PAT Listening Comprehension Information Sheet

PAT Listening Comprehension Stanines enable a student’s achievement to be compared against National Norms. They also enable teachers and parents

to compare student performance across cohort groups

Stanines and their associated test scores have been scaled and ‘normed’ to fit the ‘Bell Curve of Normal Distribution’

This test became available in its current form to schools in 2010.

This test assesses a student’s listening comprehension ability (understanding pieces of taped text that are pre-recorded).

It is a useful assessment tool in that it enables us to identify students who perform well in oral situations but poorly in written situations. We look for a

disparity between this test and the other tests (STAR, PAT Reading Comprehension and Reading Vocabulary). Students with a range of Stanine scores

are often students with average to above average intelligence but who may have difficulties with reading or writing. As a result, this test helps teachers

to identify students who may need targeted teaching and learning e.g. Specialised Group Work, Rainbow Reading, Extension/Remedial Programmes,

SPELD tutoring etc.

NZCER have now provided schools with an expected (National Average) rate pf progress from one year to the next as measured by scaled scores. This

enables us to track the progress of cohorts of students against both the national expectation as well as other cohorts of interest within our school.

Importantly in order for this to happen students must have undertaken the assessment twice so that the differential can be calculated and progress of

individuals and cohorts can then be analysed.

2017 PAT Listening Comprehension Achievement Summary

1. Overall performance across the school is well above National Norms. We have 74% of our students at or above Stanine 5. (Norm =60%). This performance is 14%

above the National Norm.

2. In comparison to National Norms our ‘tail’ is small. The tail being the 12% students with Stanine Result 1, 2, or 3 (Norm= 23%). This performance is 11% better

than the National Norm

3. Maori Performance is above the National Norms but is below the other cohorts measured. We have 65% of our Maori students at or above Stanine 5. (Norm

=60%). This performance is 5% above the National Norm.

4. Pacific Peoples are just below National Norms with 56% of students at or above Stanine 5 (Norm =60%) This performance is 4% below the National Norm.

It is important to note that this group contains only 9 students or 32% of the test population.

5. Gender Performance: There is no noticeable difference in performance between the genders.

6. Over Time Performance: There is consistency overtime for the ‘All’ and ‘Maori’. There a degree of fluctuation for Pacific Peoples but with only 9 students in this

cohort it is unreliable to draw to many statistical conclusions.

7. The rates of progress as measured by Scale Score show that Maori, Pacific Peoples and NZ European are very similar. There is no apparent ethnic achievement

deficit. Maori have made the most progress in 12 months (3.3patl) while Pacific Peoples made the least at (1.73patl).

8. When looking at progress as measured against a percentage of expectation (100% being 1 year’s progress in 1 calendar year) Maori marginally exceed NZ

European by 1% points

9. When looking at our Reading, Writing and Maths Target Groups the Progress Scores are excellent. (Maths 213%, Reading 152.1%, and Writing 206.6% to

expectation). This particularly interesting when one considers that every student in each group was either Well Below or Below the National Standard in

Reading/Writing/Mathematics on 31 December 2015.

Reading Target Group

a. There were 30 students who undertook both assessments in (PATs in March 2016 and March 2017). Of this group the following statements can be made

i. 18 Students have made accelerated progress

ii. 17 students have made accelerated progress at more than a rate of 150% (18 months’ progress in 12 calendar months)

iii. This improvement is also reflected in OTJs for Reading with 16 of the 30 students now reading at the National Standard (31 December 2016)

Writing Target Group

a. There were 45 students who undertook both assessments in (PATs in March 2016 and March 2017). Of this group the following statements can be made

iv. 28 Students have made accelerated progress

v. 25 students have made progress at more than a rate of 150% (18 months’ progress in 12 calendar months)

vi. This improvement is also reflected in OTJs for Writing with 14 of the 45 students now achieving at the National Standard in Writing (31 December

2016)

Maths Target Group

a. There were 45 students who undertook both assessments in (PATs in March 2016 and March 2017). Of this group the following statements can be

made

vii. 31 Students have made accelerated progress

viii. 28 students have made accelerated progress at more than a rate of 150% (18 months’ progress in 12 calendar months)

ix. This improvement is also reflected in OTJs for Mathematics with 14 of the 45 students now achieving the National Standard in Maths (31 December

2016)
