle strokes. She and the Murrelet 4PD will carry the most gear with their higher rear decks.

Height at Front of Cockpit: 11” | Knee Height: 8.9” | Rear Cockpit Height: 8.8”

THE PINGUINO SERIES Sea Kayaker Magazine Review

“The Pinguino hits the mark dead-on, a recreational-style kayak for the home builder. It is perfectly suited for photography or bird watching and its stable behavior made it confidence-inspiring, fun, and easy to paddle.” (TE, 6’1”, 200 lbs)

WoodenBoat Magazine Review“The Pinguino’s stability makes it an ideal platform for fishing, photography, and relaxed outings... It’s a well-mannered design with a respectable cruising speed and a good amount of cargo space for carrying several days’ worth of camping and cooking supplies. Its near-sister, the Pinguino 145-4PD, has a smaller cockpit that allows for rolling and advanced control.”

For four years now the Pinguinos have been our most popular kits. “Pinguino” is Spanish for penguin and, like the penguin, the Pinguino’s short and broad appearance belies her speed, grace and agility on the water. The Pinguinos are a great choice for paddlers who value stability.

PINGUINO SERIESPinguino 145: 14’6” Length • 25.5” Beam • 13” Depth • 36 lb • 19”x 36” Cockpit or 17”x 33” Cockpit The stability and large cockpit opening of the Pinguino 145 make her an excellent choice for fishing, photography, bird-watching, or a relaxing day on the water. Folks with stiffer knees enjoy the ease of entry. At 14.5’ her chief advantage is the fact she has less wetted surface and less frictional drag than longer boats, and paddles with less effort at speeds below four miles per hour. She’s more stable with more knee height and foot room than any of our other touring boats, except the Borealis XL. She tracks solidly, but thanks to her shorter length is quick to turn. Great for light touring as well.

Pinguino 145-4PD: 14’6” Length • 25.5” Beam • 11.5” Depth • 36 lb • 17”x 33” Cockpit With the same hull as the Pinguino 145, the Pinguino 145-4PD offers the same advantages at cruising speeds with less frictional drag than longer boats. She is equally as stable but her smaller, arched cockpit design allows a closer paddle stroke and a very low rear cockpit height to facilitate Greenland-style layback rolls. The front deck design cuts the side deck panels away to allow a closer, more comfortable and efficient paddle stroke. This version has been created for people who like a snugger fit or want to take the Pinguino 145 into the surf zone or rock gardens where they will brace or roll the boat. The lower deck also makes it more ergonomic for shorter paddlers who may have a tighter paddle stroke, or who don’t want the larger cockpit commonly found on recreational kayaks. Great for light touring but carries less than the standard Pinguino 145. Pinguino Sport: 13’ Length • 25.5” Beam • 13” Depth • 33 lb • 19”x 36” Cockpit or 17”x 33” CockpitThe Pinguino Sport is a great choice for paddlers who want light weight coupled with stability and aren’t in a hurry. Her shorter length and light weight make cartopping and carrying to the water a cinch. The Pinguino Sport’s size also makes her an excellent choice for stowing on the deck of a larger boat for day paddling from a “mothership”. Though the Pinguino Sport is a recreational kayak at heart, she has the soul of a sea kayak, so don’t be afraid to take her out in the surf. Due to her shorter waterline length she’s the most maneuverable of all the Pinguinos but as such has the least amount of storage and is also the slowest.

White stretches as far as I can see. I catch a glimpse of coast and realize all that white isn’t clouds; it’s the arctic ice sheet. Rivers of ice run from a pure white blanket into jumbled blue blocks, like dominoes tipping into the sea below me. What are all those little white dots? I’m fogging up the airplane window in my eagerness to see the world outside. It registers that the white dots are monster icebergs, probably the size of football stadiums. The ocean below me is carpeted with bobbing blocks of white. This entire country of Greenland is unmistakably white, not green. I get a little uneasy as the questions mount: What am I doing? Why did I come here? Am I really going to roll in that sea of liquid ice?

I look at the view again and reframe my thinking. I’m here to experience the kayaking culture of Greenland. I’m excited to see my Dad, who’s been on an around-the-world trek for over a year and half. I’m here to have fun and play in the kayak my dad designed specifically for me to roll in. “Bring on that ice water. It looks like a great adventure!”

