Animating Planetary Quarantine

Marian Dumitriu

Started the animation by opening adobe flash then modifying the document’s dimensions to (1024px x 768px) in order fit regular screen size, thus when I render the animation, the quality of file would be greater. I remember last year when I created my first animation I didn’t change the size of flash file and when I exported the file into a .AVI file the resolution was extremely low and thus stretching the video to size would result in poor quality.

Then created 4 basic layers that I would use in my animation. Renamed layers then created blank keyframes to create an estimate of how long the animation would be and what images I will need.

On the background Layer I’ve turn the Brightness of the image to -100 so that it would display a black screen then left enough frames to create one second and inserted a keyframe. Used “Create Classic Tween” function to create an animation between the two keyframes. This would create a fade from black to the background image.

Imported the basic P & Q image, then using a green line I traced the P&Q image to create this layer that would support my animation later on.

Once the green outline was compete I’ve animated a ‘slash’ (blade) effect, this was done by drawing white shapes inside the outline throughout 21 frames (1.1sec).

To make sure that I was drawing accurately I’ve used the ‘onion’ tool, which can be found on the left bottom side of the screen (Looks like this { . }) once pressed on the frame bar you can see this notifying that it work and you can change the frames you can view. The onion tool mimics the frames drawn previously so you can draw over them, the mimics cannot me seen if clip is exported.

After, I’ve set the alfa level to various values of ident in different keyframes then created classic twins, so that the ident can fade in and out

Then copied my ident into the flash file. The ident didn’t match the green outline, thus I’ve decided to stretch the ident to fit the green line. This way the animated effect will match with the final

After the animation was competed I’ve realised that the audience wouldn't know what P & Q stand from. Thus I’ve resized the ident to leave enough space for the text “Planetary Quarantine”

Time to create the text, opened a Photoshop file and inserted a text box and wrote my ident name. Now my ident has to fit the same theme as the one in the flash file. I’ve used the brush to create the shadow in a new layer, next I’ve used the sponge & burn tool.

Saved the image and then imported it to the flash file. When imported the image had a white background, which had to be removed. Problem is that objects from Photoshop are difficult to copy to other platforms, thus I imported the image in Fireworks and decided to edit it a bit further.

Looking back in the flash file I’ve realised that the ident had few flaws such as the once circled so I reedited the image slightly.

Inserted the text, resized it correctly, and place it in the correct frames so it can be animated (fade in/out) then the file was exported.
