The most fi ercely anticipated social event and concert of the year had St. Maarten’s society tingling with chills with the ultimate sultry smooth performance of eight-time Grammy Award winner John Legend blended as fi ne as the Hennessy blends with legendary Percy Sledge.

Saturday night Aug 3rd, energy was felt in the air in Philipsburg’s festival village; the crowd built and danced to the opening local funk and soul ensemble band ‘One White Chick,’ while introduced to the true Art Of Blending with specialty mixed Hennessy Cocktails: apple, gin-ger, citrus, tamarindo, berry and soda. Elaborate tables of fi ne hors d’oeuvres lined the VIP section and passed amongst the attendees.

Two huge Viewsonic screens sandwiched the Telem stage where Percy Sledge opened up the night with his famous “When A Man Loves A Woman” and “Dreams To Remember,” warm-ing up the audience for the much wanted John Legend, who thrilled the crowd and swooned the ladies with his old-school, ultra-smooth classic jazzy sounds, beautiful light eyes and a voice that defi nes true romance.

“Please, just play Ordinary People;” the wish was granted upon encore but not a beat was missed when he was seated at his piano or standing with mic in hand, smoothly spilling out hits like “Tonight,” “Slow Dance,” “PDA,” “All of Me” and many more. When the entire place wasn’t in full screams of joy they were totally silent, eagerly await-ing every next note and tone.

Socialites like Theo Heyliger, Wendy Wathey, Andy Wescott Williams, singer Michulaika, DJ Johnny Kelvin, and Samantha Georges-Jacobs were in attendance.

“The Best Wines Are The Ones We Drink With Friends,” declares BOOZE IT UP! and RHYTHM N’ BOOZE. The enormous new wine and liquor ‘empire’ and booze lounge offi cially opened its doors with a celebratory grand opening party in Simpson Bay, Tuesday evening November 18th.

Lavish, elegant and glamorous, the best wines were served to smiling guests and glowing faces at the impressive palatial alcohol mecca, a mega retail and wholesale arena not yet seen on St. Maarten. Greeted at the door by gracious hostesses, wines and champagnes were elegantly displayed past the guest photo opportunity at the entrance.

Passionate wine experts Jean Luc Garreau and Jenny Rosetti hosted an international panel of guests, serving fi nger foods along with 2009 gold medal winner Haut D’As Bordeaux, their 2011 Cote De Provance Domaine de la Pregentiere, a precise 2008 Bourgogne Renomnee Blanc and a well defi ned and delicious ‘Drappier’ Champagne.

“We as both wine lovers and drinkers wanted to create a modern and trendy venue with ambiance where you can hangout, sample, purchase, learn, love and enjoy a wide range of wine; It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to open up in Simpson Bay”.‘Booze It Up!’ and Rhythm N’ Booze offer more than guidance on wine. Services include retail and wholesale, delivery, yacht provisioning, kosher wines, private parties, tastings and special orders. Grand Marche’s Anil Sabnani stated, “When you enter there is a real ‘wow’ factor! There isn’t a true wine and liquor store with such well represented brands anywhere on island, it’s extremely impressive!”

Palapa Marina Director Valeska Luckert said, “Truly an eclectic selection of wine, spirits and specialty items in a very professional and well executed atmosphere. It’s certainly a superb addition to the neighborhood, fantastic for catering to yacht and event provisioning.”

rt Saves Lives celebrated their inaugural Summer program with a weeklong workshop

(June 24-29) that brought top Artistic industry educators from around the world with a variety of talents to share their expertise with regional talented students.

The program featured 17 artists teaching in their genres of dance, spoken word, drumming or jewelry design. Each day began with physical training (Yoga or Pilates) and continued with transformational Art of Alignment. At the end of the week students held an awe-inspiring public performance at the local Culture center demonstrating the skills and lessons they learned.

“The kids were pushed hard from 8am until 7:30pm for six days straight and given one dry run to practice their pieces.

