PS/IS 208 Grade 5 Class Trip Louis Armstrong Museum Louis Armstrong—the world’s most famous jazz musician—was an international celebrity who could have lived anywhere. Dear Family: The Fifth Grade students have been invited to visit the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona, Queens. In 1943, he and his wife, Lucille, settled in a modest house in Corona, Queens, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. No one has lived in the house since the Armstrong’s and the house and its furnishings remain very much as they were during Louis and Lucille’s lifetime. On our tour, audio clips from Louis’s homemade recordings are played, and we will hear Louis practicing his trumpet, enjoying a meal, or talking with his friends. Visitors also get to enjoy an exhibit on Louis’s life and legacy, and the Armstrong’s beautiful Japanese-inspired garden. Hopefully, this trip will expose our students to era of Jazz music and how important it is to our musical culture. The students will have the opportunity to listen to Louis Armstrongs music prior to visiting the house. We will study his legacy and the importance of his musical career in our lives today. If anybody was Mr. Jazz it was Louis Armstrong. He was the epitome of jazz and always will be. He is what I call an American standard, and American original. ----- Duke Ellington As of now all of our students are invited to join us, however if any child is experiencing behavior issues whether in the classroom, in the cafeteria, in special classes, on the playground or on the school bus, we will ask that the parents of those students accompany us on the trip, or the child/children be left behind in another class. We as a grade love to expose our students to the rich cultural environment of this wonderful city. But we cannot be responsible for students who do not behave properly in school. DATE OF TRIP December 7, 2016 FEE - $7.00 DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18! SIGN and return the permission slip attached to this letter.
