Have you noticed how empty our faculty is?Well, the students might be there but what arethey doing? Is the school of medicine all about courses, exams and le3eb wara2 in the cafeteria??A group of students gathered to change thissituation and bring life to the faculty that teachesall about life. A lot of potential, a need forexpression, and a brainstorm of ideas is all it tookto establish MEDCLUB.What is MEDCLUB? It is an academic club that

joins students of all years. Aimed at publishingarticles, organizing extracurricular activities,

establishing contact with other faculties ofmedicine, and hopefully organizing lectures andproviding guidance for pursuing education inspecialty medicine. It is true that we have a very busy schedule, anda congested lifestyle. But still it is not impossibleto find the time to reduce the stress whether insports, leisure or academic activities.

Stem Cells: A debate between Science, Ethics & Politics

A Stem cell possesses twoproperties: Self-renewal - theability to go through numerouscycles of cell division whilemaintaining the undifferentiatedstate and Potency- the capacityto differentiate into specializedcell types. The two broad types ofmammalian stem cells are:embryonic stem cells that arefound in blastocysts, and adultstem cells that are found inadult tissues. In the medical field: Medicalresearchers believe that stemcell therapy has the potential todramatically change thetreatment of human disease. Anumber of adult stem celltherapies already exist, particularly bone marrowtransplants that are used totreat leukemia. In the future,

MEDCLUB needed a heart to pump our ideas, itneeded lungs to breath our hopes and ambitions.Initially we were reluctant to take our project astep further. It needed time and resources wemight not have. But all of that faded in the face of a relentlessdrive and a lot of motivation. Hence PULSEwasborn, a magazine that offers the ability ofexpression to students to communicate thoughtsand opinions. This is the start, humble and slow in front ofexpectations and ambitions. Still it is destined tomake a difference. So lets make the difference,

lets enrich our journey in the faculty of medicine.Every one counts.

medical researchers anticipatebeing able to use technologiesderived from stem cell researchto treat a wider variety ofdiseases including cancer,Parkinson's disease, spinal cordinjuries, and muscle damage. The ethical debate: Humanembryonic stem cell research iscontroversial because, with thepresent state of technology, starting a stem cell linerequires the destruction of ahuman embryo. So it is not theentire field of stem cellresearch, but the specific fieldof human embryonic stem cellresearch that is at the center ofan ethical debate. In the political field: the debatetook place mostly in the Unitedstates where in 1993 presidentBill Clinton gave completeauthority to fund human

embryo stem cell research forthe first time. Several yearslater, president GeorgeW.Bush signs an executiveorder which restricts federally-funded stem cell research onembryonic stem cells but hesupported federal funding forresearch on adult and animalstem cells. Despite this fact,Human embryonic stem cellresearch continues but withnon governmental financialsources.

La relation sexuelle plutt que la

rvlant certaines inaptitudesdentente mutuelles, de sacrifices

par respect de lautre et laisser

    lamour le temps de spanouir

avant de passer lacte sexuel qui

    est une apoge sensuelle et

cest la gloire du corps, la propre

me permets de dire que lamour

    qui inonde, lamour vrai est

lamour qui dure et non lamour

En dehors du cadre de lamour,

    Michael Ellis DeBakeyborn Michel Dabaghi onSeptember 7, 1908 is ap i o n e e r i n gcardiovascular surgeonand researcher. Dr.DeBakey's parents were

    Lebanese immigrants.He received hisbachelor's and M.D.degrees from TulaneUniversity in NewO r l e a n s . H evolunteered for military

service during World War II, becoming theDirector of the Surgical Consultants' Division inthe United States Army Surgeon General's Office. This prolific humanitarian has performed morethan 60,000 cardiovascular procedures and has

trained thousands of surgeons who practicethrough the world. He has operated on heads ofstate, princes and celebrities, as well as paupers, with the same exacting surgical technique andcompassion to all. He is credited with inventingand perfecting scores of medical devices, techniques and procedures which have led to

    Psychologicaldistinctions betweenmen and women

    - Men are buildersand creators. Theytake risks andexperiment, while

women select themost valuableknowledge and passit over to the nextgeneration.

    - Men are moreindependent in theirthoughts andactions, whilewomen are morewilling to follow theideas suggested by

    others.

    - Womens self-appraisal is lowerthan that of men.Women tend tocriticize themselves, while men are moresatisfied with theirown performance.

    - Men and womenhave differentsources ofsatisfaction. Formen its career and

    prosperity, whilewomen value familyand kids.

