The program guide called Step by Step to the Ten Toe Express outlines the steps needed to start a new “Ten Toe Express” program. The program itself encourages seniors to combine walking with public transportation to visit cultural and historic sites a fun, novel form of exercise. The guide is aimed at professionals who create programs for older adults and is designed to be readily adaptable to many locations and budgets. The program has enjoyed considerable success in St. Louis, with over 6,500 participants. One participant, Carol Haneman, had this to say about the program, “It has been so much fun making new friends on the Ten Toes adventures. […] You don’t notice that you’ve had a great walk and gotten some good exercise.” The Ten Toes Express program is unique because it allows senior citizens to socialize, see parts of town they haven’t visited before, and learn to use public transportation – all while getting a healthy dose of exercise.
