Founded in 1986, Aqua began operations as a small scale plant hire business. Through excellent customer service, business acumen and strategic acquisitions, the Aqua Group stands today as one of South Africa’s largest plant hire companies. This has allowed Aqua to successfully complete major infrastructure and construction contracts throughout Southern Africa.

With its headquarters in Durban and offices in major centres of South Africa, the Aqua Group has the infrastructure, capacity and skills to provide a wide range of services ranging from short term plant hire to large scale infrastructure projects.

A fleet of more than a thousand plant and specialised vehicles plus a staff complement of one thousand five hundred, including engineers, maintenance technicians, project managers and operators makes the Aqua Group one of the largest players in this industry.

Over the years, the Aqua Group has expanded its operations to include a Roads Division, responsible for creating and maintaining thousands of kilometres of highway and other road surfaces. In addition, the company can also supply fleet solutions, bulk handling and waste management services to private and public companies.

One aspect of the Aqua Group that has not changed is its focus on customer service and delivery. It is this quality which allowed Aqua to grow into a diversified group of companies. Delivering an excellent service, characterised by reliability and value for money, is the cornerstone of every aspect of our business.

Aqua Water Tankers

Aqua is a member of the Contractors Plant Hire Association (CPHA). Aqua beganoperations as a supplier of water tankers and this remains an important division of the company. One third of Aqua’s fleet comprises of specialised water tankers, making it thelargestwatertankerfleetintheSouthernHemisphere.Ourtankersaredesignedto deliver water for domestic and industrial use wherever needed; their modified design means that they are robust enough to traverse any terrain. In addition, they feature multiple distribution points allowing for faster, more effective delivery.

Tankersrangingfrom5000litresto30000litrecapacityareavailable.Ourdomesticwater tankers are specially cleaned and treated before and after each use, ensuring thatthewaterprovidedis100%safeandfreefromanycontaminants.

Aqua has been instrumental in providing much needed fresh water supplies to communities affected by cholera contamination, thus helping to prevent the spread ofthispotentiallyfataldisease.AquaTransportandPlantHire–RoadRehabilitationdivisionstarted in2006. In2010AquapurchasedSanyatiRoads (Pty) Ltd.asanongoingconcern.SanyatiRoadshasbeeninvolvedintheasphaltindustryfrom2003and has a proven track record as a leading ABE.

The amalgamation of the existing technological skill and plant assets of Sanyati coupled with the technological skill, plant assets and financial / managerial ability ofAquaTransportandPlantHirehasresulted in theformationofacompetentandviable ABE asphalt manufacturing and surfacing company branded as the Aqua Road Rehabilitation Division.

During the take-over and restructuring process, the new management invested heavily into the refurbishment of all existing plant and machinery together with systematic replacement of redundant plant with modernised equipment.

Aqua operates its own in-house road surfacing operation, giving control over plant availability, cost and schedules. The team, comprises of those responsible for the asphalt manufacturing supported by a fully equipped asphalt laboratory, surfacing teams supported by a fully equipped and staffed workshop and a technically competent and committed management team to provide our clients a superior level of quality and service.

In addition, Road Rehabilitation Division also has at it disposal, Mobile Asphalt Plant that is capable of manufacturing premix on site on large projects where product is not readily available.

Milling and Asphalt

Aqua supplies and operates specialised plant for efficient milling, recycling and asphalting. Cold milling machines efficiently strip and remove damaged paving. The possible applications range from excavation of complete carriageway structures through to “Mill and Patch” to correct existing defective surfaces, using a range of Wirtgen Milling machines.

In conjunction with our Milling machines, Aqua also have a diverse range of asphalt paving equipment ranging from compact machines to larger machines where full width paving may be required.

Services include road, dual carriageway, road surfacing, re-surfacing and road maintenance.

The Aqua Group supplies flexible vehicle leasing and rental services to its clients. We supply replacement vehicles in case of breakdown, allowing you to continue to deliver to your clients without having to worry about managing vehicles.

Customised Solutions

We supply and fit vehicles to suit our clients needs and will install tracking devices, fuel monitoring or any other modifications required. For freedom of use combined with the peace of mind of a comprehensive support team, it makes sense to outsource the management and maintenance of fleet.

