    A Stress Free Wedding

6 easy steps to making your day a little less stressful

    1. stay organized

Be sure to stay organized. Checklists are a great way to make this happen. Use theplanner in the back of Premier Bride to keep you on schedule, or downloadtimelines, checklists, and budgets from pbidaho.com. These are wonderfulworksheets to help your process run a lot smoother.

    2. be the bride

You have one task the day of your wedding and that is to be a beautiful, happybride. Remember you hired your vendors for a reason. They know what they aredoing so let them do their job. You can be sure to tell them anything you arewanting before the wedding but when that day arrives let them do what they dobest.

    3. have a simple rehearsal dinner

Remember the big party is going to happen the next day. For the Rehearsal Dinnerhand over the reins to your fiancee and let him create a comfortable, simple nightfor you and your guests. Simple things like barbecue and a backyard picnic aregreat ideas for a rehearsal dinner. Also, be sure you don't stay out too late. Youhave a big day ahead of you and the last thing you need is to be tired the next day.

    4. decisions for the day

Find someone who is not in the wedding but really wants to help you on yourwedding day. Be sure it is someone you trust and let them deal with all the littlethings the day of the wedding. They can answer any calls that come your way anddeal with making sure everyone knows where to go.

    5. don't forget to eat!

The worst thing you can do on your wedding day is not eat. It is a long day and youneed to be sure you can keep up. Eat a good breakfast and be sure to have lots ofsnack foods around all day. Also, remember that by this point you aren't going tobe able to change how you look in your dress so eat up!

    6. stay relaxed

Be sure you are enjoying this time and don't forget to think about yourself. Itshould not be a stressful time in your life. Don't stop doing your everyday thingslike hanging out with your friends and doing yoga. You can even schedule a fewextra things in your schedule like taking a day off work to just relax or schedulinga spa day for you and some of your friends.

    Finding the right location

    Perfect V

    en

    ue

The secret to planning a fabulous, stress-free wedd

    ing and reception is

finding the right venue. By addressing several issue

    s before you book your

location, you can avoid costly mistakes and unwanted

    surprises, and have the

wedding and reception youve always dreamed of.

    Finding the Right Location

Begin by setting the wedding date, size, budget a

    nd style. Once these

particulars have been established your next major deci

    sion will be the wedding

and reception location. If you already have a place in

    mind contact the facility

manager immediately to confirm the availability of the

    date youve selected and

to schedule an appointment for you and your fianc

    to view the site. Dont

procrastinate! Choice locations are often booked on

e to two years out, and

    prime dates go fast.

If you have no idea where to hold your wedding or

    reception, try hotels,

banquet halls, restaurants, community centers and c

    ountry clubs. Other less

obvious options are country inns, mountain resor

    ts, historic homes or

mansions, city parks, college or university facilit

    ies, art galleries, and

museums. Each location offers its own unique style a

    nd ambiance.

    Types of Facilities

Many locations provide the majority of services you

    will need for your

reception: catering, beverages, tables, chairs, tablew

    are, linens and serving

staff, making them a very convenient option. They no

    rmally charge on a per

person basis, and have a minimum guest requirement

    . Such locations include

    hotels, private clubs and restaurants.

Other locations offer the use of the facility only, providi

    ng no other services.

You supply nearly everything yourself, paying a flat fee

for the use of the site.

The nice thing about off-site locations is the freedom t

    o do everything your way.

Increasingly popular for outdoor receptions is the use

    of party tents. They

offer the ideal solution for couples who want to ho

    ld their celebration in a

natural setting but would prefer not to have their gu

    ests wilting under a hot

sun or melting under a drizzle. Amenities range from

    beautiful archways and

parquet floors to air conditioning and emergency gen

    erators.

In your search for the ideal site, keep in mind the con

    venience and comfort

of your guests. The traveling distance from the cerem

    ony to reception should

not be much longer than half an hour by car. Depending

    on the season in which

you will wed, you might want to inquire about air cond

    itioning or heating. Also,

be sure to check on available parking or valet service.

