January 4 - Bryson City (P.O. Box 549, Bryson City, NC 28713)th

[email protected] Bryson City Presbyterian Church is still growing in grace. We had a busy summer with our sanctuaryfull, new families joining, and a wonderful family retreat at Montreat at the end of the summer. This fall,we began a ministry called 4th Sunday. Every 4th Sunday, we have a community meal after worship. Ticketsare sold all over town. The proceeds go back into the community supporting the food pantry, emergencyservices, our Swain County United Gift Fund, and an endowment for scholarships. Our goal is to cometogether as a community to share a meal and to help out those in need. We could really use your prayers. This ministry takes a lot of time and work, and we could use more volunteers and a better understandingwithin our community of what we are trying to accomplish. Please pray for our church and for 4th Sunday.Remember our pastor, Terry Hanna.

January 11 - Buladean (217 Blevins Branch Road, Bakersville, NC 28705)th

We give thanks for Rev. Curtis Crowther, who has been with us for the past two years. He has been ablessing to the church. Even though we are a very small church, we give thanks that we are able to supplyten children at Grandfather Home with school supplies and provide Christmas for two children. Pray withus for our newly installed elder, Phillip Elliott.

We ask your prayers for our young families and our childrenwho have become so important in our church life, and prayers for our elderly members whose faith hasbrought us through some difficult times into these days of new, but promising challenges. And we thank youfor your prayers for our pastor, Rev. Maggie Lauterer, who is now in her tenth year serving our church.

January 25 - Calvary (44 Circle Street, Asheville, NC 28801)th

Calvary has been very blessed during the 2008 year. Because of a wonderful partnership with our sisterchurch, Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, we now have a much needed bathroom on the sanctuary levelof the church. Among other things, this Partnership also made possible a spirit-filled Hymn Sing and afantastic Barbeque Fundraiser on the grounds. A “Time of Visioning and Discernment” yielded a newMission Statement and a new Vision Statement. We continue to enjoy a special relationship with Dr. JeanneMatthews of Warren Wilson College, and immensely appreciate the visits of her classes. For the third year,we have participated in Holy Week services with our brothers and sisters in the AMEZ, CME, UnitedMethodist and Presbyterian traditions. We also participate in an ecumenical Christmas Eve service hostedby our sister church, Kenilworth Presbyterian Church. Calvary is also very grateful that retired ministers,Dr. Ron Botsford, Dr. Dave Barstow, Rev. Bill Heck and Rev. Robert Bruce Cumming share themselves withus. Please pray for spiritual and numerical growth at Calvary. Please pray that we discern and follow God’swill for us. We also ask for prayer for our pastor, Rev. November 20, 2008

To: All Pastors and Clerks of Sessions in the Presbytery of Western NC

Dear Friend in the Lord,

Many of you will have received a letter (dated November 2008) from thePresbyterian Lay Committee.

As the enclosed response from the Stated Clerk of the PCUSA General Assemblystates, it is unfortunately a communication full of unfounded charges and, at best, half-truths.

We particularly regret the use of such pejorative and unjust phrases as “Defying its own Constitution”“defrock your minister .... seize your property”“cruel assaults.”

Instead our denomination’s Constitution has manifold safeguards for every member, congregation, and officer.

Please note Stated Clerk Gradye Parsons’ fact that nearly all of the currentlawsuits filed in the PCUSA were initiated by congregations against their Presbyteries.

It seems to be mainly a plea for contributions for the Lay Committee’s LegalAssistance Fund instead of to the mission work of Christ’s Church.

Withholding funds from the Presbytery would have a negative effect on theministry of local churches and our ministry together.

We urge all to follow the Apostle Paul’s advice to “maintain the unity of theChurch in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:)

Peace and grace,

Bobbi White, General Presbyter

James Aydelotte, Stated Clerk

Page 7: PRESBYTERY OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA … · 79th Stated Meeting of Presbytery of Western North Carolina Saturday, January 31, 2009 First Presbyterian Church Asheville, NC FOR YOUR

