FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to Private Lives. Sophisticated and unpredictable, it is often called Noël Coward’s masterpiece.

Unless the playwright’s masterpiece was Coward himself; he spent a lifetime crafting the public persona of a fl amboyant, upper class sensualist and wit, despite his lower middle class birth. TIME said of Coward in 1969, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, that he embodied a unique combination of “cheek and chic, pose and poise.”

Noël Coward, master of language that he was, used words to play and tease, to provoke, and to ignite. And sometimes, to protect; Barry Day, the fi nest Coward biographer, says of him, “An essentially private person for so public a persona, he consistently used words to create an image behind which he could hide his more vulnerable emotions.” In Private Lives, Coward imbues his famous couple, Amanda and Elyot, with those same qualities – pose and poise, wit, and an underlying vulnerability. I’ve spent time in rehearsals with my cast exploring not only the power of Coward’s words to provoke a laugh, but a laugh’s ability to keep a character’s more unruly emotions at bay.

When we meet Amanda on the balcony of a luxurious hotel, she has just married Victor Prynne, a man to whom the word “unruly” does not apply. Putting myself in Amanda’s place, I can rather see the appeal of a man like Victor. After a tempestuous fi rst marriage that ended in a messy, probably public, divorce, someone like Victor – uncomplicated, well-mannered, a bit paternalistic – might be just what a girl needs to soothe her heart and repair her vanity. So what if he isn’t quite as smart as she is. So what if he’s boring and thickly earnest. So what if he lacks passion and never gets her jokes. She married that guy last time around and it was a disaster.

Comparing her two grooms would be natural enough on her second wedding night, although it would be best to deny it to Victor, which she does. Repeatedly. (Add that to the list above, “requires constant reassurance.” How tiresome). Elyot wasn’t

“So what if he isn’t quite as smart as she is. She married that guy last time around and it was a disaster.”

FROM THE DIRECTOR (continued)

tiresome; he made her laugh. And he looked so dashing in a tuxedo. Such a graceful dancer, too – and that voice! Comparing her two choices is irresistible, even before her fi rst husband appears on the adjoining balcony. And it doesn’t come out in Victor’s favor.

Elyot feels the same. His new wife Sibyl is pretty and proper and predictable. But his chemistry with Amanda, even after fi ve years, is undeniable, if destructive. They may hate each other, but they also desire each other with a passion they have for no one else. They may love each other, but they also love to fi ght, and win.

One of the joys of this play, for me, is the way Coward plays out their amity and explosiveness before our eyes, particularly in Act II. For a master of words, or The Master, as he is sometimes called, Coward is deft with the silences, too – the moments when words fail and there is no choice but to dance, or play music, or make love, or make war.

We had a wonderful time discovering it all. I hope you enjoy it.

—Kathryn MacMillan
