Our 72nd season of diversemusic from many lands

opens with Robert Schumann’soverture for a staged version ofByron’s romantic epic detailing theturbulent life of his anti-heroManfred, and closes withBeethoven’s masterpiece ofrhythm, his Seventh Symphony. Rising star William Hagenmakes his ESO debut in a cornerstone of the repertoire, the Violin Concerto by Finland’s most famouscomposer, Jan Sibelius.

The title of our second concertsummarizes but does not

encompass the diversity andrichness of the “Spanish” and“Latin” works on this exciting andcolorful program, which includesFrench and Russian versions ofSpain, as well as music fromArgentina by Ginastera and Piazzolla and a Mexicanmasterpiece by José Pablo Moncayo. The one work bya Spanish composer is the most popular of all guitarconcertos and will be interpreted by the gifted Jason BlairLewis, and the concert closes with Bernstein’s excitingdance of Puerto Ricans in New York.

OUR SPONSORS

A great thank you to our generous sponsors for the 2017–2018 ESO season!

The final 12 symphonies ofFranz Joseph Haydn are

collectively known as his“London symphonies” andthe final one of the 12, to somethe greatest of all, is titled the“London” Symphony. WilliamWalton’s Crown Imperial hasbeen wittily referred to as the “Pomp and CircumstanceMarch No. 6” as a worthy successor to Elgar’s five Pompand Circumstance marches. Britten’s orchestral showpiececan also be titled “Variations and Fugue on a Theme ofHenry Purcell,” and will be narrated by Henry Fogel,Dean of the Chicago College of Performing Arts ofRoosevelt University.

The First Piano Concerto ofJohannes Brahms is among

his most important works andamong the most difficult concertosever composed. Its monumentalnature is a direct descendent ofanother D Minor masterpiece,Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.Thomas Pandolfi makes his ESO debut in its demandingsolo role. Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet is based onRussian folk legends and gave him his first major acclaim, and it has remained his “biggest hit” ever since its premierein 1910. Stravinsky compiled several suites from the musicfor the complete ballet, and our season concludes with thelongest of those suites, prepared in 1945.