The performances were flawless; you can tell they came from the heart because the kids were exhausted!” stated Allison Deher, Pilates instructor.

ASL is working toward sending eight determined students on a cultural exchange to New York City to continue their individual artistic education and development; these students were chosen from criteria of submitted essays, stand out dedication and hard work during the week’s activities.

The vision of founder and President Nicole de Weever, the Art Saves Lives program “aspires to inspire” youth through educa-tion and cultural exchange, fostering the budding artistic talent of young St. Maarten and advocating arts in the community.

"Art Saves Lives Foundation is my most meaningful endeavor. I’ve been able to

return home and volunteer in numerous schools, exposing young minds to the possibilities beyond my own expertise--possibilities that are endless.

“We encouraged youth in need as well as aspiring young artists to be innovative, creative leaders, as we created a safe place for our students to explore, grow and be challenged. Watching students transform and seeing the impact the organization has had so quickly is truly exciting and speaks volumes.

“With so much love for restoring and preserving the value of culture and the arts through the empowerment of the youth, the future of the Art Saves Lives Foundation looks to be only longevity and success.”

native of Philadelphia, Anthony Burrell began teaching and choreographing at age 14, earning him an Emerging Choreographer Award and resulting in an

appointment as resident choreographer. He was schooled at the Pennsylvania Ballet and the National School of Ballet in Lima, Peru.

Anthony taught master classes at universities and dance institu-tions across the United States. After achieving his life-long dream of dancing with Alvin Ailey, he went on to commercial success in Los Angeles as a Dancer/Choreographer in the music industry, appearing in countless music videos and television programs, including Good Morning America and Oprah. He became a dancer, choreographer and dance captain for the industry's top artists such as Beyonce, Destiny's Child, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Kelly Rowland and Brandy, as well as touring with Mary J. Blige's Heart of the City and Music Saved My Life tours.

Anthony instructed in Hip-Hop for Art Saves Lives and designed the class to make a connection between concert and commercial dance. “As a working dancer in Los Angeles and worldwide, I have seen that the world of Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop and African are blended and meld in the commercial dance world.” Anthony’s program focused on the ability to pick up choreography, dynamic execution, performance quality, musicality and CONFIDENCE.

Noted by judges as "exquisite", and "the best dancer in New York on So You Think You Can Dance," he recently co-starred as "Dallas" on GLEE, and can also be seen on "Dance Moms" and “The Abby Lee Ultimate Dance competition.”

An

Life

WHEN SOMEONE OPENS THE DOOR to their prodigious and breathtaking home, it makes you feel special. Visiting the formida-ble Hope Estate Lapierre compound is like

stepping into a world-class art installation. No matter your expectations, there is no disappointment.

First, you have to realize this is not a museum or a store. Al-though it looks more like an artist’s home, it’s a unique busi-ness and design fi rm producing world-class luxury and es-thetically distinguished home furnishings. Its sleek, futuristic décor and aura fi ll the senses. It’s the work of a maestro, the French designer Patrick Lapierre, namesake and proprietor, who lives above the compound in a phenomenal villa.

How did he acquire his soaring talents? Simple: he ignored the traditional way of life. Growing up in the Drome re-gion of southeastern France, his youth was spent exploring woods, hiking mountains, playing on the riverbanks. The freedom he experienced fostered curiosity and inventive-ness. Although his architect father must have had other plans for him, his independence led him to leave school at sixteen and apprentice as a tile and mosaic setter.

It took just a few years to pick up the skills an artist would need when working on fi nishes, learning to mold and fashion metals and materials from nature. By the time he was twenty-three, he was the owner of a modest but thriv-ing business and his reputation had grown in proportion.

During a brief vacation, he fell in love with SXM and would soon after leave his native land and move here with young wife Andree Lise’. Experimenting with ma-terials from around the world and putting to use new technologies, he’s created his extraordinary environ-ments empire, fi nding inspiration from the island’s nature and beauty for his creations with marble, stone, slate, metal, wood, leather and, of course, mosaic.

