• President Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase.– Jefferson went against his own principle of strictly
interpreting the Constitution to buy the Louisiana Territory.
• He bought the land from Napoleon Bonaparte of France – Bonaparte sold the land to Jefferson for 15 million– The Louisiana Territory doubled the size of the
United States.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition
• The Lewis and Clark Expedition was also called the Corps of Discovery– The expedition was sent out into the Louisiana
Territory by President Jefferson to:• Find a water route to the Pacific Ocean by following the
Missouri River to its source.• Establish trade relationships with Native Americans.• Exert control over the Native Americans• Gain other information (flora and Fauna) the land that
had been acquired.
Sacajawea• Native Americans greatly aided the Corps of
Discovery• Sacajawea helped in the following ways:– finding edible foods (plants and funguses hunting
and fishing)– Translated– Acquired horses and other supplies need by the