November 18, 2008 To presbytery and synod executives and stated clerks Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, Congregations in your presbytery recently received correspondence from the Presbyterian Lay Committee that contained many factual errors and may cause great misunderstanding. The purpose of this letter is to speak to those errors and misunderstandings. Re: Constitution Legal Defense Fund The General Assembly did not create a two-million-dollar defense fund, as requested by the Presbytery of Northern New England. The assembly chose, instead, to create an Extra Commitment Opportunity (ECO) fund that would receive voluntary contributions. The name of the ECO is Constitution Legal Defense Fund and it is numbered E052058. To date, we have received no contributions to this fund, and no money from the per capita budget has been allocated for it. Re: presbyteries’ actions about property The letter suggests that presbyteries have taken aggressive actions to deprive congregations of their pastors and property via ecclesiastical processes and the secular courts. The letter misrepresents the actions of presbyteries and misinterprets recent General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission cases. Virtually all actions by presbyteries are reactions to aggressive schismatic behavior by individual congregations and sessions. Of the thirty-nine cases in civil courts, thirty-six have been filed for local sessions. The three filed by presbyteries have sought only that sessions and congregations be required to follow the processes provided by the Book of Order. When sessions/congregations have followed those processes, they have usually been dismissed to the reformed denomination of their choice. It is true that presbyteries served with civil lawsuits have had to expend significant resources in defending our Book of Order processes. In the Sundquist v. Heartland Presbytery case, the General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission (GAPJC) recently affirmed the validity of those processes, which include permitting presbyteries to create structures that can respond to civil lawsuits when they arise, but such processes do not provide for aggressive actions by presbyteries.

Page 8: PRESBYTERY OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA … · 79th Stated Meeting of Presbytery of Western North Carolina Saturday, January 31, 2009 First Presbyterian Church Asheville, NC FOR YOUR

Re: per capita The correspondence also states that the GAPJC has given sessions “absolute and unequivocal authority to direct and disburse all funds received from the congregation.” This, too, misinterprets the GAPJC’s decision. The most recent case contains the following statement: “The congregation’s responsibility is not to itself, but to itself in light of its call to ‘fulfill its responsibilities as the local unit of mission for the service of all people, for the upbuilding of the whole church, and for the Glory of God’ (Book of Order, G-4.0104).” (Johnston v. Heartland Presbytery)  Some final words The action of the 218th General Assembly (Item 04-28) reminds all of us, congregations and governing bodies alike, to heed the words of 1 Cor. 6:7 and avoid lawsuits. No doubt, all conversations about dismissal are tough and painful, but as many of you know, they can also be Christ-like. I know that has been the goal in a majority of cases, but fear has sometimes changed the discourse. Hopefully, this recent action of the assembly can help us avoid future civil cases by having established clear presbytery policies. You may find it helpful to refer to the Advisory Opinions that are posted online (http://www.pcusa.org/constitutionalservices/advisory‐opinion.htm), especially #19: “Implementing the Trust Clause for the Unity of the Church,” and #22: “Actions of the 218th General Assembly related to G-6.0106b and G-6.0108”). There is also a Constitutional Musing (http://www.pcusa.org/constitutionalservices/musings.htm) on “Responding Pastorally to Troubled Churches.” Please know that I pray for you daily – that your ministry will flourish, your faith increase, and that the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7). Yours in Christ,

Gradye Parsons Stated Clerk of the General Assembly

A LETTER FROM THE GENERAL PRESBYTER

November 20, 2008

Dear Friends,

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

Like Paul, who wrote to the Philippians, "I thank God every time I remember you, constantly praying withjoy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day untilnow. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion bythe day of Jesus Christ." As I travel about the presbytery, I am blessed to see the many ways God is workingin your midst. As we go into the Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas seasons, I give thanks for all of youand for your ministries.

Dorland Memorial, a small church, gave extra because they saw a need; Waynesville sent a letter of thanksto the presbytery for offering support they didn't need. They saw the Spirit at work in their midst. Twocandidates from this presbytery were ordained this week. They celebrated renewing of baptism vows andthe Lord's Supper. Third Street is excited about serving Thanksgiving meals for those who wouldotherwise have none.

There were exciting reports for those returning from Guatemala and the Gulf Coast. I know others arethankful for the use of Presbytery's shower trailer after a hard-days-work. I heard a high school studentexplain what it meant to her to be on the Youth Council. I pray for Rachel, our Young Adult Volunteerteaching in Kenya. It is encouraging to hear churches talk about the new members in their midst. God isat work. We need to listen to God's voice and see where God is leading and what God is already doing. Weneed to give thanks and commit ourselves to following where God leads.

I give thanks for our missionaries and for Dr. Barbara Nagy, who particularly needs our prayers. As manyof you know, Barbara has been trying to adopt Happy, a three and a half year old Malawian girl. Happy haslived with Barbara, Anna, and Melia for almost three years and during that time Barbara has been trying tofinalize the adoption. Several weeks ago Happy was taken from Barbara by a social worker that claimedthat Happy had to been returned to her village. Happy had to spend a night at the Crisis Nursery and the nextday she was in a van to be returned to the village, when someone gave her back to Barbara. This has beentraumatic for the whole family. Happy is with Barbara now and they are still trying to work through theadoption. Please keep Happy, Barbara, Anna and Melia in your prayers and pray that the adoption will soonhappen.