I interviewed this master. I shadowed him from room to room in his extraordinary secret villa above. Like peeling an onion, I discovered one hidden treasure after another, like a gas range hidden inside a granite counter, an LED fl ower chandelier, a carved stone bed overlooking a pictur-esque Japanese water garden. The workings of the kitchen are so minimalist you might not know it was the kitchen.

The online description of Lapierre Marble speaks of marble and granite decorations. It doesn’t even come close. One of the most architecturally forward buildings on the is-land, the Lapierre HQ refl ects the company’s fearless drama, style and elegance while concealing an ingenious loft home above. How privileged I felt to tour this style and taste wonderland. “I love the Italian style of design, minimalist and chic. With Italian style I like to mix it with my FRENCH TOUCH!”

This innovative complex houses a factory with some of the most cutting-edge carving and polishing equipment of his trade, as well. We initially explore the downstairs

showrooms through a marble dome reminiscent of an entrance to a fi ne art museum before entering the small glass tube elevator (made for two) ,exposing his secret upstairs masterpieces.

From conception, design, and crea-tion to installation of both interiors and exteriors, the visionary Lapierre fi rm utilizes the most refi ned products to create mod and stylish kitchens, bathrooms, pools, furniture, fi ttings, accessories, appliances, and wine cel-lars. You name it, he makes it. “I love using noble and prestigious materials; I’m inspired by the magnifi cence and grandeur of what’s around me when I cut stone or design a new piece; I take the colors and forms in nature and work them into my projects.

“Clients from NYC, Paris and more can’t imagine such a unique business exists in St. Maarten/St. Martin. I ap-preciate helping people design their dreams but I love when clients give me carte blanche. It shows they trust my style. I choose simple, pure designs which withstand storms and weather.” With thirty years on the island, he’s ob-viously seen what a hurricane can do.

Stunned and silenced by form fol-lowing function, I notice that Pat-rick Lapierre, one of the most re-spected people in SXM art, carries himself with the same sophistication as his creations, slowly walking me

through the refi nement and fi rst class grandeur of his magnifi cent art gallery located opposite the show-rooms and displays of trade craft.

Patrick fi nds custom designers of dis-tinction to supplement his archives and showcases but is unwilling to release names, keeping industrial secrets close like a harnessed side-arm; however, currently featured in the Lapierre art exhibition gallery are local SXM artists, stunning pho-tographers, painters and sculptors. Currently he’s featuring the works of Coccinella, Benoit David, Mickael Doudeau, Douglas Hazelton, Laetitia Mah Nyamu, Frederic Massai, Patrick Nollet, Cheddie Richardson, Marc Templeton, Daouda Traore, Tumay, Jean Vallette, Pauline Wateau, his own Lapierre original sculpture plus compelling art by painter and writer Matias Durand Reynaldo.

His life-long, hands-on relationship with earth, stone, marble, wood and nature combine with his precision, at-tention to detail, artistic edge and cre-ative fi nishing touches to create real and functional works of art. See for yourself. His creations are irresistible.

ombining artistry and expertise, the DYNAMIC DUO of MAC Makeup store manager Miranda Matthew and Senses store manager Rosa Dambruck bring talent, splendor and a team

celebration!

Collaborating the boardwalk’s miniature department store cosmetics counter into “organized chaos”, these two women in beauty coexist side by side, as do their respective luxury brands: the exhilaration of MAC Makeup and the opulent romance and enchantment of ESTEE LAUDER, (ESTEE LAUDER, CLINIQUE, BOB-BI BROWN, and designer fragrances: DKNY, TOMMY HILFIGER, COACH and MICHAEL KORS perfumes)

Notwithstanding two differently run corporate struc-tures, the two-year-old retail beauty chandlery merges symbiotically. “We join together to make daily ops run smoothly. Whether it’s an in-store event, workshop, cocktail party or extravagant theme day, we pride our-selves on sophistication, professionalism, repeat busi-ness and experience- based customer service.”

