Solstice Celebration Spreads Good Cheer

Perfect weather conditions on December 21 provided an opportunity for approximately 50 neighbours and friends to gather at the Kaslo Trailblazers Bridge to visit over hot chocolate, enjoy a warm fi re and watch a lantern procession on the main trail from town. Th e bridge was especially magical this year with its festive lights and the soft glow of 24 tea light lanterns hanging from the roof supports. Holiday greetings and hugs of good will were exchanged as people gathered around the picnic tables to tell stories and be thankful for all that we enjoy in this place we call home. Th e Kaslo Trailblazers look forward to hosting this event for many years to come.

Th e West Kootenay Journal Day-planner

It’s been 3 years since the release of the 1st edition of the West Kootenay Journal day planner, now out-of-print (a col-lector’s item!), and it’s exciting to see the all new West Koote-nay Journal 2nd Edition day-planner hot off the press. Simi-lar to the fi rst planner, this second start-anytime edition is beautifully illustrated with watercolour, pen and ink sketches and paintings from the nature journals of Susan VanRooy.

Unique to this edition is a focus on ways to establish more food self-reliance in the West Kootenay region. For each month keen observations by people with expertise in wildcraft ing, gardening, cultural traditions, biology, economics, natural history and more, are shared to en-courage participation and investigation in nature, in the garden, in the kitchen, and in our communities, as we move through the seasons. Article contributors include: Vera Maloff , Rachel Castor, Abra Brynne, Aimee Watson, Rachel Ross, Eva Johansson, Dave Johnson, Robert Yetter, Patrick Steiner, and Paris Marshall Smith.

Area residents and visitors will fi nd ideas for regional food gathering, growing, preservation and preparation, as well as cultural and natural history related annual events. It may serve as a sort of ‘primer’ to newcomers interested in learning more about sustainability, and, hopefully, will stimulate an interactive sharing of ideas and local know-ledge — something many people of almost all ages will look forward to using and learning from, as well as contributing to, over the years. Look for it in stores locally. A book launch and short reading will take place at the Live Art Shop (Front Street) in Kaslo on Saturday, January 14, 6:30 pm.

New Exhibit At VISAC GalleryTh e VISAC Gallery in Trail is proud to present “My In-

ner Child” by quirky fi bre artist Kim O’Brien. Based in Nelson, Kim is becoming well known for her imaginative and fantastical felt wool creations and the VISAC Gallery is excited to host her fi rst solo exhibition in Trail.

“Over the past year, I have loved making objects that brought me in touch with my earliest childhood experi-ences. I work with felted wool for the joy of its texture and the endless possibilities the medium presents and I use vintage material because it connects me to the past and to all the bygone stories that lie in the various scraps of fabric or accessories. By weaving my experiences into the past lives of others, past and present come together, and I adore the new meanings that are created. Showing the audience the wonder and imagination that comes with “self-indulgent craft ing”, I hope to encourage others into creating beautiful and creative tributes to their own “in-ner child”.

Artist reception is Saturday, January 21 from 12 pm to 3 pm. Th e VISAC Gallery is located at 1501 Cedar Avenue in downtown Trail. For more information, call 250-364-0234.

Th e Usui System Of ReikiIn Japanese Reiki means “universal life energy.”In the 1800’s Mikao Usui, a Japanese healer, wanted to

fi nd an eff ective, natural way of healing that did not de-plete the body of the healer. He was studying at a Buddhist temple on Mount Kurama, in Japan when he discovered the means of channeling Reiki energy.

At fi rst he used Reiki on himself and family; then de-veloped a means of introducing the method to others. A Reiki practitioner receives a series of atunements to assist in the channeling of Universal Life Energy.

Th e Usui System of Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who are trained in the original traditions of Reiki and whose professional and personal lives are committed

not only to this healing art but the lifestyle which it en-genders.

Reiki is a non-invasive treatment where the client lies fully clothed on a massage table and the practitioner places his/her hands on or over certain areas of the body to open the fl ow of energy. Reiki goes wherever it’s needed and ad-dresses body, mind and spirit. It accelerates the body’s abil-ity to heal physical ailments and opens the mind and spirit to causes of disease and pain. It helps one take responsibil-ity for one’s life and experience the joy of balanced well-ness.

Reiki Principles: Just for today, do not worry. Just for to-day, do not anger. Earn your living honestly. Honour your parents, teachers and elders. Show gratitude, to every liv-ing thing.

