1 A fresh start

Welcome to this session! If you’re considering homeschooling for the first time, pleasedon’t let anyone scare you away before you’ve tried it it’s really fun and easy, for

 parents and children alie"

2 #his is not legal advice, only a guide"

I’m not a lawyer, so please don’t misunderstand any of this as legal advice" If you would

lie sound legal advice, I would recommend contacting either $%&'A (www"hslda"org)or *$& (www"ncll"org+chl)

$omeschooling is a good choice

#rain up a child in the way he should go- and when he is old, he will not depart from it".roverbs 22-/

#here are a lot of great reasons to homeschool

$igh test scores among homeschoolers

&ac of negative influences found in schoolsAbility to be selective with curriculum to choose that which aligns best with your faith

0o bulliesou’ll get an opportunity to build a better relationship with your ids

our ids can ecel at topics they en3oy 4 won’t be held bac by slower students (learn at

own pace), enabling them to get started on their life’s passions early I was fiingcomputers when I was 12, and now my wife I own a computer shop"

0o matter what your reason is, don’t feel lie you’re admitting defeat by removing your

child from public schools rather, you’re choosing which path will allow you to raise your

child the best" 6ducation is about opportunity for growth and nowledge, not unneededchallenges" 7ae the most of your children’s formative years, rather than s8uandering it

on

9 #hings to do

/ &egal re8uirements

%ubmit a letter of intent" $ere’s an eample- @'ear 7r" %mith (superintendent), We

intend to educate our sons, ;ac and red, in our home at 12 %treet during the upcomingschool year" In compliance with these state statutes, we are enclosing a list of the

curriculum+boos for the seven re8uired sub3ects intended for use in our school

program"B #he letter of intent should contain the name of the tetboo for each of theseven sub3ects, and should include the grade level to show that it’s a se8uentially

progressive curriculum" #he re8uired sub3ects are reading, writing, mathematics, civics,

history, literature, and science" If you teach any additional courses, you don’t have toinclude them in the list"

*ompulsory Attendance Age- Age C by %eptember 15 of the current year, through age 1/

or 1Dth grade

%chool year must be at least 1C5 days long".arents must annually submit a curriculum to the local board of trustees showing that a

@basic academic educational programB is provided"

0o more than one family unit (you can’t teach the neighbor’s ids")

#here are no teacher 8ualifications and no mandatory tests"

C 'on’t let the schools push you around" Enow your rights"%chools often try to force you to fill out forms and bring in your curriculum for approval

this is not legal for them to re8uire" If they as for anything beyond that which is

re8uired, immediately see help from an organiFation lie $%&'A before you respond tothe school"

G #eaching is easy

#he important thing to bear in mind is that the nowledge comes from the curriculum"ou can teach American $istory, even if you grew up in *anada and never learned about

#he Alamo 7assacre or the :oston #ea .arty" When you open your child’s tetboo to

the lesson about 'avey *rocett, you’ll learn about the Alamo right along side them"#he only sills you need to be a homeschool teacher are patience and perseverance" It’s

my firm belief that teaching through eample is one of the most powerful ways you will

impact your child if you don’t now the answer to something, don’t be afraid to say @Idon’t now, lets chec WiipediaB, and loo it up with them" ou’ll liely find that the

lessons learned together are the ones your child remembers best"

H *hoosing a curriculum#here are advantages to every method try to visit with other parents who homeschool to

find out what wors best for them and why" Also visit the session later today entitled

@$omeschooling 7ethodsB"If finances are a concern, you can save a lot of money by purchasing used curriculum" If

you now the method you would lie to use, but are unsure which curriculum would

wor best for you, used boo sales are a great place to glean wisdom from other parents"If you already now eactly what you need, you may be able to find good deals online at

websites lie 6bay or AmaFon" 7any support groups also have classifieds in their

newsletters"

#here are local support groups all over the state, and they are a great place to gain

encouragement and advice from friends who deal with the same obstacles as you" #hey

are typically loose=nit and free to 3oin, and provide opportunities for fun and educationaletracurricular activities" rowing up in %heridan, our support group met about once a

wee for fun activities (swimming at the , sating at the roller rin, or bowling), and

held a meeting+get together, field trip, and boo=it piFFa day each at least once a month"

11 :ut what aboutJK#here are many advantages to homeschooling, but many people are afraid of perceived

drawbacs" While there are things that can seem lie a loss, there are always options"

or instance, sports- 7ost Wyoming counties have >recreation districts’ or 7*As that

provide opportunities for team sports" While I wouldn’t recommend it, you can evenenroll your homeschooled child in highschool sports 4 a right protected by Wyoming law"

Another 8uestion I’m fre8uently ased by non=homeschoolers is about socialiFation"

While it’s true that ids lie to spend time with their friends while at school, is it really a

healthy thingK %chool is a time for education, not >playing with friends"’ When youhomeschool, you have plenty of time to spend with your friends after school is out" ou

learn a lot more when you aren’t worrying about your hair+clothes, or trying to passnotes" I’m also often told that without non=stop peer interaction, ids won’t be able to

operate in the business world after graduation" While this is absurd reasoning, it does

point out an important advantage to home education- I learned to interact with the worldaround me by interacting with people older and younger than myself, thus getting >real=

world’ eperience" A public schooler, on the other hand, learns their social sills from

other people their own age who also don’t now what they’re doing, and who mold your

child into their own image" I would rather my child learn social sills from a mied agegroup in mied settings, lie *hurch, and homeschool support group meetings, rather

than forced segregation at public schools"

12 A word of warning

$omeschool is still school, and it’s a best practice to treat it as such" rowing up, we

never left home to run errands on a school day during school hours" #he ids also neveranswered the phone or the door during school hours" 6ven if we were busy doing school

wor, or had finished our studies for the day, a stranger would see us and assume we

were >playing hooey"’ If the same stranger saw it more than once, they might get the

wrong idea and thin we were neglecting our education"
