Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What a deep gift it is to be your new Lead Pastor. Since the vote, people now are stopping me and asking a very commonquestion: What is it like to be back?

On the Sunday that the congregation voted to call me as Lead, I felt the power of the Holy Spirit like noother time in my life. It was truly a powerful, life-changing experience. It is the sort of thing that almostis betrayed by attempting to put words on it. But, being a pastor, I will try.

I believe strongly that the vote on July 27 was not only a vote for Mike Carlson. I believe deep in mybones that it was a vote, an acknowledgement, a resounding call for the mission of Jesus Christ in theworld. It was a call from the people to keep our focus on Christ and his Kingdom come. It was a votefor the mission of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church to continue to Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ,Serve!

I have become convinced that our call as a church is a deep summons from God to tell the story ofJesus, to live the story of Jesus in such compelling ways that we see lives changed.

There is a deep hunger in the hearts of people to be connected to God. The vote to call me as Lead Pastor was a vote for allof us to dig deep and do the work of the Gospel.

So to respond to the question how it feel to be back: It feels like coming home... Home to brothers and sisters committed todoing the work of the Gospel, coming home to Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve!

Prayer Shawl MinistryA tangible evidence of prayer. We have a Prayer Shawl Ministry that of-fers tangible evidence of prayer; prayersthat are knit into the shawls and that therecipient is wrapped in with each shawl.

One member of the prayer shawl grouptold us that she had taken a shawl to asick friend with the prayers and a cardand was very surprised and moved byhow much the shawl meant to her friend. She told her daughter of this experienceand was surprised when her daughtertearfully asked her to make a shawl forher. The woman asked her daughter whyshe wanted a prayer shawl and thedaughter told her she wanted the shawlso she could wrap herself in God’s loveand prayers for the rest of her life.

Our prayer shawl group meets the SEC-OND Saturday of every month in the Gar-den Room of St. Andrew’s Village from9-11 a.m. Come and pray and knit withus if you can, or pray and knit at homeand bring us your shawl for gifting.

Contact: Jackie O’Neill, 651-770-1155.

A Constant ComfortTo those who pray for and make the prayer shawls:

My name is JoAnne and I haveworked at the Preschools of St.Andrew's for over 13 years. In2008 during a routine kidneystone operation, the doctorsdiscovered I had bladder can-cer. I was given a prayer shawland read the insert and felt alittle guilty. I thought someoneelse may need this more than I.So I set it next to my bed.

A few months passed and I had arecurrence of cancer, another surgery, and my first chemo drug. I was feeling achill and looked at my shawl and put it on. I felt an instant warmth and calm-ness, as if God's own arms were wrapped around me.

Over the next five years I would have six more cancer treatments, seven sur-geries, and 30 chemo treatments. My shawl has been a constant comfort tome. I am happy to report that I have been cancer free for one year.

Thank you so much for sharing your gift (my shawl is beautiful) and your love ofGod. It means so much to those who receive it.

May God bless each and every one of you.

JoAnne

By Sara Fortin

I can’t think of a time in my life when Iwasn’t in a small group of some kind. Some were learning groups (elementaryschool) or activity groups (Girl Scouts). Inhigh school they were social groups. Itwasn’t until college that a small group be-came part of my faith life. For me to growin my faith I need significant relationshipswhere trust and honesty are woven intothe fabric of life together.

Sunday morning worship, the most visible expression ofchurch life, is only one leg on the “stool” that hold me in mylife with Christ. If all I do is attend church, the public recitalof Grace, the stool would never hold me. One leg long and theothers short or non-existent would make it pretty tippy!

So the four legs that I need to support me are: Sanctuary (thelarge community gathering), the House (a small group experi-ence), the Closet (that place of solitude where I can hear thestill small voice of God) and finally, the Sidewalk (where I givemyself away in service to others).

In a small group I have a chance to be known, it is a place fordisclosure, for being with, for seeing God at work in another, for appreciating each other’s unique gifts and strengths, andholding one another accountable for using them in the world. It is that safe place where I can talk about the Goodness ofGod and question it as well. A place to take what I heard onSunday and learn how to put it into practice.

Please join me in finding a small group to be part of. If youdon’t see one that meets your needs, consider starting one ofyour own. Training is available!

Over 150 St. Andrew's volunteersbegan with a bare foundation atthe site at 2144 County Road E inWhite Bear Lake at the beginningof June. Thank you! After five vol-unteer weeks filled with laughterand fellowship (and a little sweat),it looked like a completed house on the outside. Thank you! Some 20+ year old friendships were renewed and many newones formed. Friendships forged in mission work often last alifetime!

First Lutheran Church of WBL, WBL United Methodist Church, the St. Croix Valley Coalition of Churches and Roof Raisers pro-vided volunteers for the remaining three scheduled weeks tobring the house and garage nearer to completion. The St. An-drew's Tuesday Regular Crew will work on finishing touches fora while longer. If anyone is interested in being part of the Tues-day Habitat Crew, please contact Dave Engh,[email protected] 651-482-8642.