This journey started over three years ago when I was sitting on the beach at an event called SSTIKS (South Sound Traditional Inuit Kayak Symposium), a Greenland kayaking gathering held on the Hood Canal in Washington State. My Dad had just come out with a new Greenland rolling and touring design, the Murrelet, and I was having a great time rolling it. Greenland kayak instructor Dubside came up to us and said, “Hey Freya, you’re getting pretty good at this rolling, you should go to Greenland and compete in the Greenland National Kayaking Championships.”

My father looked at me and said, “I’ll design you a kayak to roll and we can take it to Greenland.”

“Deal! I know just what I want,” I replied.

So we began to create a Greenland rolling machine: a kayak with lots of rocker for maneuvering quickly in tide races like Deception Pass or rock gardening along exposed coasts, one that would fit like an extension of my body, that was designed to roll effortlessly and that would give me confidence in any situation. Now, almost four years later, after four prototypes and countless sessions on the beach analyzing how the kayak rolled, I was on a flight to Greenland to participate in the Greenland National Kayaking Championships in my custom-made, take-apart kayak, which was flying in the belly of the airplane beneath me.

Many kayakers think of the Greenland National Kayaking Championships as the Olympics of kayaking, but it’s more like a Greenlandic kayak family picnic. Nothing is taken too seriously. Spectators cheer just as loudly for the last person to cross the finish line as they cheer for the first. If an event is supposed to start at 9am it will probably begin by 11:30am. I’d been warned that as an international this can get annoying and you just have to go with the flow. My goal in going to Greenland was not to win. Instead, the rolling was an excuse to see a new country and a new culture. Learning some 30 ways to roll a kayak was my ticket. What better adventure for my father and I than to go where kayaking began and to hang out at the family picnic.

On the day of the rolling competition I arrived at the suggested time of 9:00 am. Almost no one was around. Every event starts with the little kids then works up to the teenagers, women and men. As an international you don’t really know when they’re going to throw you

into the mix, so you just hang out all day, watching the other competitors. People began arriving and getting their gear ready for the day. I found it fascinating to watch as people pulled traditional sealskin tuiliks out of plastic bags and unrolled them in the frigid seawater. A sealskin tuilik is a highly prized possession and costs about US$3,000. They need to be carefully taken care of, and one great way to do that is to freeze them when they are not in use and then thaw them out slowly in seawater. I noticed there were about 3 tuiliks at the event and between each person’s turn to roll they were trading them from competitor to competitor. There didn’t seem to be much fuss about taking your time on the water. Some people would sit in their kayak for 15 minutes getting up the nerve to do one basic roll. Everyone on shore patiently waited for each competitor and when he or she succeeded or failed they cheered just as loudly, no matter the outcome. At first I wondered, “Why can’t they just do the rolls they know and get off the water,” but I realized there was something I really liked about the way things were conducted. Time didn’t matter. Every person got a fair chance to do their best, whatever that may be, and when they finished everyone cheered for their bravery.

I realized I really like this way of doing things much better than running everything by a Swiss clock. Culturally I am more accustomed to one’s worth being calculated by speed, strength and performance, but the Greenlandic way actually fits much better with my personality and my ideals. I enjoy being on the water not for competition but for the sheer pleasure it brings me. Watching the other participants I was reminded of this and became even more determined to just have fun on the water when it was my turn.

We waited patiently as 9am slid to noon. Noon slowly approached 3:00 and eventually 6:30. While sitting on a rock and listening to the Greenlandic language burble overhead, I suddenly heard the word “international.” The French woman beside me, Sandi, jumped up

as her name echoed over the loud speaker. I hadn’t heard my name yet. A great amount of confusion ensued as we tried to determine whether I was supposed to get ready to roll. Apparently they’d forgotten about me. In an ironically abrupt moment I was suddenly hurried on the water.

I quickly gathered my kayak, paddle and (neoprene) tuilik and headed down the dock. I tried to stay calm. “Relax. This is the fun part. This is what you came here to do and damn girl you’re going to have FUN!” As Sandi pulled off the water I lined my kayak up and hoped for the best. The fact that the atmosphere was so relaxed helped me relax. I just rolled. The sun was out and felt reassuringly warm. I was even sweating in my neoprene and dry suit. Luckily, with a mixture of excitement and nerves, the icy water didn’t feel too much cooler than the Puget Sound on a cold winter day.

