UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA - RESEARCH

Looking into the starting of the Utopia/Dystopia brief the research that took part such as mood boards and quick sketches allowed me to create a visual identity of what kind of environment as a group we were going to do. After being the first to email in we got the topic of ‘Utopia’. After discussing the topic of Utopia it was deemed to us as a perfect environment in which we created a studio based around the furniture in the room and added work that I created such as the ‘Work Hard, Play Harder’ letterpress designs.

As a group we challenged the brief down to the fact that it was meant to be created out of paper but we felt like to give it real semantic value and meaning that we wanted to put a real interpretation on our environment setting in which is displayed through photos on the right hand page.

UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA - MANIFESTO

The manifesto was a true reflection on what we deemed as our perfect Utopian society. The society didn’t have any rules and was free to interpretation such as eras as 1960 and 1980 in which Hippies and Punks created freedom of choice and bewildered us with a more free society.

What is our Utopia about? Is it a free sense of society with a no holds boundary or is it something to just chill and relax in. This is up to you as an individual to sense the freedom in which we have provided throughout our establishment. The creative drive forwards us into a design mode in which enables viewers to ask the question: what is Utopia?

However, we have deemed to answer that in a much more relaxed and chilled setting in which individuals such as yourselves can chill, relax and using our tagline ‘work hard, play harder’ progress this into a development of ideas and concepts.

Our environment is studio-like in which has been set up as sofas and boards in which individuals can not only write on but also progress and develop their own individual concepts if they wish.

Since our environment is much more hippy like compared to other Utopia’s it enables us to give a fresh and diverse way of seeing and knowing things.

Using colour was important to use and will be something that has always developed not only our understanding but your understanding if you wish to join our society, we call it abstract design which is something individuals such as ourselves show our creative side into design and will always work in a studio set environment.

The colours used in the environment are bold and brash which are meant to show different personalities and allow us to think that we have followed the concept of: Work Hard Play Harder.

Our environment rules are this:

WORK HARD, PLAY HARDER

If these rules are broken then you will not be authorised to join our society and will not be able to progress into a chilled a relaxed environment and will be sent to Dystopia instead of our perfect Utopia.

UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA - EXPERIMENTING

As deemed in our manifesto and our society the whole point of our Utopia was it to be as experimental and free as we wished and this is why I decided to hire out a macro lens from the media store and experiment with colour for the posters that we had to create.

This aided me to use different techniques and experiment more than usual to create a mixed variety of colours in which would be reflected through the medium of a poster.

What is Utopia?

UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA - POSTER DESIGNS

Keeping the strap line that was used in the studio environment of ‘Work Hard, Play Harder’ allowed me to keep in focus of the main goal of creating a Utopian poster. However, challenging and defying the brief was the most important part as our society was not deemed by rules and was free to explore that it had to be completely different and unique to what the main theme of ‘propaganda’ would be.

Even though, at first the theme was followed in which figure one above shows that as it references the style which was done in comparison to the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ posters. However, challenging the brief allowed me to create an eye catching and visual graphic which is shown on the right hand side as it is my final idea.

LIGHTBULB PACKAGING - RESEARCH

Starting research on the lightbulb packaging allowed me to visit local stores such as Next and B&Q to understand how packaging design works from colours to how eco-friendly a box was meant to be. Taking photos in store of a variety of different boxes allowed me to see a comparison to lower quality products to more higher quality products.

LIGHTBULB PACKAGING - TESTING

Testing out lightbulb packaging with designs and a lightbulb was an interesting process which cannot be ignored during this brief. The testing of the lightbulb allowed me to get a feel of what was the intention to design a packaging product and getting to grips with the product that was available to me.

Using corrugated card as shown above allowed me to look at how a box is created normally in industry and this was found out by the research done earlier when visiting the local stores and exploring packaging design for a lightbulb.

LIGHTBULB PACKAGING - IDEAS

The intention to create packaging was hard and a process in which enabled me to sketch out ideas and designs that came to mind. There was a wide variety of choice of ideas which can be explored over these two pages but after the second part of the brief and looking into the question of ‘how does packaging culturally affect us?’ made me discover the topic of what is their to offer disabled individuals on the current market.

LIGHTBULB PACKAGING - FINAL IDEAS

Designing a lightbulb which culturally affected me was an important piece as shown above it not only shows a variety of design substance but leads us to debate the question of why is braille such an importance on the design and which then leads us on to the debate that is it clever to create a piece that partial sight individuals can use or is it ludicrous design?

Shamefully, only prototypes on the computer were made but shows a clear understanding of how the designs would look and work in a shop environment down to the bold colours and the clear and simple graphics that are displayed on the box. The prototypes were made after looking at numerous designs.

WHISKY BRIEF - RESEARCH

The whisky brief was an important one to focus on with research as we are trying to lead a product to an international market and what is better than looking at current products that are available on the market to us. Looking at these products allowed me to figure out ideas and concepts in which were incorporated into sketches and ideas.

After looking at current products on the market, sketching ideas of what could be created for this market was important to get an understanding of how we as a group would progress with the development of a whisky product.

WHISKY BRIEF - FINAL IDEAS

To the left, were the final ideas in which were created by myself for the whisky project. The designs are not only simplistic and effective but work on a scale in which allows us as a audience to not only connect with this product down to the identity of the product and how it would appeal to the whisky market.

MAGAZINE BRIEF - RESEARCH

While getting debriefed about this brief, the best way for me to process the amount of information that we were getting was to sketch all ideas and concepts right away to get a better understanding of the brief and look into different methods.

On the next page, an email was sent to one of the art directors of Eye Magazine who responded with a kind message and gave me the actual measurements of Eye Magazine and also a spread from the issue that was explored by myself in the UCA library.