    Space Issues

While it may seem obvious to say so, the venue you cho

    ose for your wedding

must have enough space to accommodate all your

    guests. There should be

enough room in the dining area to allow for comfortab

    ly arranged seating and

a reasonable view of the newlyweds for everyone. Ther

    e should also be enough

space between tables for you to move around the roo

    m and mingle with your

guests. The facility coordinator will know the maximu

    m number of people who

can fit in the space, as well as the best table arrange

    ments.(continued on page 16)

    Planning the wedding feast doesnt

have to be complicated. A good

caterer will deliver an excellent meal

    and impeccable service within the

    speci-fications of your contract and

    budget.A professional caterer should

    share your enthusiasm for pleasing

    each guest, but unfortunately, thats

not the only qualifier. Youll want to

    address budget, service, the meal

itself, and a variety of details with your

caterer to make sure that the

    qualifications match the enthusiasm.

    Finding Professional Service

    There is no substitute for

    professionalism and experience.

    When selecting your caterer, get

    sound referrals and observe the

    profession-alism of the staff.

Extremely attentive service for a sit-

down meal or cocktail party would

require one server for every 10

guests; for a buffet the number is

significantly less. Service is still quite

good with one server for every 15 to 20

guests. A good caterer will be able to

    explain these ratios and make

suggestions for the best service style

and the appropriate number of servers

    for your budget.

A Meal to RememberAh yes, the food. To ensure a quality

meal, schedule a meeting with the

chef who will prepare it. It is also

appropriate to request a private dinner

sampling for you and your groom,

    remembering your enjoyment there

will be the measure of your guests

    enjoyment at the wedding reception.

Catering BudgetFound a caterer whose food and

service you like? Great. Can you afford

them? The best way to determine the

catering budget is to decide how much

you will spend on each guest. Multiply

that dollar amount by the number of

    guests expected. Then add an

additional 10 percent to cover overage

and approximately 17 to 20 percent for

gratuities. Dont forget to add your

local applicable taxes and any extras

    that arent included in

    the price.

    Caterin

    g

  • Down to DetailsOnce youve decided on a caterer

then take the time to determine as

    many additional details as possible.

    Have a firm agreement, and

    thoroughly examine your contract.

Make sure it clearly states dates,

costs and when deposits are due.

    Your contract should also specify

the food and beverages to be served

and stipulate the number of servers

needed. Check to see that all the

services you requested are listed in

    the contract, such as centerpieces,

    the wedding cake, decorations for

the room and head table and other

labor intensive additions such as ice

    sculptures or any other additional

    needs. Carefully review postpone-

    ment policies and cancellation

policies. If you have any questions or

concerns, this is the time to openly

    discuss them with your caterer.

Its the sweetest wedding task of them all deciding on dessertfor your big day. Tradition calls for a tiered cake with your plastic(un)likeness smacked on top, but brides and bakers are breakingcake molds to create funky and fresh options that add the icing toyour wedding. Take in all the options, work with a pro to make itcustom and whatever you do, dont miss out on any tasting!

    Cake

What first? Think about the rest of yourwedding. Your dessert should match your day,so take everything into account. If you have apaisley themed wedding at an indoorreception venue, a large tiered cake withpaisley fondant would make a beautiful roomcenterpiece. If your day is going to be moreprincess pink, maybe youve considered acupcake castle tower. A casual outdoorwedding is the perfect venue for a table oftasty and colorful candies or make-your-ownice cream sundaes. Did you meet at abaseball game? Order up a baseball stadium-shaped cake, complete with you two lovebirdsin the stands! Do you share an interest suchas running? Ask around for bakers who couldmake a replica cake of your running shoestied together at the laces. Wedding cakes anddesserts are one of the latest weddingdesigns to start challenging convention, sobakeries are always looking to keep up withthe latest trends and really customize yourdessert. So, if you have a sweet idea, findsomeone who can work with it.