I let my body and kayak work together and do what I had practiced a thousand times before. With each roll I was pleasantly surprised when I executed it correctly. I laughed when my vertical sculling roll clearly had no sculling in it, and just had fun on the water going down the list and trying every roll. I was very happy when I got my forward-finishing brick roll on both sides because it’s one of the hardest rolls. I tried my straitjacket, which I have completed successfully a few times, but doubted it would happen in the event. I think my failure entertained the crowd. The Greenlanders graciously cheered for me,

Page 22: Pygmy Boat's Newest Catalog

and my dad beamed on shore. As I got out of my kayak, I was smiling from ear to ear. I had not done the absolute best I could, but I certainly hadn’t done my worst and most of all I had fun on the water. As I got out of my kayak one of the little boys who had won a race the day before was there to help me out. He smiled, gave me a big fist bump and said, “You a very good roller.”

The next day on the bulletin board the rolling scores had been posted. Looking through the numbers I found mine: 259. Looking through the other numbers I was shocked to see that I had achieved the highest rolling score of any woman or man at the event! This was certainly a surprise to me. Later I learned I had gotten the second highest female score of all time, right below Freya Hoffmeister, who had a score of 275 when she came here and competed. I’m perfectly happy to have a score second to Freya Hoffmeister, who just became the first person to circumnavigate South America by kayak. There must be something about the name Freya and kayaking.

The week after the competition my dad and I flew to Ilulissat, which sits approximately 220 miles north of the Arctic Circle. We couldn’t believe our eyes as we drove into town. The bay was littered with icebergs. This would be a whole new kayaking adventure. Some competitors

It was sitting on the doorstep of the Ilulissat kayak club, which is on a beautiful little cove right in the front of town. Through our connections from the Kayaking Championships we met John Pedersen, a local man heavily involved in the Ilulissat kayak club. He was kind enough to give me a spare set of keys to the kayak club, let me store all my gear right by the water and even let my dad borrow a large plastic kayak to go out paddling.

We slipped our kayaks in the water at about 10:30pm. The light was still high in the sky as we paddled out to explore the iceberg paradise. The glacier ice crackled softly, like static over a radio, as ancient CO2 was freed from the melting ice. The shapes and pure massive size of the icebergs mesmerized us. As the sun got lower, never dipping past the horizon, the ice took on shades of gold and light blue. I was astounded not to see another soul out paddling at such a gorgeous hour.

Greenland had given us way more than I expected. I couldn’t believe I was paddling my kayak in the birth place of kayaking and I was there with my dad, the person who introduced me to kayaking 27 years ago when I was just a baby sleeping in his lap to the rocking of waves on the hull. Now we were here in Greenland paddling with icebergs. I had rolled in the Greenland National Kayaking Championship and learned how to laugh and cheer with the crowd just as loudly for those who came in last as for those who came in first.

Coho Hi

Coho

Reader’s Choice Awards, Sea Kayaker Magazine- Voted “Best Wooden Kayak” ”The Coho has been on the market for 14 years and hasn’t lost any of its appeal. When we reviewed the Coho in 1998, it drew high praise from a 5’2” woman and a 6’2” man alike. The 17’6” by 23” kit kayak weights only 39 pounds, making it easy for smaller paddlers to carry. For our reviewers the Coho was ‘beautifully responsive’ and ‘tracked quite well.’ One put it ‘on the top of my list for an expedition-style kayak,’ and another rated it ‘my hands-down favorite of all the boats I have reviewed. I would recommend it to anyone.’ Varnished wood and light weight always make a good first impression but only performance on the water could give the Coho its longevity.” -- “Voted Best Wooden Kayak”, Sea Kayaker Magazine, November 2011-2014

Coho Standard 17’6” Length • 23” Beam • 12” Depth • 40 lb

Voted “BEST WOODEN KAYAK”: Our top rated Coho has been making waves since her

introduction in 1997. Comfortable and versatile at 17’6” long with a 23” beam, the Coho has plenty of volume for paddling expeditions. At 40 lb, its light

weight also makes it a great choice for day paddles, or a quick paddle in the evening after work. The Coho features a multi-chine hull design for great paddling efficiency. The moderately-rockered keel makes the Coho responsive when turning without sacrificing tracking ability. Coho Hi 17’6 Length • 23” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 42 lb We have taken our highly rated Coho design and added an additional 1.5” keel to deck height to accommodate paddlers with larger shoe sizes and longer legs. The Coho Hi’s additional 1.5” of deck height is great for shoe sizes larger than a men’s 12 or for those looking for a higher volume touring kayak so they can take it all with them on paddling expeditions.

