• HELLENIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS ORGANIZATION S.A. - OTE AE (ORGANISMOS TILEPIKOINONION TIS ELLADOS OTE AE) – OTE (GR)

2020 drivers

• Mobile, data center and cloud applications

• Annual global IP traffic will surpass the zettabyte threshold (1.4 zettabytes) by the end of 2017 [Cisco, Sandvinne]

• Metro traffic will surpass long-haul traffic in 2014, and will account for 58 percent of total IP traffic by 2017

• Surging demand is pushing current static networks to their limits

SPIRIT vision

• Scale transceiver capacity to 1Tb/s

• Single and multi-carrier QAM (up to 16bits/s/Hz spectral efficiency)

• Variable Baud rate (up to 32 Gbaud)

• Introduce flexibility in data transmission

• Shape traffic spectrum based on application requirements

• Gridless operation for Tb/s Superchannels

• Add intelligence in the optical transport

• SDN platform development

• Performance monitoring

• Leverage cost/performance benefits

• power & cost savings by at least 50% Software Defined

Flexible Transceiver

Terabit superchannel

SPIRIT Objectives

• Fabrication of high-speed, low-voltage drive (Vπ ≈ 1V), InP MZM modulators with segmented electrodes

• Fabrication of low-power CMOS PATH modulator logic circuit and binary driver arrays based on cost-efficient 40nm CMOS processing

• Fabrication of an optical MUX/DEMUX based on tunable filters for superchannel grooming on a gridless basis (<10GHz step) over the C-band

• Development and fabrication of packaged and fiber-pigtailed fully-programmable, high-speed, low-power, integrated flexible transceivers on SOI

• Evaluation of fixed-grid and gridless 400G, 1T and flexible (super)channel data transport with advanced DSP and monitoring built-in functions enabled by software control

SPIRIT will blend the best of photonics and electronics technologies on a common integration platform to build high performance, low cost and power efficient flexible, programmable transceivers

SPIRIT building blocks

InP high performance QUAD MZM arrays for PolMux

• Segmented-electrode dual-polarization IQ-MZMs

• 40nm CMOS drivers for low power (5-bit resolution @ 32 Gbaud)

• Total max throughput of 1 Tb/s with DP-256-QAM modulation (512 Gb/s per wavelength)

Coherent Rx arrays

90° hybrids, use of commercially available balanced PD arrays hybrids

Programmable, flexible MUX/DEMUX

• Tunable filters for spectrum slicing

• Software-controlled selective filtering using external FPGA

• Variable and up to 50 GHz bandwidth per sub-λ

• <10 GHz sub-λ granularity

FPGA for DSP and control

• Flexible and dynamic operation

• Performance monitoring functions and Quality of Service at the optical layer

Integration Platform & Packaging

• Integration of passive and active components (including arrays) on a single platform.

• Packaging