Regular Maintenance Management

Regular maintenance of vehicles can be built into your contract to ensure maximum performance and safety. This also reduces the risk of break down.

Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring Systems

If required, Aqua will fit tracking devices to vehicles in line with our client’s requirements. In this way, operation of the vehicle can be recorded, detailing when and where a vehicle was started, who the driver was, where the vehicle drove and finally where the vehicle was switched off. This is an important safety feature and also allows our clients to ensure that there is no abuse of company vehicles.

Breakdown Management

In the event of a breakdown, Aqua Fleet Services will respond and either perform repairs at the roadside or tow the vehicle to the nearest workshop for repairs. Replacement vehicles can be offered for the duration of the repair.

Gautrain Project – Gauteng

Aqua became involved in the Gautrain project in the initial planning phase, offering their expertadviceonthetypeandquantityofequipmentrequiredtotransportthe750,000cubicmetresofconcreterequiredfortheproject.Fourteenconcretemixers(ReadyMixTrucks)werepurchasedbyAqua,inadditiontotheirexistingplantwhichwasusedtoclear the site and perform layer works.

The Aqua Group has been privileged to have been involved in some of South Africa’s most iconic projects.

Power Plant Projects - Eskom

Medupi - Lephalale

Nature of project: A new Eskom coal powered power plant, comprising of 6 units rated in total at 4 788 MW installed capacity.


Completion date: 2012

The Aqua Group has been instrumental in the Medupi Power Plant project, where its versatility and capacity has been demonstrated by the number and types of plant beingemployed.Over100piecesofmachineryhavebeenused,includingconcretemixers, graders, heavy trucks, fuel bowsers and tractors. As with all major projects, Aqua maintains a fully functional workshop and project office on site to ensure that all machineryiskeptin100%workingorderforthedurationoftheconstruction.

Kusile Power Plant Project - Mpumulanga

Nature of project: A new Eskom coal powered power plant, consisting of six units with atotalcapacityof4800MW.


Completion date: 2015

Aqua plant on site: 100piecesofequipmentrangingfromfuelbowserstotractors.

With a successful track record at the Medupi Power Plant, Aqua was the logical choice to provide services to the Kusile project. Impressed with the depth of their offering and commitment to quality, Aqua’s bid was accepted by Roshcon, the construction division of Eskom. As with Medupi, Aqua is providing a wide range of services to the project, operating out of fully equipped site offices.

Transnet New Multi Product Pipeline (NMPP) – Durban to Pretoria

Nature of project:700kmofundergroundfuelandgaspipelinefromDurbantoGautengas well as the inland network.

Duration: 3 years 6 months

Completion date: end2012

Aqua plant on site: 130piecesofplantincludingspecialisttrucksandabnormalloadtrailers for the transport of pipe.

For the pipeline project, Aqua were required to overcome the logistical challenge of transporting large sections of pipeline across virgin terrain. Their experience of transporting water to remote rural areas proved invaluable. Aqua designed and built 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 off road trucks capable of managing both the load and the uneven surfaces. In addition, tracked bowsers were designed and built to transport fuel to the sites.


Road Infrastructure

As part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, Aqua has contributed to the upgrade of 185 kilometres of freeway in the first phase alone. A further 376 kilometres of improvement is planned and Aqua will be ready to play their part.

In KZN, Aqua has been involved in creating new road infrastructure as well asmaintaining and repairing surfaces for the major municipalities for many years. Their abilitytorapidlymobilisewasdemonstratedduringthefloodsofSeptember2008whichseriouslydamagedmanyroadsintheHibiscusCoastarea.Knowingtheimportanceof tourism to the region, Aqua ensured that repairs were completed before the start of the summer season on 1st December.

In the sphere of end to end road construction, Aqua’s track record is impressive and includes;

• A 10 million rand project to supply road infrastructure to the Coega IndustrialDevelopmentZoneintheEasternCape.

• A 32million rand project to create three new roads in Pietermaritzburg for theMsunduzi Municipality