Reviews in Sea Kayaker Magazine “I really loved this kayak. The hull design is top-notch, it combines superb rough-water handling, good tracking and turning, and outstanding surfing ability for a touring kayak. A great choice for beginners interested in learning good technique and edge control.” – K W (6’1”, 200 lb male)“I really enjoyed my time with this boat, and I was loathe to give it back. It handles well and one could use it for day paddling, long trips, and even local racing.” (HE) “The Arctic Tern is a pretty boat with nice handling characteristics. It is a good general-purpose cruiser that would carry ample gear for camping.” (TE)

Arctic Tern 17 17’ Length • 23” Beam • 12” Depth • 39 lb

Voted “BEST KAYAK KIT” Winner of top honors in Sea Kayaker Magazine’s Readers Choice Awards, the Arctic Tern was voted in 2005—hands down—the best kit kayak on the market. Her classic Greenland lines, raked bow and

stern, and the sweeping curves of the multi-chine cambered deck combine to make her one of the most beautiful medium volume touring kayaks available. When you want to alter course quickly, lean over on her hard chines and cut fast, graceful

turns. The Arctic Tern handles rough seas beautifully and will be your best friend on big crossings. And who wants a boat good for touring only? At 39 pounds, the

Arctic Tern is a light delight on day trips or lunch hour workouts, too.Arctic Tern Hi 17’ Length • 23” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 42 Lb. A deeper version of the same award winning boat for people with big feet or more camping gear. If you have a shoe size larger than men’s 12 or want more knee and foot room, or if you like to take everything but the

kitchen sink, this is the boat for you.

Reviews on www.paddling.net Rated 9.7 of 10 (9 reviews) The Osprey double had a, “Very easy and straightforward construction process... holds a ton of gear, is very comfortable and paddles like a small lightweight boat with excellent tracking.” 04-25-2001, Chad

“I built the Osprey Triple so I could get myself and my 2 kids in the same boat. It is beautiful, rugged and versatile. It’s a pleasure to build. I have no previous boat building experience and very little woodworking experience. Phone support was excellent.” 12-29-2009, bbonnen

It is totally a gorgeous dream boat. It’s wonderful that it is so light -- super easy to put on the car compared to our old canoe. Mine came out right on 64lbs all up with seats and rudder. 10-18-2010, Ben

Osprey Double 20’ Length • 30” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 60 lbLike the Osprey Std. hull, the Double and Triple are multi-chined and efficient. Weighing only 60 pounds, the Osprey Double is a pleasure to paddle, and easy to load on and off a car. The Osprey Double has excellent primary and secondary stability. Even in big water, her 30” beam holds you steady. You can load this hull full of gear and large adults. Volume is the true weight limit. The Osprey Double is light, elegant and eminently seaworthy.

Osprey Triple 20’ Length • 30” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 62 lbJohn took our Osprey Double and fashioned a 3-cockpit version. Otherwise, the hulls are identical. She’s quick, easy to handle, and a versatile craft as well. A child or two, a large dog, or a mountain of camping gear can sit in the center cockpit while two adults paddle the boat from the fore and aft positions. The Osprey Triple can also function as a solo kayak—simply paddle the boat from the middle cockpit. This enables you to center your weight for a balanced paddle, with the hull in good trim. When looking for a boat in which the whole family will feel comfortable and secure, consider building an Osprey Double or Triple.

Reviews in Sea Kayaker MagazineOsprey Std.*, Dec. 1996, “has good stability. In terms of paddling feel she is one of the most comfortable boats I have ever paddled. I felt secure in it immediately” (VS).

“The boat is quick and responsive. It accelerated and held speed with little effort” (DA). When unloaded, [she] gave all of our reviewers a sense of easy, effortless paddling, perhaps because of its light weight. “The day of my test I paddled over ten miles and I felt like I had hardly done any work” (VS).

Osprey 13 13’ Length • 22” Beam • 10.5” Depth • 26 lbDesigned for petite adults, up to 5’3” 125 lb, along with teens and kids down to 50” tall, the Osprey

13’ is light and quick. Her low wetted surface means keeping pace with stronger paddlers is simple. She handles beautifully. Whether you are on a placid estuary or rough open water,

the Osprey 13 will hold a course, and her shorter water line aids in maneuvering in tight water. This is a great kayak for kids!