Book Early! Demand for customized andintricate wedding desserts mean bakeries fillup quick for wedding weekends. It`s safe tohave something booked six months inadvance, especially if you`re getting marriedduring high season. But don`t worry thisdoesn`t mean you have to know exactly whatyou want so far ahead of time. First, shoparound in general for bakeries, and when youfind one you think can satisfy your needs fortaste, quantity, efficiency and personality, book a date. Then, you can really work with apro to determine exactly what it is you want.

Sohow do I find the bakery? Trustingyour gut is always sound advice, especially sowhen it comes to a food decision! Any dessert

should be delicious, so your tasting isimportant. Make sure you sample all theyhave to offer that interests you. But since thisisn`t an ordinary dessert you`re ordering, make sure youre comfortable with theefficiency and professionalism of the bakeryas well. They should return your calls and e-mails on time, be flexible with you and yourneeds, be willing to customize your dessert, befamiliar with your reception venue andguarantee an on-time dessert, including ofcourse set-up, delivery, and clean-up ifnecessary. You dont want to be worryingabout if your cake is going to show up on yourbig day. As with every wedding decision youmake, don`t be afraid to switch bakeries ormake demands if you don`t feel comfortablewith the service youre receiving.

And the cost Cakes are typically pricedby the slice, which is generally anywhere from$1.50 to $6.50 per slice, depending on thestyle, ingredients, size and decorating. Yourreception site or caterer may also charge aplating fee as well, often $.50 to $1.50 per

person, to cut and serve the cake. Ask aboutthis, and if there is a plating charge see if itsnegotiable.

Cutting the Cake. Most likely your bakerwill provide tips for you and your new spouseto accomplish the time-honored task ofcutting the cake with ease. Plan ahead tohave your cake knife and lifter engraved ordecorated with ribbons or fresh flowers.Traditionally, the bride grasps the knife withher right hand and the groom covers her handwith his. Together, the couple glides the knifeinto the delicious masterpiece whileflashbulbs pop.

Anniversary cakes. Some bakeries offeranniversary cakes as part of their bridalpackages. Instead of having to freeze the toplayer of your wedding cake (which doesntalways freeze well, or taste that great a yearlater), the bakery will make you a fresh cake, often in the same style and flavor as yourwedding cake, for your one-year anniversary.

Centerpiece cakes. Pull double duty anduse a beautiful wedding cake as thecenterpiece for each of your tables. Someambitious newlyweds stop at each table to cutand serve their guests the cake, which is abeautiful idea, but depending on thetimetable and the number of tables this wontwork for everyone.

Cupcake Tower. Individual cupcakes arefun, the perfect serving size and allow for allkinds of decorating freedom you might nothave with a traditional cake. Cupcakearrangements could be anything from a towerthat resembles a traditional tiered cake tosomething more inventive such asmismatched layers of different coloredcupcakes over decorated shelves.

Make-Your-Own-Sundae! Who doesntlove an ice cream sundae? Think of everytopping you can, and then some, then let yourguests run wild. Perfect for an outdoorsummer wedding or one with lots of children, your guests will be craving this at everywedding they attend after yours. The make-your-own theme can also be popular with thecupcakes, if you provide a few types offrostings and toppings.

    The GownThe Gown

6 easy steps to the gown of your dreams

Ahhhh The Dress. Your wedding gown is probably the most expensive, most scrutinized, mostphotographed piece of clothing youll ever buy. No pressure, right? For many women, shoppingfor their wedding dress is the highlight of the wedding planning experience, but for some, it canbe quite stressful. In the succinct words of one harried bride, no one tells you how stressfuldress shopping can be! Hopefully the tips shared here will help you have a pleasurableshopping experience.

One: Shop early.Ideally, start 8-12 months before the wedding. If youhave less time than this, thats fine too, but starting asearly as possible will make the whole experience lessstressful and pressured. Also, in the unlikely event thata problem arises, you will have more time to solve it.Another tip about when to shop: bridal salons arebusiest from January through April, and Saturday istheir busiest day. If its possible for you to shop on aweekday, youll probably find it to be a more leisurely, relaxing experience. Be sure to make an appointment,if required, to ensure one-on-one service while yourethere.