Selkirk College Recycling Program Selkirk College’s Recycling Department is celebrating

20 years of making the college a greener place to work. Established in 1991, the Recycling Department is run by

the Kootenay Society for Community Living, a regional organization that provides support services for a range of people in communities throughout the Kootenays.

When the department was fi rst established at the Castlegar Campus it employed three people, and since there was no re-cycling depot nearby, all the recyclables had to be trucked to Nelson every week, notes program coordinator, Liz Sali who has worked in the recycling program for eight years now.

Th e department has grown signifi cantly since its hum-ble beginnings. It now employs 13 people and sift s through more than four times the volume of materials as

it did initially. “Now we recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and tin,” says Sali. “Very little goes to waste here. We take a lot of pride in that,” she added, pointing to the tiny trash can of waste amongst a sea of recyclables.

Sali and the staff also recycle batteries, participate in the on-side composting program, collect paper clips and stamps for the SPCA as well as do all the shredding for the college. An interesting fact Sali notes is that some of the paper shredded at Selkirk College is used in the making of caskets for Doukhobor funerals. Sali puts in ten hours a week at the department’s facility in the Lower Bonning-ton area of the Castlegar campus, where about six people work at any given time – most of whom have been with the department for many years.

HAIRLESS RATS

sponsored by

Hairless rats have taken over the Trail BCSPCA and they are some in-teresting creatures looking for their new homes! The group of six was surrendered because their previous owners had to move and could not take the rat family with them.In the beginning, the owners had Cruella and Dumbo, but as un-fi xed rats do, they multiplied, with Cruella giving birth to two girls (Shenade and Bootsy Collins) and two boys (Pinky and George). Since then, Dumbo has been neutered and the boys and girls are housed separately, to ensure there are no more babies!Hairless rats are very similar to their haired counterparts, with some dif-ferences.They are nocturnal animals, which means they are active mostly at night. They also consume more food and water than haired rats do, since their metabolisms run at a higher rate to keep their body tem-perature up.

They are better housed with hair-less partners, as they are gentler with each other, as their skin is more sensitive. Bedding that is soft is better for them as well, since they can scratch their skin more easily than a haired rat. They should be kept away from drafts and direct sunlight, to prevent any tempera-ture changes within their environ-ment.Rats are social animals and bond easily with the right people. They can learn simple tricks and can learn their names as well. They are also litter trainable. If you are looking for a new forever friend, that needs less space than a cat or dog requires, come to the Trail BCSPCA and meet the hair-less 6. I know once the right people come in and look past their very unique exterior, they will fi nd their forever homes quickly. For more information, you can con-tact the Trail BCSPCA at 250-368-5910 or [email protected]

Warning On “Hydro Power Savers”BC Hydro is warning its customers to be aware of a po-

tential scam this winter season where telemarketers claim to be calling from BC Hydro to sell energy-saving devices called “Hydro Power Savers.” In some instances, telemar-keters also incorrectly claim they are in possession of the customer’s power consumption information.

BC Hydro does not endorse “Hydro Power Savers” and has seen similar potential scams in other provinces, includ-ing Alberta. In addition, customers’ power consumption information is strictly confi dential and is not shared with third parties.

As part of the calls, the alleged telemarketers are report-edly claiming that the “Hydro Power Savers” can save cus-tomers money on their bills. Customers who have been contacted by telemarketers about “Hydro Power Savers” are encouraged not to enter into any agreement for purchase.

Th e Better Business Bureau has included “power saving scams” as one of the Top Ten Scams for 2012. Customers who would like to fi le a complaint can visit the website of the Better Business Bureau serving Mainland British Col-umbia (BBB) at www.mbc.bbb.org or call the BBB at 604-682-2711,in the interior call, 1-888-803-1222, and on Van-couver Island, call 250-386-6348.

Report misleading advertising to the Competition Bureau website: competitionbureau.gc.ca.

BC Hydro has a lot of good information about how to reduce energy use around homes and businesses. Visit BC Hydro’s Power Smart website at www.bchydro.com/pow-ersmart or call customer service at 604-BC HYDRO (224-9376), or 1-800-BC HYDRO (224-9376).

Pentaèdre In KasloKaslo Concert Society presents the Montreal-based

woodwind quintet, Pentaèdre, on Saturday, January 28, 7:30 pm at St. Andrew’s United Church in Kaslo.