    - Men have apronounced need tofulfill their goals, and women rankrelationships withothers first.

    - Men get sick twiceas often as women, although womentend to be more

    concerned abouttheir health.

    - Women toleratepain andmonotonous workbetter than men.

    Does Smoking Help Stress?

    Nicotine is a stimulant and

acts as a 'pick-me-up'. Itreleases chemicals in your

    b r a i n , c a l l e dneurotransmitters, and it'sthought that these improveyour mood and make youfeel better.Many people think that

smoking cigarettes helps tocalm them down. However, these feelings usually only

last for a short period of timebecause withdrawal from

nicotine gradually makesyou feel worse and yourgood mood is only restoredwhen the strong desire issatisfied with anothercigarette.Smoking increases stress

levels due to the constantneed to top up nicotinelevels. The problems with

using smoking to cope withstress include:

healthy hearts and productive lives for millionsthroughout the world. Dacron arteries, arterialbypass operations, artificial hearts, heart pumpsand heart transplants are common procedures intoday's medicine, thanks to Dr. DeBakey. To the amazement of his colleagues and patients,Dr. DeBakey continued to practice medicine into

an age well after most others have retired. OnDecember 31, 2005, at age 97, Dr. DeBakeysuffered an aortic dissection, the very conditionthat his pioneering procedure was designed totreat. He became the oldest patient ever toundergo the surgery for which he wasresponsible. After an operation lasted sevenhours, Dr. DeBakey was released in September2006 and has returned to good health.Dr. DeBakey has received numerous honorarydegrees from prestigious colleges anduniversities as well as innumerable awards from

educational institutions, professional and civicorganizations, and governments worldwide. With his keen intellect, professional ingenuity, personal integrity and selfless devotion tohumanity, Dr. Michel Dabaghi is a living legendand a genuine healer of the human heart.

    -Relief is only temporary:

Stress will return and you'llsoon need to smoke another

cigarette.-Smoking does not solveyour problems: it only hidesthem. The cause of theproblem remains.-Smoking actually causes

more stress than it relieves:scientific studies show thatafter giving up, stress levels

    decrease.Your anxiety may be

increased if you're worryingabout trying to give upsmoking. You may feelirritable and stressed whenyou quit smoking, but it'simportant to rememberthat this is a sign that your

body is repairing itself fromthe effects of nicotine. If smoking was your main

way of coping with stress, after quitting you'll need to

    find new, better ways of

    stress relief. Exercise,reading and relaxation

techniques, such as deepbreathing exercises, aregood alternatives and willhelp you to take yourmind off a stressfulsituation and improve your

    mood.

As cosmetic surgery becomes more accessible toall, people no longer have to accept nature'simperfections. In fact, According to the AmericanSociety of Plastic Surgeons website, the numberof breast augmentations increased 657% from1992-2003. It also said that five times as manyliposuctions were performed from 1992-2003.

The site also stated, "Over 12 years, from 1992-2003, the number of cosmetic plastic surgeryprocedures has increased 424 percent." Thenumbers are still continually increasing not onlyin the U.S.A but also worldwide includingLebanon. What is plastic surgery?Plastic surgery goes back to the 8th century BC!It has tremendously evolved throughout years.Nowadays, It is divided to reconstructive andcosmetic plastic surgery.1-Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is performed tocorrect functional impairments caused by burns,

    traumatic injuries (facial bone fractures),congenital abnormalities, developmentalabnormalities, infection or disease and removalof cancers or tumors (mastectomy).2- The term "cosmetic surgery" however, refersto surgery that is designed to improvea p p e a r a n c e : a b d o m i n o p l a s t y , A s i a nblepharoplasty, mammoplasty, buttockaugmentation, rhinoplasty, otoplasty,

cause is Media that is promoting western beautyas the only key to happiness, wealth, fame andlove. Striking fact: 55% of Japanese youngwomen go to plastic surgery, changing theircharacteristic features to match Hollywoodstandards. One of the biggest worries is aboutthe surgeons, who are willing to continueoperating on these women, where are theirmedical ethics??Actually, the root of the problem lies in theinsecurity, lack of confidence and discontent. Therefore, society should be trying to helppeople to get over their fear rather than

fostering the belief that by changing theirexterior they can solve all their worries. In fact, ifyou 'fix' one thing there'll soon be somethingelse you don't like about yourself. Be happy withwhat you have, instead of stressing over whatyou do not have.