But what exactly does it take to combine ideas, forces (and often personalities!) to market some of the world’s most exclusive and captivating lines to the islands? “In this offi ce there is a lot of brainstorming, multifaceted

ideas about new concepts, always pushing the edge. Al-though the entire staff is family, the MAC crew is trained specifi cally for MAC and the ESTEE LAUDER crew for its brands, respectively. Each brand has its own ‘person-ality’; we were challenged to fi nd a way to deal with that.”

From themes, evening events, fully trained MAC PRO artists and product education — by trained and certi-fi ed estheticians and cosmetologists — this glorious re-tail mecca offers not just products but service. A BEAU-TY SERVICE. “We have all your favorite brands in one place!”

Plus, they get to play with all the ‘toys’; how else would they know how awesome they are?

SO WHO IS ESTEE LAUDER’S ROSA DAMBRUCK? Rosa loves beauty in every ‘sense’ of the word. DR born, she has almost a quarter of a century on St. Maarten. Dy-namic, undefi nable and eclectic, Rosa’s personality and style refl ect an eye for detail and elegance.

“I love the good life, glamour, trends and fashion! I con-sider myself a beauty consultant.” With a degree in spa management, a certifi ed esthetician and makeup artist, she’s been immersed in the beauty world for over 15 years, including having her own beauty column in the local Spanish newspaper. “I appreciate moving to the next level and love trying new things within the beauty industry.”

A multifaceted jack-of-all-trades, Rosa’s primary passion is freelance design and decor for events and party plan-ners such as ‘Glitter.’ She’s a creative scenic and design artist, poetry and song writer, all allowing her to experi-ment with numerous artistic expressions by melding a variety of ideas together, portraying messages that in-spire and impact. But with no time for herself besides her 5AM Indigo Bay runs or Yoga sessions, she is looking forward to riding her next big inspirational wind and personal adventure.

Rosa’s beauty tips? “Hydration is the base and founda-tion for healthy skin in our hot weather and strong sun rays! Try ESTEE LAUDER’S Advanced Night Repair Se-rum, which penetrates deep into facial skin layers, the CLINIQUE Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief for deep hydration or my favorite, the BOBBI BROWN BB Creme for light coverage and a healthy complexion.” Rosa believes beauty is generated from the inside out and perfected from the outside in, by nurturing our skin with the right high quality products.

What’s trending? Rosa says it’s all about multitasking cream. “CC creams (color correcting) and products are meant to address issues like redness or sallowness. Dull,

ashy skin appears brighter, transforms into a peachy glow, and redness is neutralized. They’re designed to offer more coverage than BB creams but still go on sheer, mois-turize better and contain hard-core anti-aging products.”

Her favorite dining and shopping? Who doesn’t love Bam-boo Bernies in Maho or sipping vino at Rhythm N Booze? She loves the mall or even a day at Macy’s. What’s in Rosa’s purse? Rosa loves her Samsung Galaxy, Bulgari sunglasses, MICHAEL KORS Sexy Amber perfume, BB Creme, lip balm and Smokey Eye mascara from BOBBI BROWN, of course!

AND… WHO IS MAC’s MIRANDA MATTHEW? Locally born and raised, Miranda left for Holland at age 17. With a Bachelor’s in International Business Manage-ment and another in Real Estate Development, as well as a certifi cation in fashion makeup, she returned home nine years later with a plan!

“I came home because I was done with the cold and with every intention to pursue my real estate career. Seren-dipitously, someone recommended me for a position at the new MAC store.” She had already applied for a MAC artist position and a was MAC addict from day one, as well. “There was no other choice for me.”

How many people can say they love going to work every-day? This position has been a life changing and affi rm-ing experience so far. It has taken me to places like Las Vegas, LA and even Panama. It’s a sensational job, which has taken me to some of the most phenomenal places! I really feel like I ‘live the brand.’”

