The wide range of products of Smithers-Oasis

OASIS® Floral Foam does not only exists in several shapes and sizes, but also in several bases:

Because they are so versatile, products with a plastic base such as our OASIS® NAYLOR BASE® Products, have been a firm part of our range for many years and most come with a small plastic edge. The plastic base is robust and durable, and gives the arrangement a firm hold. It also serves as a water reservoir enabling preparatory work in advance.

TIP: In case of a low edge on the plastic base, the flower stems should be inserted deep into the floral foam, to guarantee a certain water supply. At the same time, the water level in the plastic base should be as high as possible. The plastic bases can also be covered with OASIS® Easy Color Spray.

The hard foam base is a favorable alternative for plastic and ideally used where no border is needed for the design as it can easily be covered with foliage. The base is water-repellent, stable and gives the composition the neces-sary hold. Both OASIS® FOAM FRAMES, as well as OASIS® ECOBASE® Products are equipped with this base.

Index

The recycled carton base is usually found within the Sympathy range of all OASIS® BIOLIT® Products. It is made out of papier-mâché and is therefore environmentally friendly. The structure of this base gives arrangements the needed hold. Products that include this base can be used in cemeteries without a problem. They are also com-postable when shredded.

When it has to be environmental friendly and very strong, OASIS® BIOLINE® or OASIS® bioFLOR Products - equipped with a wooden base - will be most suited. Large and heavy products need a very high stability, this need is met by this wooden base. Also these products are compostable when shredded.

TIP: If you like to change the color of the wood, this can be easily done with OASIS® Easy Color Spray.

OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife

OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife is one of the most favourite working aids of florists worldwide. Cut flowers stay fresh for

as long or even longer compared to flowers in a vase and it also maximises the flower life of many flower varieties.

Not every flower is the same, which is why Smithers-Oasis offers several densities, suitable for each flower type. All of

them feature the following characteristics, turning OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife into a high quality product.

R It has a very fine, constant and compact structure of thin walled water-absorbing microcells. These microcells

guarantee a quick and even water absorption and water retention whilst minimising the water drainage.

R It absorbs over 95 % of its volume in water. The absorption time of a brick is only 90 seconds!

R It keeps flowers fresh for as long or even longer than flowers in a vase

R It prevents premature wilting of the petals.

R It stops premature bent neck

R It stops premature yellowing and dropping of the petals

R It prevents premature stem burn

R It maximises flower life of many flower varieties

Brick shapes with a wooden baseThe OASIS® BIOLINE® Deco Plate has a flat wide base with a hold for fixing. The

wire cage gives additional hold.

TIP: With the holes in the wooden plate, the arrangement can be easily be fixed

in the ground with a pin that will also hold during less ideal weather circumstances.

When the Deco Plate is used as a coffin decoration, it can be easily fixed with nails

or screws.

Raquettes with a plastic baseEspecially for stage decoration placed in spotlights. The OASIS® Raquette is

Please note: don't remove the foil! The flower stems are being inserted through the

foil into the floral foam. This gives flowers additional hold, reduces the loss of water

gements for virtually every occasion. In the 3cm thick foam, flowers with short

The Easy-Click-System

Some OASIS® ECObase® Hearts and the OASIS® ECObase® Cross have a unique

similarity: the Easy-Click-System.

At the bottom of these products click-locks are embedded. In these click-locks

both wooden legs as well as suction cups (ECObase Vacufix) can be easily and

securely connected. This way a heart, equipped with this system, can be used in

many ways: for wedding floristry, funeral floristry or for room and table decoration.

This avoids a double stock keeping. Please note once the application method is

chosen, switching between the wooden legs and suction cups is no longer possible.

It's that simple:

Push the wooden legs with the small side in the click-lock.

Due to the different lengths of wooden legs (always 1 short and 2 long per pack)

the finished arrangement is positioned at an angle. The arranged surface therefore

Should the suction cups be hard to insert, the tips can be lightly sprayed with

cup up with the finger tip. Like this air can enter into the vacuum space, and the

suction cup will come off the surface.

TIP: The surface has to be clean, dry and oil-free because otherwise the holding

power of the suction cup cannot be guaranteed. Also a newly polished car varnish

can reduce the holding power. The polish should be taken off with warm water,

Bouquet holdersSmithers-Oasis offers several bouquet holders for every occasion. Please pay attention to the

following points:

• Long stems need to have additional support and be anchored to the plastic holder base with wire.

• Whilst arranging the design, always make sure the stem ends are inserted deep enough in the

floral foam to provide them with the water they need.

• Spray the finished bouquet with OASIS® Clear Life or Floralife® Finishing Touch. They inhibit

evaporation and lead to a long lasting freshness. When using OASIS® Clear Life, always make

sure to spray the bouquet from a distance of approximately 30 cm, to avoid staining the flower

leaves.

Fixing aidsOASIS® Fix

Waterproof, very strong adhesive fix tack. Ideal to fix floral foam in containers or

candles to floral foam by means of Pinholders or Pini-Extra.

