Alonzo Mourning (C92) and former lieutenant governor Kathleen KennedyTownsend joined Georgetown experts on six panels throughout the after-noon ... Opening the session was seven-time NBA All-Star Alonzo Mourn-ing (C92), now chair of the Alonzo Mourning Charities, Inc. ... Mourningwelcomed the group of Georgetown alumni and people in attendance to aplace he called home. He said that this campaign would build on the richtraditions that were started in 1789 and that in doing so, issues would bediscussed that will shape this campaign for generations to come ... Ad-

versity introduces a man to himself, Mourning said. This is somethingI quickly learned through my lifes journey as I tried to reach what I de-fined as personal success. I think everyone here has personal successes, what they define as success, whether it be making a team, getting that jobyou wanted, winning a game, possibly even losing a couple of pounds, which Ive learned since I retired is a little more challenging. ... The retiredNBA great said service, preparation and relationship have kept him bal-anced in life. We cannot grow by ourselves at all, he said to an audienceof Georgetown alumni and others. This university has been stimulatinggrowth since 1789 and it all starts with giving, it all starts with you. ...After Mournings talk, President John J. DeGioia moderated a conversationon Profit and Play with Mens Basketball Head Coach John ThompsonIII and former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue (C62), chair of George-towns board of directors ... The panel discussion focused on several topics, starting with the Georgetown basketball teams trip to China this summer ...We have a very young team this year, Thompson said. So as a coach,

if we were going to take foreign trip, this was it. The opportunity to go toAsia was something that excited me, so selfishly, it was great. Thinking notfrom just the Georgetown perspective, but also to try and grow and becomethe most popular team in China and to grow our brand, it made sense. There are as many people that play basketball in China that there are in theUnited States. The sheer numbers as a basketball coach, it made sense.... Among other topics, Tagliabue and Thompson discussed the changingnature of sports at the intercollegiate and amateur level, whether student-athletes should be paid, working within the subset of NCAA rules, develop-ing relationships, the need to reconsider the structure of governance andconference realignment. ... I think that the model in and of itself is goingthrough an evolution, Thompson said of the pressure to maintain the in-tercollegiate model. Is there pressure to maintain it as it currently exists?Absolutely, on different fronts. Whether its the governance and how we cango about running a program and running an athletic department, coupledwith the attention that is, as of late, going into the sheer dollars that are

being pumped into intercollegiate athletics. It causes you to look at whatthe primary responsibilities of intercollegiate athletics, which is education. We have to totally re-evaluate every aspect of intercollegiate athletics andhow its governed. .... Before closing, DeGioia asked Thompson about histhoughts on the Hoyas this year as the season draws closer. Im probablyas excited about this year starting as I have been about the last couple ofyears, Thompson said. You have a four-year window and then you get adifferent group. One of the things that always excites me is that every yearyou get a whole new group. I am excited about working with this group. They are eager, willing and theyre talented.... No matter how hard prac-tices are, how trying the Bayi Rockets were, theres nothing like life in theBIG EAST. Im extremely excited about this group and hopefully well winmore than A game. They get me excited to come into the gym.

Dont let the sum totalof your existence be

    8-10 pounds of air.

The deflated basketball, thetrademark for Georgetown

    Basketball since 1972, is a

message for each new recruit. The deflated ball gets players to

understand that one day basketballwill be over, be it four years from

now when you graduate, or 20

years from now when your NBAcareer is over, says coach John

Thompson III. One day the airsgoing to go out of that ball, so you

have to prepare yourself for life

after basketball. The symbol is as relevant today

as it was when coach Thompsonsillustrious father ran the program.

    The Georgetown tradition of

graduation 107 of 109 membersof the mens basketball program

that have stayed four years havereceived their degree continues

under John Thompson III.Education ensures success, and a

    future without education has the

    value of an empty basketball.

WHAT IS A HOYA?Many years ago, when all Georgetown students were

required to study Greek and Latin, the Universitys teams

were nicknamed The Stonewalls. It is suggested that a

student, using Greek and Latin terms, started the cheer

Hoya Saxa!, which translates into What Rocks! The

name proved popular and the term Hoyas was eventually

    adopted for all Georgetown teams.