Many thanks to members andfriends of St. Andrew's whosupported the project with theirprayers, donations of money($29,000!), meals, snacks andbeverages. The Run For Othersparticipants and Cemstone con-

tributed around $3,600 of this amount. Three members of a St.Andrew's family biked 500 miles in the Habitat 500 to raise anadditional $5,000! Thank you! This really shows how we havetaken our mission statement to SERVE seriously!

The four bedroom house will be the new home for AbdirizakMohamud & Khadijo Ali and their five children who will finallyhave room to spread out. Abdi works at Goodwill Easter Sealsas a social worker, so is very involved in service. Khadijo is astay-at-home mom.

Watch for details and attend the home dedication likely to takeplace in late fall once the homeowner family has their downpayment of 400 hours of “sweat equity” completed.

St. Mary Ultrasound ProjectThe SonoSite NanoMaxx portable ultra-sound machine was presented on July 4,2014 to Annotto Bay Hospital in St Mary,Jamaica. The machine was donated bySoundCaring, SonoSite’s charitable foun-dation. The purchase of the transducers, accessories, and reference manuals weremade possible by a grant from St. An-drew’s Lutheran Church BenevolenceGiving Program, Mahtomedi, Minnesota.St. Andrew’s Church has also generouslygiven grant money towards training andtravel expenses. Total of donated equip-ment: $28, 800.

The emergency room physicians wereecstatic and put the ultrasound machine

to use on a patient within an hour of itsreceipt. It has enabled them to do FAST(Focused Assessment with Sonographyfor Trauma) examinations on trauma pa-tients, deep vein thrombosis detection, and bedside assessments for obstetricalemergencies.

The lead emergency department physi-cian has had initial ultrasound training atthe University of West Indies, Kingston.Other staff physicians and a radiologytechnician received an orientation on asimilar ultrasound machine in January2014. All staff will receive additional

training in the fall of 2014 by Ms. DawnGrey, sonographer, from Minnesota.

In addition, two fetal dopplers were pre-sented to the midwives at Port MariaHospital to replace their antiquated heartbeat listening devices. They had receivedultrasound training in January to assessfetal position, placental position, and fetalviability on the SonoSite machine do-nated to Port Maria Hospital.

From Africa to Minnesota, Dreams Come Truethrough LSS Host Home ProgramAt 25 years old, Nanree has conquered more challenges than most people face in a lifetime. As a teenager, she and herfamily came to the United States from Liberia as refugees. Adjustment struggles for Nanree led to depression, a hospitalstay and then a group home.Florence McGill (who runs a catering business), and her husband, Edwin, were empty nesters, looking for ways to share.“We wanted to know what it was like to open our home to a neighbor in need,” Florence shared. They became an LSS HostHome provider opening their home to a person with a disability.

“The day Nanree moved in with us wasmagic,” she said. As fate would have it, Flo-rence and Nanree both grew up in Liberia,West Africa. “Our connection was automatic. Now, my husband and I have a daughter whois constantly in our thoughts.”

Nanree’s greatest accomplishment was adream come true. Earlier this year, Florenceand Edwin watched as Nanree became anAmerican Citizen. “Nanree wanted to earn hercitizenship to vote and share her voice.” Withrenewed confidence and strength she nowhas a new dream: “I want to become a nurseand help other kids find happiness like I did,” Nanree shared.

On June 26, Erin Morris, director of youthministry at St. Andrew’s, along withBritain Grainger and Andrew McIntyrewent with the VBS teaching group to Mar-tin, Slovakia. During the week of June 30to July 4, Erin, Britain and Andrew men-tored and worked with nine high schoolstudents and two adult mentors in Martinto establish the Peer Ministry Leadershipprogram.

Britain will be a senior at White Bear HighSchool this fall, and Andrew is a first yearstudent at St. John’s University. BothBritain and Andrew have been active inPeer Ministry Leadership during theirhigh school years and were selected tolead this ministry in Slovakia as theyhave among their peers at St. Andrew’s.

Peer Ministry Leadership is defined as“Good Samaritan Leadership is Caring,Welcoming and Affirming Every Day,Everywhere, Every Relationship.” Trainingfor this program was carried out thissummer in Martin, Slovakia, by establish-ing key high school youth to build astructure of student leadership and agrowing and healthy youth ministry. Inthis program students learn to be alert tothe needs of others with compassionatehearts, welcoming and caring for others,by listening patiently, and being willing togive help to others with compassionatehearts.

This understanding of student leadershipamong peers is a key way in which youthministry carries out the example ofJesus’ story of the Good Samaritan whostopped to help an injured person on theroad between Jericho and Jerusalem.Jesus’ story presents how caring for aperson in need and even providing provi-sions for further care illustrates howhealth and wholeness can come to a per-son.