Two: Expect great service. Most negative experiences revolve around service. Ifyoure not happy with the service youre getting, move on. Also, your idea of great service may bequite different from another brides idea. Twobrides-to-be had very different reactions to thesame bridal salon: one loved the attentive, veryinvolved service, and the other felt it was tooconfining and restrictive. So its not always aboutgood versus bad service, but also about the type ofservice with which YOU are most comfortable.

Three: Remain open-minded.In one survey, 40% of brides indicated that they ended up with a dress style completelydifferent than what they had planned on buying. It is so important to try on a variety of dressstyles, to see how they look on your body type, and to see how you feel in each of them. Be open-minded to the suggestions of your sales consultant they have a lot of experience to offer! Also,a number of brides have found that when they saw the dress on the hanger, they didnt care forit, but once they tried it on, it was The Dress.

    Brid

    al G

    ow

    ns

  • www.PremierBrideIdaho.com{ 32 }

Six: Get every detail in writing.Dont leave the salon without a piece of paperthat outlines every single detail, including thecolor, size, and style ordered, the deposit paid, and the estimated date of arrival. Two to threeweeks after you order your dress, call thesalon and verify that your dress was ordered, and that the estimated date of arrival has notchanged. The bottom line is, if youre having a stressfultime shopping for your wedding dress, stopwhat youre currently doing and makechanges: visit a different salon, try a differenttime of the week, or bring different peoplewith you. Or, just take a breather fromshopping for a while! And remember, findingyour dress is like finding your soul mate:sometimes they reveal themselves to usquickly and easily, sometimes they are morechallenging to find, but we always find themin the end, and its always worth the wait.

Four: Be clear about your budget.Save yourself time and heartache, and beupfront about what your budget is not onlywith yourself, but also with your salesconsultant. How stressful to find a dress youlove, and discover its hundreds of dollarsmore than you planned to spend. Whateveryour budget is, if you keep looking you WILLfind a dress you love within it. And dontforget about accessories and alterations! These two items can add up to a big part ofyour wedding attire budget.

Five: Bring one or two supportivepeople with you.A large group of differing opinions can beoverwhelming, so its best to keep theentourage to a minimum. On the other hand, having a couple supportive, helpful peoplewith you can provide valuable feedback andsuggestions. Do whatever works for you, andwhat feels most comfortable.

    { 44 }

Photography is simply not a componen

t of your wedding planning to treat

lightly! Invest the time, attention and

budget necessary to ensure that your

wedding memories will be preserved f

    or the future.

    WHATS YOUR STYLE?

Start by determining which style of we

dding photography is right for you

and your fianc. Here are brief descript

ions of the three main styles:

    Formal or traditional

This style produces color, posed port

raits of you and your groom, your

wedding party, and your families, alon

g with all of the traditional wedding

moments such as the cake cutting and

    bouquet/garter toss.

    Photojournalistic

This style is a popular trend in weddin

g photography, and it means your

photographer will be shooting your we

dding as if its a news event, capturing

hundreds of candid moments on film.

These photographers tend to use more

black & white film, for a classic, timel

    ess and emotional effect.

    Artistic

Artistic photographers use a variety of

special effects to create a dramatic,

one-of-a-kind piece of art. Effects co

    uld include double exposures, hand

tinting, special borders and much more

    .

Most photographers offer a blend of

two or more styles, but tend to

specialize in, and focus on, just one. If y

ou like the photojournalistic style, but

want some posed formal portraits to

showcase your families or the days

    special moments, find a photographer

    that can comfortably do both.

So which style is right for you? The f

irst step is to think about the end

product: What is most important to yo

u, to have after your wedding? Do you

definitely want to have beautiful, tim

eless, color portraits of you and your

groom that you can elegantly frame an

d display? Do you want a large number

of candid, heartfelt moments many c

aptured in black & white, to document

your day? Are you envisioning a one-o

f-a-kind, artistic piece to hang on your

wall after the wedding that incorpora

tes one or more images from the big

    event?

There is simply no better way to capture

    and preserve the memories of

your special day than with a collection of b

    eautiful photographs that not

only document the days events, but also

    capture the emotions and spirit

    of your wedding.

