CONSULTING

EXPERIENCE

Have consulted for government departments, private developers and local authorities on a number of issues, for example, veld burning and loss of crops, dune management, nature reserve design and management, new developments and industries. Involved with important national and international environmental impact assessments such as proposed dune mining in the St Lucia region where I was appointed consulting ecologist. Formed an environmental group in 1989 with Dr.Ted Avis and Mr Peter Jackson - Coastal and Environmental Services - to carry out these studies. In 1997 this became a separate company with Dr Avis and I as directors. Presently it is one of the strongest environmental companies in the Eastern Cape with contracts in the Eastern Cape, greater southern Africa, Mozambique, Malawi and also active in other parts of Africa.

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

Taxonomy: My PhD research was in numerical taxonomy and although I have maintained an interest in this direction, the same techniques are used in quantitative ecology.

Flora of Albany and Bathurst: An update of a 1960's checklist, which will include brief species descriptions and illustrations of some species is in progress.

Ecology and Applied Ecology: Essentially my ecological research is applied, but it has generally been associated with particular problems requiring investigation. Consequently funding has been from CSIR Terrestrial Programmes or other bodies where specific problems have been studied.

Reclamation of derelict or unstable areas: 1. Mine dumps of the Witwatersrand: A research programme initiated in co-operation with the Chamber of Mines. 2. Spoil heaps of the Boro River, Okavango: studies of this region were carried out in association with earlier researchers from the University of Witwatersrand. 3 Stabilization of coastal drift sands: Ongoing research conducted in association with local authorities, National Research Institute for Oceanography, CSIR and Directorate of Forestry. 4. Stabilisation of estuarine river banks: In association with the Port Alfred Municipality. 5. Rehabilitation of tailings after dredge-mining: Research undertaken in conjunction with Richards Bay Minerals on dune sands in the Richard’s Bay region, Natal..

Terrestrial Programmes of FRD, CSIR: 1. Savanna Ecosystem Project: As one of the first researchers in Nylsvlei. I have an ongoing research project in the savanna. 2. Conservation: FRD projects on rare and endangered communities of the Eastern Cape. 3. Karoo Biome Project: Research programme commenced in 1987. I have also contributed to annual meetings 4. Fynbos and Forest Biome Projects: Contributed at annual meetings.

Coastal Zone Management: Ecological coastal research, both pure and applied is my major field of interest at present. Numerous studies have been made of vegetation on

dunes and problems generally associated with dune movement and inappropriate coastal planning. Carried out for and funded by Municipalities of Port Elizabeth, East London, the National Botanic Gardens, Kirstenbosch and Rhodes University Council. I have also working with the Directorate of Forestry, EMATEK-CSIR, and Algoa Regional Services

Professor Lubke obtained funding from EU - ecosystem projects and co-operated with colleagues in the UK, The Netherlands and Botswana on potential invasive grass species on dune systems. This project looked specifically at the potential of Ammophila arenaria (marram grass) as a potential invader of the Cape dune systems.

Conservation and Conservation Education 1. Nature Reserves and vegetation classification: Projects on a number of eastern Cape nature reserves have been carried out in association with the Cape Department of Nature and Environmental Conservation and Algoa Regional Services Council. Full FRD support on Landcover programmes for 1986-1987. Other funding from Algoa Regional Services Council. 2. Oribi Conservation: Project initiated on conservation of Oribi in the Eastern Cape in 1987 and 1988. 3. A Field Guide to the Eastern Cape Coast: A major educational project of the Grahamstown Centre of the Wildlife Society which was funded by subscribers and sponsors. This book of 384 pages was published in 1988 and edited by myself, Professor M N Bruton and Dr F W Gess and has contributions by about 20 authors. The editors and authors of this book were awarded the Cape Times Centenary Medal for conservation in the category, Group Professional. A second enlarged edition of this book was published in 1998 and edited by myself and Irene de Moor - A Field Guide to the Eastern and Southern Cape Coasts.

Educational and Popular Books Successful Biology 8, 9 & 10: I am a major contributing author to three Oxford University Publishers high school biology textbooks. Vegetation of Southern Africa. The editors , Prof Richard Cowling and Dr. David Richardson, invited me to be senior author of the chapter on coastal vegetation. This book is to be produced next year by Cambridge University Press. 3.Eco-diversity in South Africa: The text of the coastal region is being produced of this popular "coffee-table" type book.
