Mechanical pulp is obtained by pressingdebarked logs against wet grindstones.The process is made more efficient byfirst grinding the chips in the refiners.Quite often steam plays a role in thisdefibration. The final product is calledthermomechanical pulp. When reac-tants are added to initiate the separa-tion of lignin and cellulose, the resultis chemithermomechanical pulp.These different types of mechanicalpulps are suitable for makingnewsprint.

To prepare chemical pulp (the bestknown is called “Kraft,” which means“strength” in German), chips arecooked under high pressure in hugepressure cookers (called digesters)into which chemicals have beenpoured. The combined action of theseproducts and the heat dissolves thelignin and frees the wood’s long fibres,but without breaking them. Papersmade from chemical pulp providestrength and are used to make grocerybags, for example.

Recovered paper and cardboard usedin the preparation of recycled pulp aresent through huge repulpers (breakers)for disintegration, then mixed withwater. Contaminants (plastic, glass,metal, polystyrene, etc.) are removedfrom this mix using screens and acleaner. If need be, the pulp obtainedis then deinked through the combinedaction of water, chemical products,heat and mechanical energy. Recycledpulp is often used to make cardboard,newsprint, and industrial and domes-tic tissue products (toilet paper, papertowels, facial tissues, napkins, etc.).

3 To make certain types of paper andcardboard, pulp must be bleached.The products used help to dissolveor eliminate more of the lignin, thenatural adhesive that binds woodfibres. The product obtained is notonly white, but also less likely toyellow over time. Intensive researchand significant investment haveenabled the industry to consider-ably reduce the environmentalimpact of bleaching.

4 The pulp entering the headbox isgenerally 97% water. It is sprayedonto a conveying wire (i.e., a kindof long screen in the form of acontinuous loop). Its filteringaction, combined with a suctionsystem, makes it possible to extractmost of the water in the pulp andform a sheet. Pressing this betweenrollers removes more water. Thesheet then passes into the dryingsection where, on contact withhuge cylinders generally heatedwith steam, most of the remainingwater is evaporated. Nowadays,infrared drying, air flotation dryingand microwave drying are theleading-edge technologies formaking the water content of thesheet uniform. 1 Precious commodity that it is, wood is

used primarily to produce constructionmaterials. Paper and cardboard areincreasingly made from sawmill by-products (chips, sawdust and shavings)and recycled paper and cardboard.Roundwood harvested from the forestis now only a minor source of fibresupply for the paper industry.Whenever logs are still used in theprocess, they are debarked after arrivingat the mill. The bark is recovered andused as a fuel for producing steamand, occasionally, electricity.