Peer Ministry through Vision Slovakiaby Erin MorrisPeer Ministry asks people to share deeplytheir thoughts and feelings about a vari-ety of experiences and issues. You aretaught to truly listen to someone andhear whatthey are say-ing. You arechallenged tostep out ofyour comfortzone, riskopening upto others aswell asdeeply listento another’sjoys andpains. Nowimaginedoing this ina foreign lan-guage withstudentsfrom a cul-ture that hasbeen taughtthat vulnerability is weakness and wouldbe exploited as well as trying to trust acomplete stranger to teach you.

We worked with nine youth and twoadults from Martin, sharing our stories offaith and life, listening to one another’sexperience of grace and forgiveness. These youth now will be working in theirschools to see those who are lost andlonely, those who need a friend, thosewho are in crisis or those who just needto talk through something. It was amaz-ing to be part of their community, to seeGod working in their lives, and how eventhough miles separate us, our God bringsus together.

Peer Ministry Reflections by Andrew McIntyreBeginning my trip to Slovakia, I had noidea what I expected to meet there. ThePeer Ministry program being new, we hadlittle preparation aside from our own

training and the will of God.On the first day with thehigh school students, I knewit was going to be very dif-ferent from anything I hadexperienced before. The kidswere very welcoming andfriendly, and all seemed toget along well with us andwith each other. Theyshowed hard dedication tothe Peer Ministry training, and also to learning whatthey could from us aboutAmerica. The adult helpersalso were very enthusiasticabout the program, and doveinto the training with asmuch conviction as the stu-dents. They also made itclear that they intended tocontinue the Peer Ministry

training in the future, as well as follow upregularly with those students alreadytrained. Throughout the week we feltGod’s love moving the kids to both opentheir hearts to each other, and to reachout to those around them in need.

Outside of teaching Peer Ministry, we ex-perienced many other amazing placesand activities. The stone church that wevisited was absolutely breathtaking, and Ihave seldom felt the spirit as strongly as Idid during the service inside that church. The wooden church of Bohdan’s grandfa-ther was also incredible, and gave verygood insight as to what exactly the pointof a dream is. Words cannot describehow amazing Gdansk and Krakow were.It was the experience of a lifetime, and Ihope to have the opportunity to return.

Since the summer of 2001 members ofSt. Andrew’s and partner congregationshave taught Vacation Bible School withpre-school and elementary school chil-dren in Martin, Slovakia. This summer agroup of eleven from St. Andrew’s, Ro-seville Lutheran Church, AtonementLutheran Church in Fargo, ND, and GraceLutheran Church in River Forest, IL, madeup this year’s teaching group.

Our VBS theme this year was “The Joy ofBeing Found,” which grew out of fiveBible stories and parables of Jesus, teaching us the joy of our being found aschildren of God. We began the week withthe joy of Jesus’ parents finding their sonin the Temple, and then proceeded withthe stories of the joy of Jesus callingPeter, James and John from their fishingtrade to following him as his disciples, the joy of the shepherd finding his lostsheep, the thankfulness of the personwho was beaten by robbers and found bythe good Samaritan, and the joy of theparalyzed man who was brought by hisfour friends to Jesus to be healed.

Together with times of group singing, dramatic presentations of the stories, craft projects, recreation games, studentsand teachers enjoy a fun-filled and fo-cused time on our growth in our faith and

the joy of sharing what it means to havebeen found by God and to experience ourdaily life centered in Christ.

As you read this, it is not too early or youto pray and think about your calling toshare your faith and join in ameaningful adventure of teach-ing VBS in the rich cultural na-tion of Slovakia. We teach inEnglish and are translatedthrough gifted interpreters. Please be in touch with JanGilbertson or Paul Berge to ex-plore more of the joy of beingpart of a team from St. An-drew’s. The VBS trip next yearwill be from June 25 to July 7,2015

Peer Ministry Reflections by Britain GraingerThe Peer Ministry program took off inMartin. The kids were so interested in itand wanted to learn more and moreabout Peer Ministry. It was interesting tolearn differences in our cultures, whichare similar, but also very different. PeerMinistry is very conversationally basedand that is not how their culture is, so forthem that made it difficult. This programhas the potential to be huge!

I loved meeting the high school kids andtheir teachers! They were all so nice andthere for the right reasons. I didn’t feellike there was any age difference be-tween the high school students and me,but there was at least two or three years!I grew close with one of the high schoolgirls and she actually took me out to cof-fee and shopping which are two of my fa-vorite things!

We took two afternoon trips to a stonechurch and a wooden church I have neverseen anything like this so I thought it wasamazing. Hearing the history of thewooden church surprised me. I learnedabout the persecution in school, but youdon’t realize how much they struggleduntil you see it. I thought this was an un-forgettable experience.

The museum in Gdansk, Poland, was afavorite onthe wholetrip. I wasnot awarehow horriblethe commu-nist periodwas. Thisjust showeda little partof it. Somany othercountries

were involved. I now realize that I can’ttake anything for granted.

This trip helped me grow in my faith. Iwas able to take a week and really con-nect with Jesus. I always thought confir-mation camp would be the most moving, but Vacation Bible School in Martin wasextremely transformational. Even withthe language barrier we were still able toread the same Bible verses and sing thesame songs.