Osprey Std 15’8” Length • 24” Beam • 12” Depth • 38 lbThe Osprey Std continues to maintain a cult-like following thanks to her stable manners

and ease of paddling. As one of our strongest tracking hulls, she holds course beautifully in wind and waves. Her low wetted surface gives her a fast cruising

speed and her long water line (the same as the 17’ Arctic Tern) gives her a high top speed. Ample cargo capacity and good stability make her a fine choice for tour-

ing and day paddling. Beginner paddlers often comment on how quickly they feel confident paddling the Osprey Standard. More experienced paddlers marvel at her quick acceleration and efficiency.

Reviews in Sea Kayaker Magazine“The Borealis XL “ is really the big guy’s dream: a quality kit touring kayak that combines a grand size with great looks and good handling.”(TW) “Despite the wide beam it was quite easy to push along at 4 knots.”(MK). “Ample storage for long trips is a high point of the Borealis XL. Extra goodies and all the luxuries of home can fit in the grand compartments.”(TW).

“The extra-large cockpit is heaven on earth....The fore-deck is canted and doesn’t interfere with high-angle paddle strokes.”(MK).

“For a kayak large enough to accommodate larger paddlers, the Borealis is light enough for an easy solo carry”(MK).

Borealis XL 17’ Length • 25.5” Beam • 13” Depth • 43 lbThe Borealis XL design complements our line of multi-chine hull shapes combining the raked stern and sweeping sheer line of a Greenland style boat with the performance and beauty of our famous multi-chine kayaks.

Perfect for Big Paddlers: The Borealis XL is a high-volume solo touring kayak suited for paddlers weighing 230lb-350lb. At 17’, with a 25.5” beam, 13” deck height, and an extra large 19” x 36” cockpit, the Borealis provides the volume, stability, and ease of entry that bigger paddlers need.

Stable and Comfortable: Originally designed for heavier paddlers, we were surprised to discover what a pleasure the Borealis is for some paddlers with long legs and large feet (up to size 15 men’s shoe). Her wider beam makes it more spacious and increases stability for a more relaxed feeling on the water. The roomier cockpit and 13” deck height makes it easier for long legs to enter and exit and allows the knees to be bent more. Pygmy’s signature cambered decks cut away the sheer, enabling paddlers to maintain a high paddle angle and ergonomic stroke despite her extra width. For paddlers who want to take her in dynamic water she can be fitted with our keyhole knee braces for a locked in fit. The Borealis is also available with our smaller, standard 17” x 33” size cockpit.

TAIGA CANOETaiga

Taiga Wilderness Tripper 17’ Length • 35” Beam • 13” Depth • 60 lb We named our canoe, the Taiga (Tie·guh) after the great north woods, where some of the largest tracts of

wilderness remain. This area is sprinkled with lakes and rivers of all sizes. Retreating glaciers left behind some of the finest wilderness paddling in North America.

The Taiga Wilderness Tripper Follows Lines of Tradition: Designer John Lockwood studied countless traditional canoes during the development stages. With few exceptions, original

tripper canoes had symmetrical hulls with recurved ends and tumblehome sides. The Taiga is the first stitch and glue canoe kit that incorporates this traditional tripper canoe design. If you would like a classic canoe that will take you from your busy life to quiet solitude, build yourself a Taiga. She was designed for extended wilderness travel. She tracks nicely and displays good manners in a wide variety of conditions. Her light weight and balance will be appreciated on portage trails. Stealthy efficiency make the Taiga an excellent choice for bird watching, fishing and day paddling as well.

You will fall in love with the grace with which the Taiga plies the water. She has beautiful ash gunwales and thwarts with classy wicker seats. Her recurved bow and stern and tumblehome are characteristics that have been lost in mass-produced plastic and fiberglass boats due to the difficulty of pulling them off molds. This is not the case when you build the beautiful Taiga from precision pre-cut panels.

Review in Canoe & Kayak Mag.“The finished product draws admiring stares from passersby and it handles well on the water, too... Final stability is outstanding. In strong wind and waves, the hull felt reassuring and secure. The hull has significant rise at both ends, so it maneuvers well, although it will also hold a course... It glides nicely and turns well on calm water... We also loaded 420 pounds into it, which did not even begin to approach its safe loading limits... At 65 pounds, the boat is remarkably light for a wood canoe.”

