Pultruded Profiles & Tubes

In 1951, Teel Plastics began producing custom plastic tubing and profiles. In 1992, we embarked on the development and manufacture of fiberglass thermoset profiles and tubing. Since then we have become experts in a variety of applications targeting the following markets: medical, converting, water filtration, automotive, plastic packaging, fenestration, tool handles and many others.

Smart. Dedicated. Resourceful. Above all – Precise!

The Teel difference is the extreme level of precision employees bring to their work. For six decades we have specialized in the custom extrusion of thermoplastic close tolerance plastic tubing and profile products.

We are proud of the innovative products we’ve brought to the markets we serve, like co-extruded tubing. We’ve combined our employee skills along with unique manufacturing techniques to earn a reputation as a proven leader of high quality, made-to-order plastic tubing, cores, profiles and natural fiber composite products.

Keeping Customers Satisfaction and Quality in Focus

To achieve customer satisfaction we do something very simple. We listen. We strive to know each customer and are committed to identify their needs, defining our capabilities and ensuring that we can satisfy those needs. We realize that continuous improvement is essential for our success. We work to anticipate trends and customer demands.

At Teel, we value our ISO 9001 certification and we facilitate total quality throughout our entire business to ensure customer satisfaction. This methodology has resulted in a 99.5% on time delivery rating for our industrial customers with an enviable .001% return on sales.

Teel’s New Headquarters Accommodates Its Expanding Extrusion Division

We are proud to say that the objectives of this project were shared by every member of the Teel Plastics team. We worked together to realize the design and building of the environmentally conscious 150,000 square foot facility focused on lean manufacturing. Lean manufacturing reduces waste, costs and production time while increasing customer satisfaction and quality.

Engineering Excellence

We pride ourselves on having an engineering team that is one of the most experienced and innovative in the industry. We have on staff more than 286 years of engineering experience and 20 different degrees including Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Science/Industrial Technology, Composite Technology, Business and Technology Management, Polymer Chemistry, Physics and Industrial Technology Development.

Our goal is to produce and deliver the highest quality product in the most cost efficient manner possible. Period. That is what makes Teel measurably better.

Pultrusion Capabilities

Teel Plastics is a leading manufacturer of tight tolerance, high quality pultruded tubing for the lawn and garden industry and custom designed thin walled complex profiles used in the fenestration and refrigeration markets. Teel also offers a variety of custom profiles used in a multitude of markets including electrical, construction and recreation.

Material selections may include fiberglass, carbon and aramid fibers as well as a multitude of off axis reinforcements.

The majority of Teel’s pultrusions consist of thermosetting polyester resins. In addition, we have the capability to manufacture composites using vinylester and epoxy resin systems.

Teel offers value added fabrication options that include painting, drilling, notching and assembly as well as the use of adhesives for bonding dissimilar materials to the composite. Fire retardants, UV stabilizers and a variety of colors are available and can be incorporated into the final product based on customer requirements

Pultruded products:

• Thin walled complex profiles • Tubes from .75” to 1.75” OD. • Minimum walls as low as .075” (based on OD) • Structural shapes including rods, channels, angles, I-Beams and flat strips

Materials used in pultrusion:

• Polyester, vinylester, epoxy resins • Fire retardant • UV stabilizers • Fiberglass, carbon fiber, aramid fiber

Other features:

• Multitude of color ranges • Various cross strength reinforcements • Off axis reinforcements • Lengths up to 20’ • Cut tolerance down to +/- .032” • Fabrication options for drilling and routing • Mitered end cuts • Product design capabilities • ISO 9001 certified

Pultrusion Process

Teel Plastics’ pultrusion process consists of impregnating reinforcements with a thermosetting resin system. The reinforcements typically consist of fiberglass, carbon fiber, aramid fiber or mixtures of the three. When using these in the uni-directional manner, those materials would provide stiffness to the composite. These materials can also be manufactured in a matting material that could be included into the composite to provide off axis properties which would increase crush, burst strength and increase holding power to fasteners. Surfacing veils can also be added to provide a smoother surface when the product requires handling.

The thermosetting resin formulation typically would be based off of polyester, vinylester, epoxy or urethane polymers. Fillers, pigments, shrink control agents and catalysts would also be included at various levels based on the application and product design requirements.

Percentages of the reinforcements to resin content can be modified to create different types of properties for the composite. For example, more uni-directional fiber would equate to more stiffness. Composites generally use 55-60% reinforcement and 45% resin by weight.

Typically, the reinforcements are wet-out in a resin bath and would then enter a guiding system that would gradually shape the material prior to entering the die. This formed package would then enter into a heated die that would then trigger the thermosetting resin reaction which would result in a cured product as it exits the die. As the material enters the die, it is compressed and excess resin is stripped away. Since this is a closed mold process the product requires a constant cross section.

Throughout this process the “pultruder” is continually pulling the cured product through the die and into a saw which will cut the product to length. Typical pultruders come as a hand over hand style or a caterpillar type of design. Because of the continuous pulling action, infinite lengths of final product are possible.

Strong Fiberglass Tool Handles

Teel Plastics supplies unique designs and properties in the manufacturing of its pultruded tool handles. Special materials are utilized to meet the requirements or to solve customer issues that they can’t find with other pultruders. We can manufacture pultruded tool handles in almost any size, wall thickness, color and shape that is required. We also provide many different custom finishing operations to include: drilling, slotting, assembly, routing, and gluing of tips and caps.

Pultruded Tool Handle Capabilities

Surface: Standard colors available or we can match a special Pantone color. Teel has developed a manufacturing process for producing a smooth, high quality finish that many believe is the best available in the industry. Specialty veils are also used to add a unique appearance to many tool handles.

Length: Standard length tolerance is ± .125” for tubes and profiles. A tighter tolerance is possible, depending on customer needs.

Bow or camber: .030” per foot from straight is standard, although a tighter tolerance is possible depending on part design.

Glass content: Percentage of fiberglass by weight will vary between 55 and 65%, depending on profile design.

Squareness of cut: Generally ± 1/2° in vertical and horizontal directions.

Angularity of horizontal or vertical legs: ± 1 degree.

Engineering support: Teel Plastics believes that working with customers to design parts that are pultrusion-friendly and meet each customer’s specific requirements is critical to the success of a project.

Our pultruded tool handle markets include: • Lawn and garden tool handle • Snow shovel handles • Broom handles • Mop handles • Paint roller handles • And more…