To help you, take a look at friendswedding albums, surf aroundprofessional photographers web sites, clip photos from magazines ofphotography that moves you, and spendsome time in photographers booths atwedding shows. All of this research willhelp you zero in on what style ofphotography you seem drawn to, andultimately, which one you want to usefor your wedding.

HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Once youve established the stylethat is best for you, its time to find aprofessional photographer that meetsyour needs. Start the process bycollecting referrals from friends, reviewing helpful resources like PremierBride, attending bridal shows andsurfing the Internet. Create a short list of

potential photographers that specializein the style you desire, based on theirwork and your budget, and set up an in-person or phone consultation with them.

Your goal at this consultation is toevaluate three main areas:

    1. Do you like their work? Be sureto see complete wedding albums alongwith individual photos, to get the bestidea of the end product you can expectto receive. Also, be very sure that youknow exactly WHO will be shootingYOUR wedding and view their work, assome larger studios have more than onephotographer.

    2. Do your personalities mesh? Ofall your wedding vendors, thephotographer is the one vendor withwhom you will spend a good deal oftime on your wedding day. You want tofeel comfortable with this person! Evenif he or she is a great photographer, if

y your personalities just dont click youmay want to keep looking.

    3. Do they fit your budget? Its socritical to have a budget amount in mindbefore looking for a photographer, sothat you can feel confident that the oneyouve decided on, and love, also meetsyour financial requirements.

THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF APHOTOGRAPHY PACKAGE

As youre selecting your photo-grapher, it may help to be aware of thevarious elements generally included inwedding photography packages. Mostphotographers also offer these elementsa la carte, or can create a custompackage that specifically meets yourneeds so be sure to ask.

Bride & Grooms AlbumThere are a wide variety of wedding

albums available today, and they vary insize, color, material, construction andprice. When comparing differentphotographers bride & groom albums,be sure youre noting the quantity ofphotos and in what sizes, to make sureyoure comparing apples to apples.

Parents albumsThe parents albums are smaller

versions of the bride & groom album, and have traditionally included abouttwenty 5x7 photographs. Photos shouldbe carefully selected for each family, tocreate two (or more) custom familyalbums.

Extra printsYou will probably want to order extra

photographs in addition to the mainalbum and parents albums, for yourselfor your parents to have some framedportraits at home, for members of thewedding party, and for other close

  • www.PremierBrideIdaho.com{ 50 }

friends and family members. Dontunderestimate how many prints youwill want after the wedding, as thiswill definitely impact your budget.

    ProofsAsk your photographer how

many proofs you will get, and inwhat format. They may be providedas small photos, in digital format, onthe Internet, or on contact sheets.

Engagement photographThis is a posed portrait of the

newly engaged couple, which can besent to newspapers with informationannouncing your engagement. Youmay also choose to put a framedengagement photo by the guest bookat your reception.

Ask the Right QuestionsYour photographers personality is as important astheir skill youll be spending lots of time withthem on your wedding day! Will you be taking the pictures? If not, can Imeet the person who will be taking the pictures? How long have you been shooting weddings? What do your photography packages include? What style of photography do you specialize in? Have you photographed at my ceremony andreception location before? How many other weddings do you have on thisdate? How long can you stay? Do you offer online ordering for my guests? When will proofs be ready? How long can wekeep them? Can we purchase negatives or order additionalprints later? What happens if you are sick or have an emer-gency on my wedding day? How far in advance must I book your services? What is your cancellation policy? Is a deposit required? If so, when and howmuch?

Add a seasoned photographer to your side on yourwedding day you are sure to score high on the photogenic scale.Hiring the right vendors will also allow you to relax and be morecomfortable which always makes for better pictures. Ultimately themost beautiful quality in a woman is her gentle and gracious spiritwhich is my joy to capture and preserve throughout the weddingday."

The most radiant and stunning photos I get of my brides are whenthey are relaxed and just enjoying the moment. The most beautifulbride smiles at all the people & activities that surround her andlaughs at all the little (or big) mishaps. None of it is worth gettingstressed about because today she marries her prince! Let yourhappiness shine through and remember to slow down and absorbevery moment of your day. The beauty that comes from withinshines the brightest... even in photographs!.

