Matthew Mercer’s latest full-length album Salvo is a return to beatmaking after last year’s ambient release, Supernatant. While he has explored rhythmic music in the past, starting with the cut-up techno of his first two singles Secrets I & II, Salvo is a different animal. Whether in the glitchy stride of opener “Preparedness,” the spry electro- techno crossover of “Hotwired,” or the improvised sputter of “When Suddenly,” Salvo’s emphasis is on layered, complex beats and finely tuned details. While there are deliberate nods to the dancefloor, Salvo is more of a lateral move rather than a direct return to dance music. Mercer’s solo albums Supernatant (2015) and Pianissimo Possibile (2011) left his four minimal techno EPs and 12” singles of the ’00s behind, focusing on dense, minimal drones, deconstructed piano recordings and electronics. He has spent recent years scoring films, including the documentary feature Vintage Tomorrows (2016). Aside from his solo releases and remixing work for various artists (Sarah Nixey, Ladytron among them), Mercer is one half of both electronic pop groups Microfilm and Jumberlack & the Cobra. What people have written about Matthew Mercer’s music previously: “This isn’t the pace of something slowed down so much as something experienced in a perception-altering state. All in all it’s like the doppler effect in full majestic mode.” Disquiet.org “In contrast to his work with Microfilm, this new work is dark in texture and serious in focus. By building the sounds almost purely from piano, the music is extremely cohesive and free of distractions. […] There’s something just so versatile in the kind of sounds pianos can make when put through the ringer.” LikeAScientist.org “The irony is that Pianissimo Possibile translates into “as quiet as possible”; though the music lacks the sonic volume as house music would, Mercer’s musical study is grandiose. […] I have not been as mesmerized by a completely instrumental collection since Michael Nyman in 1993. Matthew Mercer, through a minimalist approach and an elaborate visceral undertow, has really created a collection of songs that you should invest in.” SlowDiveMusic Blog “Criminally overlooked electronic producer Matthew Mercer’s […] new release Supernatant is a truly jaw-dropping tour-de-force — nearly an hour of mind-bending soundscapes. This is without a doubt one of the strongest releases that could be grouped as “dark ambient” this year… A minor masterpiece.” – Foreign Accents 1. Preparedness (5:32) 2. Bombs Away (4:30) 3. PRESS RELEASE

MATTHEW MERCERSALVO

RELEASE DATE: 4 MARCH 2016AVAILABLE THROUGH MOST DIGITAL MUSIC SERVICES

salvo: A sudden, vigorous, or aggressive act or series of acts.

Matthew Mercer’s latest full-length album Salvo is a return to beatmaking after last year’s ambient release, Supernatant. While he has explored rhythmic music in the past, starting with the cut-up techno of his first two singles Secrets I & II, Salvo is a different animal.

Whether in the glitchy stride of opener “Preparedness,” the spry electro-techno crossover of “Hotwired,” or the improvised sputter of “When Suddenly,” Salvo’s emphasis is on layered, complex beats and finely tuned details.