TIP: Shape the desired quantity (approximately 3 cm is often sufficient) to a

small sphere and push it to the bottom of the Pinholder or Pini-Extra. Then heat it

up (eg. using a lighter), which increases the adhesive power. When you would like

to fix floral foam to a container with OASIS® Fix, always make sure the container is

dry and clean. In case you would like to attach candles to floral foam, the candles

have to be pre-treated: candles have an invisible layer, at the same time a colour

layer. This layer should be taken off, because otherwise optimal fix cannot be

guaranteed.

ATTENTION: Do not apply on car lacquer! Store at room temperature. The

adhesive fix tack can be easily taken off from ceramics with hot water.

Dissolvent free floral glue, odourless and humidity resistant, with a long binding

The final hardening of the glue takes place with a delay and depends on the

quantity of the materials, surface and temperature. This offers the possibility to do

corrections even after applying the glue.

TIP: The objects have to be dustproof and agent free, dry and carryable. Glue

that isn't hardened yet can be taken off with water.

The products have to be stored frost free and can be used in a temperature

between 5° C and 40° C.

Products with a suction cup

Several OASIS® Products are already equipped with a suction cup or can be equipped with suction cups. This way the finished arrangements can be quickly and easily attached to all slippery surfaces.

Please pay attention to the following guidelines when using these products:

• After attaching the suction cup, please clean and dry the suction part of the suction cup.

• Ensure the reserved place, on which the arrangement will be placed, is also clean, dry and greaseproof, because otherwise the grip of the suction cup cannot be guaranteed.

• Even a newly polished car can reduce the grip of the suction cup. In this case the polish in the desired area should be removed carefully with hot water, a detergent and chamois leather.

• In case you would like to remove the arrangement, it is helpful to lift up the border of the suction cup with the tip of your fingers. This way air can float under the suction cup and it will loosen up from the base.

• Pay attention not to use the suction cup more than 3 times.

• We recommend not to use the suction cups on matte, post-lacquered or foiled surfaces. We accept no responsibility for cups attached to these surfaces.

Products with a foldable stand and /or segmentation lines

Foldable standSome OASIS® Hearts, wreaths and special shapes are equipped with a foldable stand. Often these are included with large products – and are used in sympathy or wedding floristry, or are being used for representative purposes (eg. shop window decoration, etc.).

This foldable stand is made out of strong wood and is securely attached to the product base. It can be easily fol-ded open and closed again. For the presentation of the product, the stand is folded open, for a flat transportation it should be closed.

Segmentation lines Large and heavy OASIS® Products are produced with "segmentation lines", a specialty being introduced by Smithers-Oasis. These are small separations in the floral foam that interrupt the water column to minimize the water drainage. This prevents the upper section of the product from drying out due to drainage.

Nevertheless it is important to pay attention to the following: While arranging, the product has to be placed horizontally on the working surface. The product will let some water escape from the floral foam when flower stems are inserted. For this reason the finished arrangement has to be placed upright for a short amount of time, before it is delivered at the final location. This way the water drained by the flower stems can be released and puddles of water at the final location can be avoided.

OASIS® RAINBOW® FOAM

• OASIS® RAINBOW® Foam is colourfast. Once soaked, the colour is a little darker and thus more intense.

• It should not be soaked together with regular floral foam, because under certain circumstances the green residue from the floral foam can be absorbed and it will dirty the OASIS® RAINBOW® Foam.

• Because of its special density, its water absorbing capability and drainage is slightly less compared to the known floral foam. For this reason, flower stems should be inserted at least to the height of the water level in the foam to provide enough water. It is recommended to frequently re-water the arrangement.

• When flowers with soft or thin stems are being used, it may be helpful to pre-insert the foam with a wooden stick to create a hole, to avoid the stem from being damaged.

• To guarantee a correct PH value and to nourish the cut flowers, you should add cut flower food (Floralife® Cut Flower Food) to the water.

• Small dirty spots as well as irregularities can be easily disguised when the foam is in a dry condition with a piece of OASIS® RAINBOW® Foam of the same colour.

FLORALIFE® Cut Flower Food

The colour systemCustomers would like to have flowers that last as long as possible. The Floralife® 5 Steps of Fresh quality products will help to fulfil this wish. This will only work however when the flower food is being correctly dosed, and attention to hygiene is being paid whilst working.

Thanks to a simple system it is easy to the find the required product:

• Blue colour on the label + number 100 in the product name = a product for pretreatment and for hydration

• Yellow colour on the label + number 200 in the product name = Product for storage and transport

• Red colour on the label + number 300 in the product name = Product to provide nourishment.

Optimal dosage of Floralife® Cut Flower Food

Under dosing will lead to a loss of quality of the cut flowers. Over dosage doesn't give an optimal outcome and re-sults in unnecessary spending. Correctly dosed flower food reduces the waste of flowers and reduces the costs..