Jenny CollinsJ. A. Blake Photography 208.989.8032

A bride is beautiful when she can be her authentic self. When sheis given the space to honestly and openly express who she truly isand can share that with her groom and others around her, theinner beauty will come pouring out and will be shared on theoutside. This requires the bride to open up parts of herself shemay not be used to sharing and to trust the photographer tocapture those beautiful moments, even if it means doing somethingunique or different to create something extraordinary.

The joy andexcitement of a wedding day gives every bride a happy glow. Butthose that take the time to enjoy their new spouse, focus on thelove they are feeling and take in the details always appear partic-ularly beautiful."

For couples belonging to the samereligious organization, finding a clergyperson is relatively easy, but for coupleswith different religious backgrounds, finding someone to fill this importantrole for your wedding may require amore diligent search.

Before you begin, take time toexamine how you and your fianc

envision the ceremony. Are therereligious customs or traditions thateither of you feel strongly aboutincorporating? Do you want to exchangetraditional vows, or will you write yourown?

Having a clear-cut picture of theceremony you would like to have willhelp to narrow the selection of clergy.

With the wedding as a specificincentive, now is the time to adopt ahealthy, active attitude for life. The keyis to find some physical activity that yougenuinely enjoy, and do whatever ittakes to work it into your life on aconsistent and regular basis. What doyou like to do? Do you enjoy classes orworking out at home? If you enjoy whatyou are doing, the chances are much,

much greater that youll find the timeand stick with it. Consider hiring apersonal trainer, they can craft the mostefficient workout for you and your goalslike having strong, lean arms andshoulders for your strapless weddingdress.

Healthy eatingWe all know the obvious: eat more

fruits, vegetables, whole grains, leanproteins and healthy fats, and eat lessfast food, processed foods, high fructosecorn syrup, white sugar, white flour, andunhealthy fats. Following are two tips toadopting a healthy approach to eating:One, change one thing at a time, until itbecomes a habit. For example, decide togive up soda completely and switch towater. Dont worry about making otherchanges until this feels routine, thenmake another change in your eating andstick with it until it feels routine, and soon. Two, change your attitude towardsfood. In America, were all busy, andwere all about convenience. In general, eating healthy is not nearly as"convenient" as eating unhealthy Ittakes planning ahead, more foodpreparation, shopping in multiplelocations or more frequently, eliminatingfast food, etc. If your health is importantto you, just adopt the attitude that itsworth the time, and make it a priority.Involve your fianc and make the timeyou shop for food and prepare mealsquality "together time" where you canenjoy each others company and shareyour day.

A smile is the universal sign of joy andcongeniality. When we have teeth thatmake us self-conscious, it interferes withour desire to smile. There are twoanswers to this problem: either smileanyway, or repair the smile. While any-one looks better with a smile no matterwhat the condition of their teeth, it canbe much more fun if you are proud ofyour smile.

Veneers are a way to correct crooked, stained or otherwise unsightly teeth. Aveneer is a little shell of porcelain thatbonds to the front of the tooth. Some-times simple bonding of a compositetooth-colored filling material canaccomplish a limited task. In any case, the smile is improved, and people canchange their whole demeanor if they areno longer afraid to smile.

Different modifications to porcelainhave overcome problems with strength, abrasiveness, accuracy, appearance, etc.Dentists are now successfully restoring

broken-down teeth with all-porcelaincrowns and onlays that lookindistinguishable from natural teeth andhave great longevity. All-porcelainrestorations seem to have cementedtheir place in the dentists repertoire.

One way to brighten your smileinexpensively is to bleach. Mostbleaching systems contain hydrogenperoxide or carbamide peroxide in someconcentration. This removes stain fromtiny cracks and fissures in the enamel ofthe tooth. Dentists can prepare a custombleach tray with a higher concentrationof the active ingredient. Finally in-officebleaching can be performed by thedentist. This requires isolation of theteeth with a thin sheet of rubber and ahigh concentration of the peroxide. Oftenthe teeth are sensitive to temperatureafterward and the cost is significantlyhigher. Bleaching provides a safe andfairly simple way of improving theappearance of a smile.