Up at 5AM daily, if she’s not working out with her personal trainer she’s maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating right. Her beauty tips? “With makeup, less is more. Use a light con-

cealer with a light powder to refresh whenever necessary.” Agreeing with Rosa, Miranda says, “Serums are great mois-turizers and correctors for our distinctive tropical weather.”

What’s trending? It’s all about great skincare. The MAC Marine line evens out skin tones and includes a fantastic cleanser, a softening lotion, a superb syrup and a perfect moisturizer for our weather. Her favorite product? “The MAC Fix Plus. Put it in the fridge and use it as a cooling agent as well as for setting makeup and hydrating skin!”

Miranda wears several hats. If it’s not her ‘sports hat’ or her ‘church hat’, she focuses on ventures like the Carbon Acquisition Group, for real estate project plan-ning and development and her ‘MM Entertainment,’ centering on promotion for events like her enormous upcoming New Year’s Eve event at Port de Plaisance (sxmnyeparty.com in collaboration with ilovesxm.com.)

Everything Miranda plans is BIG. Big parties, big events, big shows and big concerts, and she throws tons of ef-fort into her event and artist promotions and manage-ment dreams. She shops ‘big’ too. If it’s not Macys.com or asos.com, it’s Sharon’s Boutique in Philipsburg. For nightlife and dining it’s Maho’s Bamboo & Sky Beach and lounging at Palm Beach in Orient.

What’s in her purse? (A mandatory MICHAEL KORS purse, of course.) She’s a ‘phone freak’ with two phones, KORS sunglasses, MAC concealer, MAC full-coverage foundation brush and of course, her MAC Skin Refi ne Zone’ which she and everyone else these days seem un-able to live without.

“This is a SMALL ISLAND,” everyone always tells me. So what if you wanted to keep a secret like your illicit, forbidden, perhaps taboo love affair that no one can EVER KNOW ABOUT? ByBy Ariel Jamil Ariel Jamil

TRYSTS & RENDEZVOUSSECRET

Here is a ‘quickie’ guide to the best romantic, surreptitious and clandestine local spots to tickle every dangerous, savage, wild and untamed muscle in your body... SXM’s most secret spots (not anymore!) where Mr. Big and I can smooch in a dark corner, never to be seen BUT ALWAYS ON THE SCENE??

THE PAGODA ON PINEL ISLANDQuickly part ways from the rest of the pack directly off the ferry from French Cul de Sac. We scramble to the other side of our little private paradise on Earth just to be alone. So far away from the rest of the world: it’s our pagoda, our gazebo, our secret hideaway. Bring a bottle--bring two--but keep in mind the last ferry leaves at 4!

‘BETHEL’ CHURCH BAR ON TOP OF COLE BAY HILLThe best (and coldest!) beer we’ve had at a most praiseworthy island-wide view. We take our drinks and walk to the edge; during a lucky person-free moment we hold each other close -- but also to defend against the high winds in fear one of us might be blown away.

RESTAURANT SOL E LUNAOn a full moon at the base of Mont Vernon twinkles a private jewel, where the meal is perfectly succulent and French Bordeaux wine turns dining experiences into swirling romances. We play footsie under the table throughout the meal and somehow seem to rush through dessert... THE BEACH BAR AT THE RADISSON BLUYou can live here your entire life and not visit Anse Marcel’s Radisson beach front. It’s so far! we thought -- but worth the trip. As I sip my rose he takes my picture propped inside the swinging egg chair while we watch the sunset. Life seems very difficult right now. He loves the house specialty Planters Punch. I’m digging the view. Both of them.

THE GATEWAY MARINA BAR (AKA THE CRAZY COW)Secret breathtaking views of the lagoon, and hidden behind the big white fence across from Princess Juliana, we meet up at sunset. The breeze blows in. I’m already there having a draft on the other side of the bar. He walks in. Our eyes meet and lock. He smiles. I blush. We find a table in the corner; the barmaid lights the candles. We talk for hours, like the night we first met.

