    The Present Perfect Simple compared to the

    Present Perfect Continuous

    Study these examples:a) She has washed her blouse.(we are not interested in the action

    of washing but in the finished result : the blouse is clean now.)She has been washingher blouse. (we are interested in the action,

    she may or may not have finished, its not important)

    b)We use the present perfect simple to say how much, howmany,

    how often.e.g. e has sold five cars so far.

    !hey have goneto "rance twice this year.We use the present perfect continuous to say how long.e.g. e has been selling cars for ten years.

    c) !he #resent #erfect Simple is used for permanent situations.e.g. $ohn has lived in the same village all his life.

    !he #resent #erfect %ontinuous is used for more temporarysituations.

    e.g. &ary has been living with her parents while loo'ing for aflat of her own.

    !here are certain verbs which are not normally used in anycontinuous tense:

    verbs of perception : smell, taste, hear, see.

    verbs expressing li'ing and disli'ing : hate, admire, love, enoy. verbs related to the process of thin'ing : believe, forget, imagine,

    'now, realie, thin', want, wish etc. verbs describing appearance : appear, loo', li'e, seem. verbs referring to possession : belong, contain, have, own,

    possess. verbs related to being : be, exist.

    *ther common verbs not normally used in the continuous form are:mean, interest, involve, surprise.

    havecan be used in the continuous form when it does not have

    the meaning of possession.e.g. $ulie has been havinga bath for the last ten minutes.