For powder counts:• 3,5 g for 350 ml water• 5 g for 0,5 l water • 10 g for 1 l water For liquids counts:• 5 ml for 0,5 l water• 10 ml for 1 l waterBut for the highly concentrated Floralife® ULTRA 200 Clear counts• 5 ml for 1 l water• 10 ml for 2 l water

TIPS:• After the delivery in the flower shop, the flowers have to be recut, dipped into Floralife® Quick Dip and placed immediately into a Floralife® Flower Food solution. • Water with Floralife® Cut Flower Food doesn't have to be changed on a daily base. It is sufficient to fill up the base with the correctly dosed mixed solution when needed. eg. in the shop. As a rule of thumb: when the water visually isn't drinkable anymore, the water should be replaced. • Instead of making a separate mixed Floralife® Cut Flower Food solution for every individual vase, it is recommended to make a large quantity, to fill up all the individual vases. This will save you a lot of time! To make the mixed solution you can use a regular 10l watering can (for 10L water you need 100g or 100ml Floralife® Cut Flower Food.)• Water mixed up with a Floralife(r) solution should not be used in a metal or lead vase. If you will continue to use metal vases in the flower shop, plastic or glass inserts should be used.

TIPS:• Place the floral foam on the water. Do not pour water on top of the floral foam brick!• Change the water regularly and clean the tank carefully with Floralife® Cleaner, to avoid the bacterial growth in the tank.• Never push the brick under water or turn it around in water!

1. Use the “float soak” method andplace the OASIS® Floral Foam brick (or any portion of it) onto the top of fresh water.

2. A container which can hold water that is double the depth of a brick is ideal, as it allows the water to circu-late freely around and into the brick.

3. Let the OASIS® Floral Foam ab-sorb the water until it rests at the surface or sinks to the bottom of the soaking container.

3. Be patient! Wait until all bricks arefully soaked before removing as ripples in the water can ride over the bricks and cause dry spots.

Soaking OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife:

Use the “float soak” method: place the OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife (branded logo side up) on the water level and let it soak. This way the air inside the brick will be replaced fully with water.

Never push the OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife under the water. Air will be trapped inside the foam resulting in dry spots that will not allow flower stems to take up water.Do not stack bricks one on top of the other during the soaking procedure, also avoid side contact when placing them next to each other as this could result in dry spots on the inside of the foam.

The time for a complete saturation varies depending on the size, shape and/or density of the OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife. (saturation time for a float soaked brick of OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife: approx. 90 sec.)

Special shapes and bases require a special soaking method. In general it is important to consider the following rules:

• Use a container that is large enough to soak the shape both width and depth.

• Use a technique that enables the air inside the foam to leave and be replaced with water.

Floral Foam with a plastic-, hard foam, wooden or recycled carton base

Special attention should be paid to all OASIS® floral bases with a plastic, hard foam, wooden or recycled carton base to ensure the floral foam is fully soaked on the base, especially when there is a higher plastic edge surroun-ding the shape.

These bases should not be placed horizontally on the water level as the air cannot escape meaning the floral foam will not soaking correctly which results in dry spots.

In those circumstances it is better to soak the shape in a vertical position, guiding it slowly into the water. (Keep hold of the shape as it will get heavy when soaked).

In some cases it is not possible to use a big container because of a lack of space. For those circumstances we advise the following:

Place long shapes (OASIS® Raquettes) in a long, low rectangular container (Balcony tray), filling it up regularly with a new solution when necessary.

For large round shapes (OASIS® Wreaths) a long, (low) container is best. Slowly rotate the shape in the wa-ter and continue this procedure until the entire wreath is soaked. Fill it up with a new mixed solution when necessary.

Place special, large shapes (OASIS® Titan Heart) with the plastic, wooden, hard foam, recycled carton base flat on the floor and water these with a watering can. Always start in a corner and very slowly move to the other side of the floral base, allowing enough time for water to be absorbed. (Moving too fast will result in dry spots.).

Using OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife:

• When stacking wet bricks one on top of the other, always place a plastic film, aluminium paper or a slice of OASIS® SEC foam between each layer to avoid the upper bricks from draining into the lower ones.

• Never insert a stem into an existing hole in the floral foam, as the cell structure of the floral foam is damaged in this place. This will cause the flower not being able to take water.

• Always insert the flower stem sufficiently deep in the floral foam.

• Rings placed on the floor keep their water longer then hanging rings. (Hanging rings need to be re-watered and should be placed horizontally during the night.).

Storing OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife:

• OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife can be stored at room temperature, directly away from sun light. If the floral foam has suffered from direct sunlight, a light discoloration can occur but this does not have an influence on the capillary characteristics of the OASIS® Floral Foam Maxlife.

• Avoid treating the floral foam in a rough way as this will damage the cell structure which will keep the flower stems from taking up water.

• Avoid extreme heat and humidity as these factors can reduce the water uptake and a cause a higher drainage in some cases.

V.L. Smithers

Vernon Lewis (V.L.) Smithers was born on July 22, 1890. His career, and eventual path to the floral industry, began in the 1930’s, when he was the owner and operator of V.L. Smithers Laboratories, an independent testing laboratory for the tire and battery industries in Akron, Ohio. Sometime after this, V.L.