TOP OF PIC PARADISWe spend the day hiking, giggling, climbing. Step by step we dodge monkey poo and discarded mangoes while he grabs my hand and helps me up the tough spots. Gratefully hidden by the cover of the bush from the sun, we make our way up to the top. The view is as incredible as the company. I’m in love... with him, the island--both?

LAYLA’S BEACH BAR (NETTLÉ BAY, SANDY GROUND)A small dirt road between Marigot and Terre Basses hides secret gem Layla’s of legendary status, known for its French Creole and seafood cuisine eaten right on the beach or cuddled up under a comfortable canopy. One might want to be careful “sex on the beach” stays a cocktail tonight. So French. So dangerous.

So did you think I’d forget about Lover’s Cove Beach, the caves at Cupacoy Beach, Big Fish, the top of Ft. Louis in Marigot, a sunset beer at Turtle Pier or La Samanna? How about the highest private cabana at Loterie Farm, with our own Jacuzzi? There’re hundreds of spots where you don’t ever want to leave him/her or this moment. Time stands still. Find them. Share them. Or... keep them TO AND FOR YOURSELF.

If you feel you know La Samanna, it may be time for a re-introduction. As Operations Manager Emmanuelle Cipriani explains, the prominent luxury hotel has under-

gone a thorough and thoughtful transformation in the past year, taking it to the stratosphere of comfortable extravagance.

Upon entering, the striking renovations are impossible to ignore, establishing an immediate openness to its opulence, subtle and yet refined in its richness of detail: a more mini-mal and modernized bar area, additional seating to view the unsurpassed seaside vista; a lighter, modern “facelift” for the polished, posh décor. The facelift translates to spectacular guest accommodations, as well. More than half of the suites received a full redesign, creating an airier, brighter, softer sense, while still maintaining a keen touch of lavishness and, as always, eternal attention to guests’ comfort and satisfaction.

Perhaps the most exquisite upgrade is the addition of Execu-tive Chef Gil Dumoulin. Dumoulin came to La Samanna via an impressive route, spending his boyhood near Bordeaux, hon-ing his skills in Algeria, Indonesia, Cairo, Morocco—where he was appointed by the King—and, of course, Paris, where he worked with some of the best chefs in the world at the Hotel Crillon and Hotel Bristol. It’s this exotic culinary tapestry that led him to conceive a menu for La Samanna that’s nothing short of gastronomic perfection. Surprisingly simple and un-derstated, it is his quest for an “old style brasserie” and a com-mitment to quality that makes his restaurant without a doubt the finest dining on the island.

Hardly a mere supporting player, Head Sommelier Christian Mirande works alongside Dumoulin to meticulously select each wine according the customer’s taste. His cellar is more of a museum, carefully curated from findings throughout the globe. Unlike sommeliers in bigger, bustling cities, Mirande is attentively on-hand. He is delightfully ready to discuss what is best for your meal and your palate, and his expertise promises, without fail, a perfect pairing.

From Dumoulin’s appetizers, it’s clear to see how his extensive training comes together to create something seamlessly scrump-tious. Whether it’s tuna carpaccio with a light tangy dressing or beef carpaccio with a hint of black truffle, Dumoulin isn’t afraid to use a light hand, allowing some of the finest fish and meats (which he gets from New York) to speak for their themselves. From the Bourgogne escargots to the phenomenal foie gras, each appetizer is an applause-worthy stand-out.

Main courses include an array of fish--red snapper, Chilean sea bass, seared scallops over a bed of risotto--or a savory Caribbean seafood gratin and lobster bisque. Meats include truffle chicken breast, steak tartar, and hands-down the most succulent and subtly spiced lamb chops, which could convert any orthodox vegetarian without a hint of shame. Be sure to ask Mirande whether a white Bordeaux or his finest Cote-du-Rhone would best enhance the meal.

