A S Y M M E T R I C N AVA L WA R FA R E - T H E T H R E ATShipstransitingchokepoints,suchastheStraitofHormuz,mayfaceanasymmetricnavalthreatconsistingofaswarmoffastinshoreattackcraftcapableofspeedsinexcessof50knots.Someofthoseswarmvesselsmustclosewithinvisualdetectionrangeoftheirtarget,wheretheyarevulnerabletothetarget’sdefences.However,swarmvesselsarmedwithlongerrangeradarorinfrared-guidedanti-shipmissilescouldlaunchlethalattacksfrombeyondvisualrange.Tocounterthesemorelethal‘SilverBullet’threatsrequiresalayereddefense,wherebytheshipunderattackwouldrelyonarmedhelicoptersandUAVstodetect,identifyanddestroythe‘SilverBullet’threatsbeforetheylaunchtheirmissiles.

Aship’sverysurvivaldependson:timelyidentificationofthelethalthreatvessels;closecoordinationandaccuratecommunica-tionsbetweentheCombatInformationCentre(CIC),thebridgeteam,lookoutsandcrew-servedweaponoperators;andoptimaltaskingofsupportinghelicoptersandarmedUAVstoneutralisethe‘SilverBullet’threats.Thewholedefensiveteammustworkasonewithacarefullycoordinatedresponsetoprovideanacceptablechanceofcounteringtheswarmattack.

ThePROTEUSSwarmTrainerprovidesatrainingenvironmentwheretheperformanceofthewholelayereddefenceteamcanbehonedtoperfection.CustomerscaneitherpurchaseanewPROTEUSSwarmTrainersolution,ortheirexistingtrainerscanbefederatedintoaPROTEUSSwarmTrainerusingwell-provenhighlevelarchitecture(HLA)ordistributedinteractivesimulation(DIS)protocols.OncetheappropriatetrainingsystemsarelinkedtotheSwarmTrainerrun-timeinfrastructure(RTI),alltraineesbenefitfrombeinglinkedtogetherinacommonscenariowheretheycanpractisetheirinteractionasinreallife.ThePROTEUSSwarmTrainerimprovescrewresponseunderpressuretodefendtheirshipandenhancetheirchancesofsurvival.