One way to give thanks and to remember others in this economic downturn is through the alternativeChristmas giving, whether through the presbytery or other organizations. This year for $20, there are fouradult alternatives: two for Guatemala ( for children's scholarships and the health program) and two forMalawi (the Nkhoma hospital and the new school). There are also great options for children. Order yourcards from Lisa.

In the past some people have given larger gifts for an oxygen concentrator and $500 for one day's supplyof medicine at Nkhoma Hospital. I was asked about opportunities for this year. The cost of medicine forthe hospital and health centers for one day is $500-$600. When asked about a home mission items, Ithought of a way we are trying to help small churches. The presbytery hopes to provide $4,000 or $5,000dollars to several churches to help them be able to pay for a full time pastor. A gift of $400 would be about

Page 10: PRESBYTERY OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA … · 79th Stated Meeting of Presbytery of Western North Carolina Saturday, January 31, 2009 First Presbyterian Church Asheville, NC FOR YOUR

one month's help for those churches. If this is something you want to do, cards will also be provided forthose gifts.

God calls us to reach out to others. We are now a mission field in our own back yard. In spite of theeconomy and the many issues with which we are faced as an individual, churches and presbytery, I havegreat hopes for the next year. The presbytery is going to try to bring in a three-year Bible based process forrenewal and transformation to offer to churches. This program is called the Acts Initiative, using the bookof Acts as its inspiration. This process has had good results in other presbyteries. One pastor said thatalthough he had great success in growing membership, he felt like this process helped him grow disciples. It has been used by large churches and small ones and churches with differing theological perspectives. TheTransformation/Evangelism Committee wants to provide the opportunity for all churches with their pastorsand a team of church leaders to come and hear about the opportunity at a two-day workshop on March 6and 7. More will be coming. Please put that date on your calendar.

We are learning that many of our new members do not have basic knowledge of the Bible. The ChristianEducation Committee is looking at possibilities to offer a program for the presbytery to help. Several placesin the presbytery churches have come together for officer training. If you are interested in this, check withme at the presbytery office.

I am excited when I see the many opportunities we have to bring people to Jesus Christ, to nurture ourmembers, and to demonstrate Christ love for others.

I hope you have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving.

Bobbi

A MISSIONS CONFERENCE ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

http://www.gatlinburgmissionsconference.org/

Joel is a young man whom God has transformed from a lifeless lump of coal into a diamond of rare beauty. God has allowed Joel to beat insurmountable odds in order to live a life of blessing and honor. Burned beyond recognition at the age of two, when a tractor trailer smashed into his family’s car at a toll booth; Joel sustained an 85 percent burn injury. He has learned to accept his circumstances and excel beyond all expectations. Joel has an authentic platform from which to speak to God’s grace, goodness, and love. He proves that the extraordinary is within everyone’s grasp.

Disaster Response Team Report November 1-8, 2008

Orange Grove, Mississippi Twenty-seven energetic team members converged on the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance camp at Orange Grove to share the good news of the gospel and also share themselves. Many on the team had traveled to the gulf region before and were joined with a sprinkling of first timers. Three years after hurricane Katrina it seems almost unbelievable that so much work still remains to be done in order for families to have their homes restored. Houses are in various stages of repair, from small sheetrock repairs and porches to be added, to entire houses with bare 2X4 walls needing electrical wiring and sheetrock installed on walls and ceilings. And survivors are struggling with the same economic difficulties facing so many others in our country. At one of the houses worked on, the homeowner had just been laid off from his job. As the work teams went about their tasks, they were blessed with gifts of friendship, laughter, conversation, story telling, and gracious hospitality. The people we met accompanied us “on our way” as we accompanied them. There surely is power in what God continues to accomplish through survivors and responders. God revealed himself one morning where a team had been building front and back porches on a house. The day before, the front porch was prepared for the installation of a tin roof. The days had been quite warm and bright and the heat and sunlight were going to make it a challenge to install the tin. As soon as the work trailer was unloaded the next day, rain began to fall. It poised the question, was the weather going to avail itself to let the team work outside? Rain continued through the morning as the air grew cooler. Just as the team was finishing lunch, the rain stopped. The sky remained overcast and the air cool. It was pleasant to roof the porch after all. And just after everything was completed, the sun came out for photos of the owner and her new porch roof. So how was our trip? After the days were done, we had seen hands practicing the faith, giving and receiving, We’ll probably never know, to the extend we’d like to, of just how our service to Christ made a difference. But we can be assured that we have been blessed by the experience. Plans are underway for a Spring ’09 disaster response team. Please keep your response in mind and in your prayers. Fall 2008 PWNC Mission Team