Dumoulin’s dessert menu offers something for everyone, even those with a stringent “no dessert for me” mantra. His selections in chocolate or fruit are effortless: Island vanilla millefeuilles with raspberry sorbet, strawberry pie in a cup with pistachio cream, coconut cremeux and exotic verrine, a selection of worldwide cheeses. In this last act, Dumoulin doesn’t disappoint. Be sure to ask Mirande for his thoughts; he might suggest a lovely Ramos Pinto 10-year-old port, an exquisite not-too-sweet and light addi-tion, to sip while listening to the lull of evening tide.

La Samanna has raised their standards all around, not exclud-ing the serving staff, trained meticulously on how to enhance your fine dining experience. Dumoulin and his team clearly take great pride in each course, as well as the pleasure of each customer, though it’s doubtful you’ll find another chef of his caliber quite so humble. He is an artist of the culinary craft, creating each mouthful as its own performance. La Saman-na’s renewed pledge to excellence is ongoing, mixed perfectly with a dash of “friendly island” St Martin smiles. Operations Manager Cipriani sums it best: “That’s the Caribbean way.”

DELIGHTPURE Mixology report

Trending Cocktails

By Joey Golini

TRENDS IN COCKTAILS Over the last few years the cocktail scene has exploded, with “mixologists” becoming just as important to a bar or club as the band or DJ. Bartenders have become virtual chefs behind the bar, creating elaborate and exquisite concoctions using ingredients usually found in the kitchen. One of the most popular trends is the infusion. An infusion is a drink, remedy, or extract prepared by soaking the leaves of a plant or herb in liquid. This is usually done with a spirit or a mixer such as simple syrup to enhance it with the flavor of whatever plant or herb you are using. We are seeing chile-infused tequila and basil-infused simple syrup, to name two. Mojitos have seen a resurgence in popularity and are offered in any number of flavors due the vast array of flavored rums. For example, Bacardi Rums are offered in flavors such as Dragon Berry, Torched Cherry, Red Peach, Grand Melon, Black Razz and Pineapple Fusion. Any one of these rums makes for an excellent-tasting mojito. Bartenders are starting to experiment with variations of the classic mojito by using

other white spirits. One of these variations is the Patron Silver Mojito. Yes, a tequila mojito. It offers a different twist to the classic sweet-tasting mojito. Try one and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised. NEW SPIRITS Honey has become all the rage lately and is being found in spirits like vodka, bourbon and whiskey. All offer their own taste characteristics, and it will be up to you to decide which you prefer. Some of the brands that have released a honey version are Jack Daniels Honey, Dewar’s Highlander Honey, Wild Turkey Honey and Stoli Honey. Dewar’s Highlander Honey is currently the only honey whiskey available on the island and is offered exclusively by Antillean Liquors NV. It is exceptionally soft on the pallet, with a sweet honey taste and smooth finish. It is best served over ice. Patron Spirits has released Patron XO Dark Cocoa, which is a variation of its popular Patron XO Café. This liqueur uses XO Café as its base but then adds a healthy dose of the finest Mexican dark chocolate to give this spirit a rich chocolate taste that gives you a warm, velvety finish.

Backlit by the bright midday streaming in through the doors and lightly sweaty from her prior training client, Virginie Burn hurries into the shake lounge, scans me

up and down and greets me with a warm, friendly hello and hug.

I’m there to interview this slip of a girl for Pure and cheerfully inform her she’s the cover. It would’ve been wiser to let her know after the interview; “quite speechless” doesn’t make my job easy.

How does such a tiny woman become a powerhouse in her industry? Determined to help others find the health and nu-trition programs they seek, fitness and health guru Virginie Burn inspires others at her “Temple” in Cupecoy, resolved to change the (literal) shape of her community. “I was not always fit, it was earned!

Try the Z-Rock.” This is a delightful frothy cookies–and-cream concoction better for me than imagined. I slurped away at the yummy protein shake and continued retrieving personal history.

Now married with two stunning children, Virginie runs her wellness empire out of ‘Temple Fitness & Nutrition,’ a “one-stop shop” for staying fit, eating healthy and living strong; within the “Temple” lies Z-Rock Fitness club, the protein shake bar and lounge, as well as a new healthy restaurant specializing in the ‘Paleo Diet.’