WoodenBoat Magazine “The Wineglass Wherry transports effortlessly over-land on a two-wheel dolly. Balancing its 90lbs over the wheels, I was able to push the boat along blacktop, down the ramp, and into the water alone, without any strain... The boat was well mannered on all points of sail, tracking dead straight. This was especially impressive on a beam reach, when one might expect the boat to round up or weathercock. There was none of this behavior.“

WineGlass Wherry 14’ Length • 48” Beam • 16” Depth • 90 lbThe WineGlass Wherry has the wineglass transom and smooth double-ended waterline of a classic rowing boat. When designing her, John drew inspiration from beach

skiffs that were common along the New England coast during the late 1800’s. Used in commercial fisheries, folks launched them through the surf and rowed out to fishing grounds. Their planked skegs allowed them to be more easily built and avoided the added weight of a heavy keel. Our WineGlass Wherry is a synthesis of two such boats—the Penobscott Bay Salmon Wherry and the Sea Bright Skiff. Like her predecessors, she is rugged, stable, and can handle wind and chop with grace and speed. The Finished Boat Weighs Only 90 Pounds: A traditionally built craft of the same design, with planking and ribs, would weigh nearly 300 pounds. The lightweight wood with fiberglass encapsulation saves you 70% in weight, without sacrificing strength and durability! The WineGlass Wherry is amazingly easy to transport. She can be carried on the roof of your vehicle, on a small trailer, or rolled to the beach with strap-on wheels. Whether you want a yacht tender, a camping boat, a seaworthy exercise rowing craft, or a family adventure boat—the WineGlass Wherry can do the job, beautifully.

In 1985 he began using that cutting-edge technology to serve home builders of human powered boats. Pygmy Boats is now the oldest most esteemed manufacturer of precision pre-cut stitch and glue kayak kits in North America.

Our boat kits are award-winning, sophisticated designs. Their ultra-accuracy makes them quick and easy to construct, even for non-woodworkers. All of our boats are fully computer designed. John studies the traditional centuries-old design

concepts and modifies them for modern needs and materi-als, resulting in extremely complex hulls. Computer guided lasers cut our plank templates to .004 of an inch accuracy. The accuracy and design combined create a sophisticated, high performance boat that’s easy to build.

Simple Construction: Never before have boats of this complexity been built so simply and quickly. The build-ing process takes no special skills. Hundreds of women and men with no prior woodworking experience build Pygmy boats each year. No power tools are needed. They require no strongback or mold. No trimming of panels (call us before ever making any modifications to a kit!). Our shop crew does

all the woodworking. The kit arrives via FedEx to your door. Unpack the boxes, lay out the labeled panels, and glue them to their full lengths. Edge drill the wiring holes with a handy little template that makes this step a snap.

Then start sewing the panels together with small wire twists. You exert no force on the panels. They easily as-sume their proper shape as you stitch them together. Next, glue the seams, remove the wires the following day, and fiberglass the boat. We recommend mixing epoxy, pouring it in a paint tray and laying it on with a foam roller. This technique quickly saturates the fiberglass cloth, laminating it to your hull. Most people build their Pygmy in a garage or basement. Those without an outbuilding or basement can clear the living room furniture, spread out a tarp and con-struct a boat right in the house! Just make sure the finished

boat will slide through a door or window. In warm weather, you can erect a tarp to keep off moisture, and build out-doors. If you have any questions during the construction process we highly recommended calling us. Phone consul-tation is free with every kit and encouraged.

Go Paddling: Once your Pygmy is completed, go pad-dling! Take that trip that you have been dreaming of, but be prepared for the conversations at the gas station - everyone will want to hear about your hand-built boat!

Key For Table At Right: * The Transverse Metacenter, in inches, is a measure of a kayak’s ini-tial stability. A higher number is more stable. All single kayaks computed with the same weight person.

† Efficient cruising is a function of low frictional drag and low wetted surface. Lower WS means faster (less effort) cruising speeds, here expressed in sq. ft. For example, the shorter Arctic Tern 14 cruises with less effort than the longer AT-17 until the AT-14 reaches 4.91 mph.

‡ Top cruising speed (TCS) is determined by loaded waterline length (LWL). A longer LWL gives a faster TCS. At approximately 90% of its hull speed (when a kayak starts to produce a bow wake longer than its LWL) the effort required to continue accelerating radically increases. In general longer kayaks have higher top speeds and short kayaks have more efficient cruising speeds.

§Also available with a standard touring cockpit opening of 17” x 33”