MAGAZINE BRIEF - IDEAS AND FINAL IDEA

After looking into all the research that was collected for the brief down to the short amount of time that was offered for the brief using the strategy learnt in the first semester of ‘limitations’ allowed me to pick the idea of creating an 80th issue for eye magazine which was to incorporate only a black background with a simple 80 done by using a variety of colours which made up the numbers.

However, when looking on illustrator at the final piece the 8 did not work correctly so then had to be changed to a 9 which in counts on the next page as the final idea and the ‘90th’ issue for Eye magazine.

VAUGHAN OLIVER BRIEFING

Vaughan Oliver’s speech was one of the highlights of the year for me down to the inspiration in which he puts through his work and what an incredible chance to work with somebody with such knowledge in the field of graphic design. Taking note of his lecture, the quick sketches were done so work that stood out for me could be visualised and useful to me later on for the ‘naval grazing’ brief.

NAVAL GRAZING - IDEAS

Getting stuck into the brief enabled me to progress with it quite quick after having the initial chat with Brian and picking the theme of ‘Roadkill’ which was commonly known as something that can also be known as shock graphics in which was completely different and out there as an idea and a concept for a zine. However, adding it with recipes made it even more bizarre and whacky than usual.

Further research into shock horror graphics enabled me to grasp the idea of what something would look like also.

NAVAL GRAZING - RESEARCH

After being told in my critique to look at shock graphics and masterminds such as the chapman brothers enabled me to get a feel of what the zine of ‘Roadkill’ should look like. As shown on this page the chapman brothers use a variety of shock tactics in their work to not only get a response but to portray a message in which is an open interpretation to us as a viewer.

NAVAL GRAZING - THE ZINE ‘ROADKILL’

After finally progressing through many ideas and concepts the final idea of the zine was created! The idea of the roadkill bewildered many individuals during the critique as it used shock graphics such as The Chapman Brothers but enabled me to get a better understanding of how individuals react with such grotesque images.

The photographs used in the zine were a friends of mine who allowed me permission to use their imagery in which also allowed me to manipulate it with scratches in the eyes of the animals and a red filter to make it look much more darker and to add my own personal touch on the work which was picked up as an emotive piece in which was the main idea for the zine.

BEHAVIOUR - RESEARCH

The behaviour research was extension from looking at different images to interviews from the NHS website which enabled me to look at the behaviour of ‘psychosis’ which usually means an individual or a group who makes plans to kill or hurt themselves.

After extending the research, highlighting key points in further sketches developments allowed me to get right into what Psychosis really is.

BEHAVIOUR - IDEAS AND CONCEPTS

Looking into ideas and concepts for the behaviour of ‘Psychosis’ was important and underlined the main concepts in which were limited down to four, these were: hallucinations, delusion, confusion of thought and lack of insight.

After looking at these concepts and the ideas processed by a sketchbook means allowed me to visualise two ideas which were under the headings of delusion and confusion of thought.

For delusion, the main theme was to write on receipts which were brought by myself and get into the state of mind that the individual with the deluded behaviour would have. Sometimes, we ask ourselves questions when we already know the answer but they make us feel better if we still ask them and this was apparent on idea one.

However, on idea two looking more into the drug related side and street names allowed me to create some cards which can be explained in more further detail on the next pages.

BEHAVIOUR - IDEA ONE

As discussed earlier, the idea of this piece was to get into the state of mind of a deluded person and ask questions in which they might ask themselves. This allowed me to write on receipts in which had meaning to me as they were items in which were either brought or borrowed and the questions were a responsive way in what was thought while doing so.

The bold and block typography was hand-drawn but gives an effect of placement within the image.

BEHAVIOUR - IDEA TWO

As discussed earlier, the best way for me to progress into a confusion of thought was through cards. Cards are usually used to either give out to people to help them remember and are keenly used throughout popular games also.

The cards referenced street names of drugs which were explored earlier in the initial idea process and allowed me to create quick and snappy designs in which were done on illustrator to give a much more slicker finish and a design aesthetic.

EVALUATION - PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION

During the Production & Consumption unit at UCA Epsom, I have learnt alot from progressing from the first semester to the second. I personally felt more in control with how the work wanted to look like and was much more positive with ideas and concepts to just final design work which then made me embark on a journey instead of just designs on a page. Taking hold of all the briefs were exciting as I tried my hardest not to just follow them but challenge them and try my best to make them look visually good but also developed concepts and ideas through sketches in my sketchbook which I never held last semester.

The briefs such as Utopia, Behaviour & Naval Grazing allowed me to not only have fun with the briefs but push as much work as I possibly could to show a more developed portfolio this time around compared to last. My favourite brief out of all of them was both Naval Grazing and Behaviour down to the fact that it enabled me to push clear concepts and use sketches to plan work which was to be created on a computer but then also allowed me to design something that I was not only happy with, but something that was unique to my individual self.

My time management skills have got alot better since my last and shows within the work that is completed. Although, my favourite thing i’ve learnt over the semester is setting out my work by using grids and character/paragraph styles which have enabled me to improve my layout and allowed me to progress with a much higher finish to my work.

Looking through the portfolio, my strengths this time which were lacking last time were detailed research of ideas of how did you get to one place? Does it need pushing because you weren’t as motivated? These are all good questions that I asked myself during this semester and hopefully shown that I’ve followed through with them.

The best part of this course enabled me to develop and not only challenge concepts but to come up with new and exciting ideas, which has made me a much more rounded individual within graphic design. Overall, I believe that this portfolio is a much stronger effort than last semester and that I’ve learnt from my mistakes and will take forward this much more successful and positive attitude with the work I will produce in the forthcoming years.