Z-Rock is aptly nicknamed “Z” from family name Zarovska (widely known as the Zarovska sisters, sounds like trouble to me...). “My sister thought my abs looked as hard as a rock. It stuck, hard.” So when business partner Marc offered a loca-tion for a top-of-the-line fitness facility in the front of Rainbow Beach club, the name was obvious.

By the way also hard as a rock is business partner Marc who is busy lurking in the corner interjecting musings, answers, anec-dotes and great stories I know better than to put in print. I’m wondering if I can get him to show me his abs. I’m the press; it’s only right. I make a quick joke about it; they both roar with laughter. Don’t they know I’m serious?

Anyway... France-born Virginie immigrated to French SXM at 13 with her dad and sisters Kristel and Jennifer. Either in-structing at the gym or training private clients, she specialized in women’s fitness for losing weight, cardio and strength train-ing, spinning, aerobics and Pilates. “Although a chubby young woman losing pregnancy weight was my original inspiration to get fit, Z-Rock is about Family. They are my family and I love them. My life is my family and friends. I’ve finally found where I belong with Z-Rock; I wake excited every day to go to work because I love what I do!” Can’t beat that type of enthusiasm and commitment, can you?

This hot “IT GIRL” seems to love everything ‘SXM fashion’ and more. “I have been reminded my closet is full of heels

and sneakers (a secret 40+ pair trainer hoard, what?) I collect them but everyone doesn’t need to know exactly the numbers of trainers sitting in my closet!” Yes we do.

Brightly colored fitness apparel, yes, but mainly Bebe dresses. Virginie loves shopping in France, at Marie Bella and Coco’s (who doesn’t) and online at Nordstrom’s and Eastbay.com (athletic gear) but plans on opening her own fitness clothing and kit outfit inside the Temple as well.

“I love cardio, detox strategies, inventing new programs, and taking care of people! It’s why I’m so excited for our new res-taurant!” This mysterious ‘Paleo’-focused restaurant was ex-plained to me as creative and simple grilled fish, beef, shrimp, and wraps--perfect!

She’s a ‘foodie’ like me whose diet includes ‘skinny girl foods’ like fish and sushi (as does mine; no wonder I’ve spotted her strutting her little fit stuff at Moulon Fou, Rare and Bamboo and hanging at Pinel, Layla’s and Loterie Farm more times than I can recall). “It’s a cosmopolitan melting pot, almost a small American Europe. I even love the pizzas at Boat Bar.” (OMG, how did she know??!! Now we’re soul-sisters.) Then Marc pipes in, “Don’t forget to tell her about your chocolate problem.” Wow.

I was able to shake hands with Virginie’s sister and kids when stopping in so I hastily asked what makes Mom a ‘leading woman; of course I got the “lives with integrity and truth, has a warm friendly heart, is well-intended and always willing” stuff, but honestly, Virginie is a strong, determined and charismatic lady who is solidly balancing daily dedication to her husband, children, family and client-family.

Virginie reminds me of Alicia Keys’ song ‘This Girl Is On Fire’ because her kiddies get plenty of mommy time, prioritizing homework, movies, beach time and weekly walks over all else. “It wasn’t easy but my husband Cameron has been my ‘rock’ through all the ups and downs, helping me achieve my dreams.”

Her dreams include travel, especially their long weekends in Antigua. “Cameron’s family goes back a few generations there but we love Guadeloupe, Barbados and California, too. My fa-ther took us to the most beautiful places in Europe, which is where my sisters and I developed love for travel. The Sey-chelles Islands, Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, Holland, England and Italy but Macedonia will always have my heart. My sisters and I still go to Macedonia every Summer together.”

Virginie’s got a lot of energy that emanates, glowing from her pores, and is contagious. It might have been the stunning palatial environment, the energy of the gym, the soul of the woman or even the Z-Rock protein shake. I left with more en-ergy than I came with, and I didn’t even work out.