For You and Your Wedding Party The first item of consideration will be

the bridal bouquet, since all other floralarrangements will take their cue fromthis piece. It not only sets the tone forthe overall floral scheme but alsoprovides the perfect opportunity for youto bring your own style and personalityto the forefront.

The CeremonyIf youre on a budget, its useful to

reuse ceremony flowers at the receptionsite. Ceremony arrange-ments areusually ideal for buffet, gift and headtables if using them twice is an option.

Reception Arrangements There is a vast array of options for

reception centerpieces: elegant vasesfilled with cut flowers; toweringcandelabras; topiaries; or simple rosepetals scattered around flickeringcandles. Use your imagination to designone-of-a-kind centerpieces that expressyour style. Keep in mind that the heightof the arrangements should not interferewith the ability of guests to conversewith each other. They should either below enough to talk over or high enoughto talk under. Placing the weddingpartys bouquets at equal intervals at thehead table also provides excellentdecoration.

Share your ideas with your floraldesigner, who can help you refine themto create a memorable impression thatwont soon be forgotten by you or yourguests.

    Find Out Why

Getting married is hard work. All thatintricate planning and coordinating isvery demanding and of course you'llwant to take your wedding day off. Thatalone is the most compelling reason tohire a master of ceremonies.

Brides traditionally engage DJs toemcee their wedding reception whilealso providing a wide variety of music atthe same time. But even if you book theRolling Stones, they may not know NewYork, New York. A less obvious benefitof hiring an emcee is the personal touchhe will impart to duties you won't haveto deal with.

A veteran wedding DJ will smoothlyline up your wedding party andintroduce them. He'll arrange to havechampagne poured before the toastand keep a jittery best man on an evenand eloquent keel. He'll emcee yourcake-cutting and bouquet-throwing atthe appropriate times. In short, he'llkeep the show running smoothly whileyou're basking in the spotlight.

The key qualification is experience, not price. Most DJs cost less than thehors doeuvres, though they'reremembered far longer.

It's not out of line to ask forreferences, though, he'll certainly selectsatisfied clients. The best idea is toarrange a meeting. Talk your DJ throughhis conception of your reception andsee how your ideas mesh. Ask aboutmusical selections, old and new. Don'tbe dismayed if he doesn't have obscuresongs, but gauge his willingness totrack them down. Ask about lights andsound (the best systems sound superbat background volume). Mostimportantly, will he be a lump behind theturntables? Or will he be out frontworking hard, involving your guests indancing after dinner?

    the first impressionthe perfect invitation

When your guests receive theirwedding invitation, they willimmediately form an impression of theceremony to come. That is whyselecting the invitation--the paper, thestyle, the wording--is an important firststep in your wedding plans.

Experienced stationers are your bestguide, and their advice is available at nocharge when you purchase yourinvitations in their store. Not only dostationers offer assistance on theinvitations, but they can also providehelpful hints on when to order and mailthem while also determining properpostage budgeting and a myriad ofother details.

Take time to select your invitationsand put thought into the decision. Feelthe paper samples. What impression dothey give? Understated elegance? Fun?Whimsical? Romantic?

An engraved invitation is distinctiveand elegant; however, thermographyprinting is less costly and veryacceptable. Your stationer will know theetiquette for proper wording, includingunusual situations such as divorcedparents, second marriages, professionaltitles, religious customs, and so on.Envelopes should be hand addressed inblack or charcoal gray ink. You may alsochoose professional hand calligraphy oran automated calligraphy machine forthe envelopes.

To determine how many invitationsto order, count each couple and singleguest, each attendant, parents, familyand clergy. Order extra invitations tohandle surprises and extra envelopesfor addressing mistakes. Be certain topre-stamp reply cards, weigh thecomplete invitation to ensure correctpostage and remember to selectattractive stamps.
