The Shur-Gain Sheep Flock Feeding ProgramBy Brian Tarr
Ruminant Nutritionist
The kilogram of lamb sold per ewe mated in the breeding flock has a considerable impact onprofitability. There are three important stages in the production cycle where nutrition and man-agement have a marked effect on productivity. These include pre-breeding / breeding, lategestation / transition and lactation.
Flushing and breeding
Get ewes into 3 – 3.5 body condition well before the breeding season. Ewe lambs must beat least 60% of their mature weight (typically 100 lbs) at the beginning of the breeding sea-son. Rams must be in excellent body condition but not over fat prior to the breeding season
Increase the plane of nutrition prior to, during and after the breeding season. Feed ½ to 1 lbof a grain ration / head /day starting 2 – 3 weeks prior to the start of the breeding season.Always reduce grain gradually over a number of weeks at the end of the breeding season.
There are several feeding options. Shur-Gain 14% Easy Ewe Breeder Ration or the 15% Eweration. Alternatively, the Shur-Gain 34% Ewe & Lamb Supplement 200 can be mixed with on-farm grains to make up a ewe ration.
Transition ewes
The last four to six weeks of gestation is a critical stage in the ewe’s production cycle. As ageneral rule, flocks with lambing rates of 130% to 175%, should be fed grain starting 3-4weeks prior to the start of lambing. Flocks with lambing rates of 180% to 225% must feed grain4-6 weeks prior to the onset of lambing. Feed 5 – 10% more energy during cold weather.
The Shur-Gain 34% Ewe & Lamb Supplement 200 can be mixed with whole grains to makea ration that meets the nutrient requirements of close up ewes. The Shur-Gain 15% Ewe Rationis a complete option for this period. Always ensure that forage is fed to appetite, that eweshave free choice access to Shur-Gain Premium Sheep Mineral (intakes 15 - 25 g/h/d).
Lactating ewes
Correct feeding of transition and lactating ewes is vital to the survival and rapid growth of lambs. This ensures that ewes give birth to vigorous lambs, improving lamb survival, maximize milk produc-tion, lambs grow rapidly and keep morbidity and mortality to a minimum.
The Shur-Gain 34% Ewe & Lamb Supplement 200 (0%ECP) based grain ration is ideal. Ewes sucklingtwins or triplets can lose body condition very rapidly so feeding levels and good feeding managementare important to help these ewes maintain weight (or minimize body weight loss) and milk well.
Page 23
Page 24
Shur-Gain Lamb Feeding Program
Creep feed the Shur-Gain 18% Lamb Creep Ration to lambs from birth through to weaning, particularly groups where there are twins and triplets or in accelerated lambing programs withearly weaning. Alternatively, creep feed the Shur-Gain 16% Lamb Starter Ration (Pellet orTextured) to lambs from birth through weaning and starting lambs on feed. Creep feeding helpsthe smooth transition to feedlot grain diets.
Shur-Gain lamb feedlot rations can be fed following the creep ration. Mix increasing amountsof the feedlot starter ration in with the creep to ease the transition to the new ration. Oncelambs are adapted to the feedlot whole grain ration; continue to feed both the appropriatefeedlot ration and hay free choice but separately.
Feeding lambs
Feeding lambs for optimum gain, feed efficiency and profitability can be a challenge. Feedlot lambsare susceptible to several economically important diseases. The most important are acidosis, coc-cidiosis, urinary calculi and enterotoxemia (pulpy kidney). The effects typically accumulate graduallyover time. The symptoms may only become apparent once the condition is well established.Prevention is the key to managing the risk of any of these diseases occurring in feedlot lambs.
Excellent feeding and bunk management helps keep lambs on feed and promotes improved growthand feed efficiency. Lambs are fastidious and selective feeders and it is important to watch that allthe feed is being consumed fairly consistently between feedings. Make sure that all animals haveunlimited access to clean fresh water. We recommend feeding hay separately.
Shur-Gain products formulated specificallyfor feedlot finishing lambs.
SHUR GAIN 36% Sheep Supplement (200) (3.3% ECP)
SHUR GAIN 25% Lamb Supplement (200) (3.3% ECP)
SHUR GAIN 18% Lamb Creep Pellet (0% ECP)
SHUR GAIN 16% Lamb Starter Ration (0.66% ECP)
SHUR GAIN 13%Lamb Finisher Ration (0.66% ECP)
SHUR GAIN Premium Sheep Mineral
Shur-Gain products are specifically designed and formulatedfor sheep and contain high levels of bypass protein to pro-mote protein deposition in rapidly growing lambs. The rationsare high energy, promoting rapid growth. All Shur-Gainsheep feeds are supplemented with optimum levels of miner-als, trace minerals and vitamins to help promote growth andhealth. These products do not contain any animal proteinbyproducts. Shur Gain products offer great versatility and canbe adapted to fit different on-farm feeding situations.