Pentaèdre’s program title is Opera Colada, a veritable cocktail of favourite operatic melodies by Mozart, Rossini, and Briccialdi in the fi rst half and then a quick change to Latin American rhythms aft er intermission. In order to switch smoothly from the operatic world to the suavity of the Latin music universe, the ensemble’s bassoonist Ma-thieur Lussier has written a short prelude in which every instrument gets its own moment of glory. Th ese fi ve su-perb musicians believe that there is no shame in being en-tertaining and have assembled this program in that spirit.

Tickets available at Figments in Kaslo or at the door. School-age children admitted free when accompanied by an adult patron.

KCR UpdateTh e Board of Directors at Kootenay Co-Op Radio

would like to extend it’s deepest gratitude and congratula-tions to the entire cast and crew of “An Incomplete His-tory of Country Music” which was enjoyed by audiences on November 10 and November 11 at the historic Lang-ham Th eatre in Kaslo. Th e event raised $2000 which has gone towards the ongoing costs of operating community radio in our broadcast area.

Host of Liner Notes (5 pm Mondays) Jim Van Horn has played an instrumental role in organizing fundrais-ing events in Kaslo for the past 3 years and we can’t sing his praises enough! Of course it takes a team to make an event successful so we would like to thank everyone for their support. Keep an eye out for future events that Jim Van Horn produces, they are always a blast!

We must also thank the volunteers who support the Lang-ham Cultural Centre, a true gem of the Kootenay region!

You can tune into Kootenay Co-Op Radio at 96.5 fm around Kootenay Lake, 93.5 fm in Nelson area and 107.5 fm in the New Denver area.

If you are interested in being a DJ/Host of your own show, give our Manager Jay a call at 250-352-9600 or email: [email protected]. New proposals must be in by Friday, January 13 2012.

Cyndi Sand-Eveland To Launch A Tinfoil Sky

Homelessness is a topic in the news, and on our streets. Now, award-winning Nelson author Cyndi Sand-Eveland has taken it into the pages of her new novel for children, A Tinfoil Sky, published this month by Tundra Books. Sand-Eveland launches this, her second novel, Th ursday, Janu-ary 26, 7:30 pm at the Nelson Library.

At the heart of the story is 12-year-old Mel, for whom home is a constantly shift ing concept as she and her mother cope with past and present demons. When cus-tody is awarded to Mel’s bitter, angry grandmother, Mel hopes for sanctuary, but fi nds it instead in the library. A growing friendship with a boy she meets there, and se-crets shared by a kindly shopkeeper off er Mel a glimmer of hope as she tries to fi nd her place in the world.

“Th e story was inspired by a young girl I saw singing for change on a street corner, and numerous other young people I’ve known over the years,” says Sand-Eveland. “I wondered what the young girl’s story might be, and I’ve wondered what might have become of the other kids I’ve known who lived on the edge. And I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to write about this.”

Sand-Eveland has worked with elementary-aged chil-dren for the past eighteen years as a teaching assistant. She has also worked as a freelance storyteller, children’s library assistant, and sign language interpreter. Her ex-periences with homeless youth give her characters au-thenticity in this story of hope and acceptance.

Sand-Eveland’s fi rst novel, Dear Toni, was nominated for numerous awards across Canada and won the Silver Birch Express Award in Ontario. Th e book was chosen as one of the Best Books for Kids and Teens by the Can-adian Children’s Book Centre and selected by the Banks Street College of Education in NY, New York as one of the

Best Children’s Books of the Year. Donations for Nelson Cares Society will be accepted at

the Nelson Library launch. Otter Books will be on hand, and the author will be available to sign books.

Jane Lynch: A RemembranceShe used to bring me a round of shortbread every

Christmas, and I must say, with deference to my Scot-tish grandmother, it was the best I ever tasted. She was going to show me how to make it, but somehow that didn’t happen. We’d fi rst met in 1979 as home builders on Shutty Bench, each of us, as our ‘homework’ allowed, gradually developing a nodding acquaintance with the community. She became more of a presence in Kaslo while working at the Treehouse where, improbable as it seemed, she washed dishes for a time. I’d wanted to photograph her there for Butcher, Baker, mostly because of the ice cream pail helmet she wore, but she declined.

At that time, the Treehouse kitchen was also a venue for athletic endeavour. Prior to washing, used cutlery was soaked in a large container in the sink. What began as the simple placing of knives, forks, and spoons in the bucket evolved into a real test of skill and coordination. In its fi nal incarnation, these items were tossed from behind a line on the fl oor, through a basketball hoop mounted on the wall above the sink, and only then into the bucket below. Apparently, this activity was not lim-ited to staff members, as some diners were also invited to try their hand. I’ve only just learned of this foolish-ness, and am more than a little piqued that I was never invited to the line. While all this was going on, Jane was obliged to be working at the same sink, hence the helmet on which she’d lettered, “Dishwasher’s Defense League”. Had I made that photograph, it would only have cap-tured her sense of humour, the camera being helpless and unable even to hint at her formidable intellect.

