THE GROUP
8308uk/4/10/16/28308uk/4/10/16/26 7
The entire flexible metal hose and expansion joint industry owes its origin to the stripwound hose that was invented by Heinrich Witzenmann in 1885. This innovative spirit has been maintained at Witzenmann to the present day. Sophisticated products and innovative solutions have made the company a technological leader in the industry. Over 2,500 patents have been filed to date, which bears witness to the innovative strength of the company. Flexible metal hoses and expansi-
on joints under the HYDRA brand name are used in the most diverse areas of application within the automotive indus-try, general industry, the astronautics sector and technical building equipment. This also includes special applications in optoelectronics, medical technology and renewable energy. Always the best solution - both economically and qualita-tively. Our numerous approvals attest to this.
PIONEER AND PARTNER
We have been providing customised, high quality and cost-effective HYDRA® product solutions for over 100 years.

The field of optoelectronics includes products and processes that enable electronically generated data and energy to be converted into light emission. The light thereby serves as a transmission medium for information and data. Special, highly flexible HYDRA stripwound hoses with a minimum outside diameter of 1.4 mm are used in this field. These hoses protect the inner bundled beam of light from external mechanical damage. The reflection-free and completely tight passage of the medium is ensured thanks to the inner lining of the flexible metal hose with silicone or other similar
material. The hose is provided with an outer sheathing which protects it from dirt or abrasive fluids depending on the area of application.
Applications include medical technology, technical endosco-py and semiconductor technology. Stripwound hoses for op-toelectronics are solvent-resistant and liquid-tight in accor-dance with demands. Various materials such as refined steel and non-ferrous metals (e.g. brass and aluminium) further enhance the scope of application of these special hoses.
The advantagessmallest possible outside diameter, approx. 1.4 mm with 0.35 mm interior coil.p Highly flexible, with bending radius limitationp High tensile strength and very slight elongationp Resistant to torsion and transversal pressurep Autoclavable, light- and liquid-tightp Smooth interior surface – completely free of burrs
OPTO- ELECTRONICSOptoelectronics, for example, shows how our engineering process specifies the design principle of an established industrial application for a future technology.

They weld, cut, drill or treat surfaces with high precision and at very high operating speeds. Particularly high demands are made on the lines from the light source to the tool in glass fibre technology. The protective hoses must be resistant to tensile loads and to kinking, as well as transversal stress.
The lines must guarantee a maximum degree of safety for laser technology. Even in the event of damage to the inner laser conductor, no light may escape to the outside. The supply lines directly on the tool head must be highly flexible, yet extremely sturdy at the same time. A special hose construction is used to accommodate the large impact forces and handle the rapid change of direction here.
Technical endoscopy is used wherever the construction of a product or a plant does not permit a visual inspection or, for example, in the nuclear technology sector if the area requi-ring examination is in a hazard zone. Technical endoscopy is often the quickest and most cost-effective measure for quality assurance or troubleshooting procedures.
Witzenmann is the only manufacturer to produce the interior coil of the hose from round wire. In addition to the characte-ristics of conventional flat wire coils, this offers the advan-tage of a completely smooth and non-abrasive inner surface. This enables glass fibre wires and light conductors to be inserted more easily without being damaged. The hoses are coated with PU or PVC depending on the respective application. A braiding embedded within the hose provides pressure resistance and tensile strength.
The advantages p Extremely sturdy, even with high-speed operating cycles
and high impact forcesp Bending radius limited by design to protect the inner light
conductorp Completely crush-proofp High strength properties under alternating flexural stress
INDUSTRYLaser-based procedures have become firmly esta-blished in industrial production. HYDRA® Strip-wound hoses offer reliable protection here under extreme stress.

The sensitive high-tech equipment used in human medicine must be protected from mechanical and chemical influences.
With an inner diameter of 0.3 mm, the protective hoses allow examinations to be conducted with minimal damage to human tissue and minimal disruption of the patient's internal organs. The field of high-tech medicine is now hard to imagine without the highly flexible HYDRA stripwound hoses from Witzenmann. These light- and liquid-tight hoses fulfil stringent U.S. regulations according to Pharmacopoeia Class VI and are classified as biocompatible in accordance with DIN/ISO 10993 1-5.
In other words the hoses, comparable to a medical implant, do not have a negative effect on the human body. Their sur-face finish and pressure resistant properties enable simple disinfection, even for autoclave sterilisation.
The advantages p Small diameter for minimally invasive medicine p Strict pharmaceutical standardsp Suitable for autoclave sterilisationp Particularly smooth and durable interior and exterior sur-
facesp Certified biocompatibility
Minimally invasive medicine has led to a revolution in medical technology. Examinations and even surgery can be performed gently through the use of endoscopic probes. MEDICAL
TECHNOLOGY
8308uk/4/10/16/28308uk/4/10/16/214 15
The most stringent of hygiene requirements are prevalent throughout the production cycles in these sectors. The entire production process is continually subjected to exac-ting inspections with strict test parameters. The HYDRA metallic protective hoses enable the use of sensitive sensors, as well as light and measurement technology in the ongoing production process.
The materials and processing methods used fulfil the high standards of the food and pharmaceutical industries. The sturdy, liquid-tight flexible metal hoses protect the sensitive technology internally and are able to withstand intensive cleaning processes.
This enables the construction and design to be specifically adapted to the respective conditions. Our broad product range covers highly specified protective hoses which fulfil the most diverse demands. All designs are characterised by a high degree of flexibility and tensile strength and are resistant to torsion and transversal pressure.
The advantages p Insensitive to external influences and mechanical stressp Various hose configurations for the best economical soluti-
on in each casep Hygienic surfacesp Durable and sturdy, even when subjected to intensive
stress during use and when cleaningp High tensile strength ensured by metal or fibre glass
braidingFOOD AND PHARMA- CEUTICALS
Maximum product quality and compatibility with the human body define the requirements for food production, pharmaceuticals and the cosmetics industry.

Application
ApplicationFlexible arms, popularly known as "swan necks", for uses such as lamp bracket hoses or microphone arms. Applications are also common in the fibre optic field (such as cold light sources and measuring equipment), for welding shields, traffic-control sys-tems, car phones, medical technology, etc.
Designp Flexible yet resistant to bendingp Combination of interior round wire with a triangular wire spiral inserted from outside
Versions Customised designs are common in many cases, however, we are only able to list the standard series here. If this does not cover your demands and you have application-specific requirements, please let us know. Take advantage of our long-standing expe-rience and expert advice.
Materialsp Steel/brassp Stainless steel/brass
Load capacityThe load capacity of flexible arms depends on their nominal size (NS) and the length of the support coil. The term 'carrying length' (l) describes the length at which a vibration-free support coil, horizontally clamped on one side, is permitted to sink under its own weight by a distance not exceeding its own outside diameter. The diagram on the next page shows the relationship between nominal size (NS) and maximum load (p).
Installation notesFlexible arms are to be bent uniformly; the minimum bending radius should not be exceeded under any circumstances.
