9th Grade Students at YHS in Fall of 2017-18

We are really excited that Yelm

High School will return to a 9-12

comprehensive campus in the

fall of 2017-18. Our current 7th

grade students will be the first

freshmen class we will serve.

Over the next 15 months, 12

modular and portable class-

rooms will be added to the cam-

pus to house our 9th grade popu-

lation. The first buildings could

arrive at YHS in May of this

school year.

Housing a 9-12 student body on

the high school campus has

been our goal all along, and we

feel the instructional program

will be the best way to serve

high school students. That first

class, the class of 2021 is also

the first class required to meet

the 24 credit graduation require-

ments. Perfect timing!

With the arrival of the freshmen,

we will have a 9th grade program

designed to promote high levels

of success in high school. We

will need to add approximately

19 teachers for the current size

of the class. There will likely be

an additional assistant principal,

classified staff and supports for

students. Our 9th grade stu-

dents will be full members of the

student body, but also be in-

volved in transition activities to

support their step up to high

school accountability. The fea-

tures of our 9th grade program

will include:

A guidance counselor with

exclusively assigned to

9th graders and their

needs

Strong orientation program

for both students and

parents

The teaching staff will be

predominantly as-

signed to 9th graders.

Our freshmen will have

some access to blend-

ed programs such as

choir, band, PE and

selected CTE programs

Most of the classrooms to

be used for 9th grade

will be in a core area of

campus. Freshmen

will not have as far to

travel between classes

Full, on campus access to

clubs, sports and activ-

ities after school

Benefit from strong mentor-

ing from older peers

We will begin working with the

class of 2021 this spring. We

are really excited for this change

as we know our students will

have a stronger, more struc-

tured transition into high school.

It's been an

eventful

month in

the YHS

Leadership

class. We

ended the

first semes-

ter with an

incredible

Snow Ball dance and boys bas-

ketball game. King and Queen

were randomly drawn at

halftime, Maria Aguilar and Up-

ton Yost were the lucky winners.

It was a great event, and we plan

on having it again next year.

Leadership students have been

working hard planning activities

and events for March and April.

Coming up, we have the second

annual YHS Spring Egg Hunt

where students can find eggs

with candy and other special

prizes in them. Also, the Event

Committee has been planning a

movie and book drive for Seattle

Children's Hospital for a thought-

ful service project. Teacher Ap-

preciation Week is getting close,

and you bet leadership students

are doing something for our

amazing teachers. We will also

be having a Care Week designed

to help shape the culture of Yelm

High School into the best it can

be. Get ready for an amazing

next few months!

Scholarship and College Information

Counselor Corner The counselors

have been going

into classrooms

to deliver Junior

credit checks.

Juniors were giv-

en information

regarding what

classes they will need next year in order to

graduate. Counselors also went over the

varying requirements of all options beyond

high school, including entrance to a 4 year

college, 2 year college, Military career, Ap-

prenticeship, or workforce entry. The goal is

to have all students make good decisions

about the courses they choose next year

based on their own personal and profession-

al goals. With the entry and requirement

information, counselors hope to empower

students to make good decisions and good

choices.

Pre-registration will happen in March. Stu-

dents will have approximately one month to

plan for next years registration. Parent in-

volvement is important as students are mak-

ing some very important decisions regarding

their future. Ask your student about it today!

Rotary Student of the Month for February is Brianna Feller

Brianna Feller is a strong student and also

attends South Puget Sound Community Col-

lege. She hopes to earn her AA degree at

the same time she graduates from YHS. At

the high school Brianna serves as senior ASB

treasurer and volunteers to help others

whenever possible. Brianna coordinated a

school scarf fundraiser as a leadership event

and organized other students to help. The

money raised by her efforts will offset costs

of leadership camp for future student lead-

ers. Brianna has volunteered to help train

new treasurers to work with the ASB office.

Outside of school Brianna works at Casa Mia

and also enjoys riding horses. She plans to

attend Arizona State University next fall with

the goal of studying Communications.
