Proverbs 18 1a Through desire (lust; selfish desire) a man, having separated himself (walked away), …

A selfish and self-centered man will always

walk away from God and go his own way, contrary to any Wisdom.

He also may walk away from his parents, who tried to teach him right.

He often walks away from his wife and children.

Proverbs 18 1b … seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.

Intermeddleth = to be obstinate Strong’s Hebrew

He is stubbornly determined to be wrong.

2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

(NIV) 2 A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.

May we delight in learning and living the Word of God.

Therein lies abundant life.

3 When the wicked ( wickedness) cometh, then cometh also contempt (disrespect), and with ignominy (disgraceful or dishonorable conduct) reproach (rebuke; shame).

Sin leads to contempt, leads to more vile sin, leads to rebuke and

shame.

One who chooses wicked-ness gets no respect, even from himself.

4 The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of Wisdom as a flowing brook.

When we speak our own thoughts they are often dark and dangerous, as deep waters.

Words of Wisdom are like a flowing brook, fresh, bubbling, and

beautiful.

Proverbs 16:24 (KJV) Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Talking isn’t bad; what kind of talk?

5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

To be partial to the wicked -- perhaps for

their money, or excitement, or popularity

Leads to sin.

6-7 A fool's lips enter into contention (controversy; strife), and his mouth calleth for strokes. A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

What mischief bad men do to themselves by their ungoverned tongues!

8 The words of a talebearer (whisperer; slanderer) are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Proverbs 26:20 (NIV) Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.

Proverbs 16:28 (NIV) A perverse man stirs up dissension (contentious quarreling), and a gossip separates close friends.

We must use our words to bless; not to distress.