Out of the blue, I got a phone call from her last Nov-ember announcing that she was coming over to show me how to make shortbread. When I asked what had spurred the call aft er all these years, she said, “Well, I’m going to die soon so we’d better get on with it.” When I hesitatingly asked for specifi cs, she said only that it was statistically probable. So, over she came, recipe in hand, and insisted I make the shortbread under her direction. Th e results were very satisfying, but in retrospect not quite as good as hers had been. Next week I’ll try again, solo this time, with great fondness and infi nite respect for Jane Lynch.

Fees For Criminal Record ChecksEff ective Monday, January 9, 2012 residents in those areas

serviced by RCMP detachments in Salmo, Nelson, Kaslo, New Denver, and Nakusp will begin paying a fee for the pro-cessing of criminal record checks. Th e fee for employment-related criminal record checks will be $50 while the fee for volunteer-related criminal record checks will be $20.

Th e revenue generated through the collection of these fees funds a position that is dedicated solely to processing criminal record checks. Our support resources have been stretched to the limit and this is one way of reducing the burden on our Detachment Support Staff to allow them to complete other necessary duties and support the police of-fi cers working in our communities. We began this process a number of years ago in the Greater Trail area, expanded it to the Boundary region in 2011, and are now expanding once again to the Central Kootenay region. Criminal record check applicants can now expect to receive their completed checks much quicker than has occurred in the past when waiting periods reached several weeks in some cases.

Selkirk College IEPT Graduates Achieving Goals

“I have never been one of those people who have strong ideas of what they want to be when they grow up,” says Marcie Allen. “But aft er far too many years of unfulfi lling work and drudgery of the big city, I decided that perhaps it wasn’t too late for a career and life change. Knowing only that I wanted to fi nd work that was in line with my core values, I researched programs that could help me achieve that.” Allen, who graduated from Selkirk College in 2009, decided on the Integrated Environmental Plan-ning and Technology (IEPT) program based on the range of courses off ered in diff erent environmental disciplines and the program’s practical, skills-based approach.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my two years in the IEPT pro-gram, and aft er fi nishing I knew that many exciting jobs were now more available to me – even if the rock solid ca-reer goal remained elusive,” Allen explains. “Since gradu-ating I have worked seasonally as a fi sheries technician on a number of mark-recapture programs for the stock assessment of Chinook and Coho salmon on rivers large and small within the Fraser River watershed. It still amaz-es me that I get paid to go out on the river everyday!” A unique aspect of the IEPT Diploma program at Selkirk College is the ability to transfer two years of credits to-ward an environmental science degree at many univer-sities and schools across Western Canada. Deon Louw, who graduated from the IEPT program in 2010 was one of the fi rst students accepted into the University of British Columbia’s TerreWeb research on terrestrial ecosystems and climate change eff ects, says the program’s location in Castlegar is a key to its success. “Th e strength of Sel-kirk College’s IEPT program begins with the diversity of Castlegar’s physical environment,” says Louw.

“Th is environment attracts a core of excellent instructors who transmit their passion for their respective disciplines to their students. In a fi eld as broad and quick to change as environmental science, the adaptive approach of this strong core of instructors ensures a leading program for developing qualifi ed environmental sector candidates for years to come. Heather McMahon, a 2009 IEPT graduate who now works as an environmental technologist, says the program really suited her hands-on learning style.

“Th e best part about the classes for me was that there was a lecture portion and then a following lab portion, which, as a hands on learner, I found to be very valuable,” McMahon notes. “At my fi rst job in the environmental fi eld I was insulted to be asked if I could navigate a GPS, read a map or use a piece of equipment. But had to hold myself in check aft er realizing that prior to the IEP pro-gram, I had not known how to use those tools. I had be-come so comfortable in using the equipment in labs that it had become second nature in only two years.”

IEPT 2001 graduate, Crystal Klym says the program not only launched her into a decade-long career in the environmental fi eld, but also helped prepare her for life as a whole. “Selkirk College’s IEP Program not only prepared me for a successful career in natural resource and environmental management but also inspired me for a life-long commitment to learning, trav-el and professional development,” says Klym.
