Shibori is a Japanese term that encompasses several different methods of dyeing patterns into cloth by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, and compressing, using a unique and unexpected set of tools as resists. Many cultures have put their own twist on Shibori, and many in the West identify these methods as “tie-dye”. A more accurate translation is "shaped resist dyeing," which describes the inherent patterning process of manipulating the two-dimensional cloth surface into three-dimensional shapes before dyeing. Exploring the Ancient techniques and traditional ways gives contemporary artists a framework not only to explore shaping methods but also to modify the materials and tools. While Indigo vat dyeing is primarily the dye used for Shibori, we will learn how adding different colors and applications can enhance these traditional techniques. Hands On Hand Dyes will provide each student with their own set all of unique Shibori tools, dye, fixatives, detergent, coaching, and ample “PFD” cotton fabric to explore each of the techniques you learn. You will create original, beautiful works of art.11: This class is and advanced class for the true “DYEHARDS” as it will be a big day of fabric prep on Sunday. Some previous experience with fabric dyeing is helpful, but not necessary. You will learn 8 different methods, and have the opportunity to explore variations on each method. Monday will be filled with different dyeing methods, vat dyeing and dye painting with classroom dyes in traditional Shibori colors, some playful brights, some earth tones, and rich jewel tones. We will do some preliminary rinsing, and then the unfolding! It will all be worth it when you see the amazing collection of truly unique Shibori fabrics you will be adding to your stash!
