Thanksgiving for Baptism and the Communion of Saints

Prayer of the Day Deaconess Rebecca West-Estell

WORDGod speaks to us through Scripture, proclamation, song, and prayer.

Reading: Jeremiah 31:1-6At that time, declares the LORD,    I will be the God of all the families of Israel,        and they will be my people.2 The LORD proclaims:The people who survived the sword    found grace in the wilderness. As Israel searched for a place of rest,3     the LORD appeared to them from a distance: I have loved you with a love that lasts forever.

3

Page 4: Prelude - glenwoodlc.netglenwoodlc.net/.../assets/docs/04_12_20_Easter_bulletin.1…  · Web view: The Trumpet Shall Sound . Handel. Christian Longberry, tenor and Joe Gozdowski,

And so with unfailing love,        I have drawn you to myself. 4 Again, I will build you up,    and you will be rebuilt, virgin Israel.Again, you will play your tambourines    and dance with joy.5 Again, you will plant vineyards    on the hills of Samaria;    farmers will plant and then enjoy the harvests.6 The time will come when    the watchmen shout from        the highlands of Ephraim:“Get ready! We’re going up to Zion    to the LORD our God!”

Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24P:

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for | he is good;* his mercy en- | dures forever.

2 Let Israel | now proclaim,* "His mercy en- | dures forever."

14 The LORD is my strength | and my song,* and he has become | my salvation.

15 There is a sound of exulta- | tion and victory* in the tents | of the righteous:

16 "The right hand of the | LORD has triumphed!* The right hand of the LORD is exalted! The right hand of the | LORD has triumphed!"

4

Page 5: Prelude - glenwoodlc.netglenwoodlc.net/.../assets/docs/04_12_20_Easter_bulletin.1…  · Web view: The Trumpet Shall Sound . Handel. Christian Longberry, tenor and Joe Gozdowski,

17 I shall not | die, but live,* and declare the works | of the LORD.

18 The LORD has pun- | ished me sorely,* but he did not hand me o- | ver to death.

19 Open for me the | gates of righteousness;* I will enter them; I will offer thanks | to the LORD.

20 "This is the gate | of the LORD;* he who is right- | eous may enter."

21 I will give thanks to you, for you | answered me* and have become | my salvation.

22 The same stone which the build- | ers rejected* has become the chief | cornerstone.

23 This is | the LORD's doing,* and it is marvelous | in our eyes.

24 On this day the | LORD has acted;* we will rejoice and be | glad in it.

Reading: Acts 10:34-4334 Peter said, “I really am learning that God doesn’t show partiality to one group of people over another. 35 Rather, in every nation, whoever worships him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 This is the message of peace he sent to the Israelites by proclaiming the good news through Jesus Christ: He is Lord of all! 37 You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism John preached. 38 You know about Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and endowed with power. Jesus traveled around doing good and healing everyone oppressed by the devil because God was with him. 39 We are witnesses of

5

everything he did, both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him up on the third day and allowed him to be seen, 41 not by everyone but by us. We are witnesses whom God chose beforehand, who ate and drank with him after God raised him from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Gospel AcclamationWOV #612 Halle, Halle, HallelujahHalle, halle, hallelujah!Halle, halle, hallelujah!Halle, halle, hallelujah!Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Gospel Reading: Matthew 28:1-10 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb. 2 Look, there was a great earthquake, for an angel from the Lord came down from heaven. Coming to the stone, he rolled it away and sat on it. 3 Now his face was like lightning and his clothes as white as snow. 4 The guards were so terrified of him that they shook with fear and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6 He isn’t here, because he’s been raised from the dead, just as he said. Come, see the place

6

where they laid him. 7 Now hurry, go and tell his disciples, ‘He’s been raised from the dead. He’s going on ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there.’ I’ve given the message to you.”8 With great fear and excitement, they hurried away from the tomb and ran to tell his disciples. 9 But Jesus met them and greeted them. They came and grabbed his feet and worshipped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Go and tell my brothers that I am going into Galilee. They will see me there.”

ContemplationP: Thy word is a lamp to my feet,C: And a light to my path. P: This is your time for prayer, reflection on the Scriptures, or

sitting in stillness with God; this is your time for contemplation.

Sermon: Pastor Chris Hanley “Jesus is risen and we shall arise”

Special Music: The Trumpet Shall Sound HandelChristian Longberry, tenor and Joe Gozdowski, trumpet

Text: Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. The trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 1 Corinthians 15:51-53

The Immigrant Apostles’ Creed and Dreamers’ Litany:Long ago, followers of Jesus attempted to put into words the story that had been shared with them as they prepared new students of Jesus for Baptism. We speak these words, handed down through the centuries by our ancestors in faith, authenticated by the Scriptures, adapted to express the living faith of the church, trusting in their witness and in the presence of God among us.

I believe in Almighty God,who guided the people in exile and in exodus, the God of Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon, the God of foreigners and immigrants.I believe in Jesus Christ, a displaced Galilean, who was born away from his people and his home, who fled his country with his parents when his life was in danger. When he returned to his own countryhe suffered under the oppression of Pontius Pilate, the servant of a foreign power.Jesus was persecuted, beaten, tortured, and unjustly condemned to death. But on the third day Jesus rose from the dead, not as a scorned foreigner but to offer us citizenship in God’s kingdom.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the eternal immigrant from God’s kingdom among us,who speaks all languages, lives in all countries, and reunites all races.

8

Page 9: Prelude - glenwoodlc.netglenwoodlc.net/.../assets/docs/04_12_20_Easter_bulletin.1…  · Web view: The Trumpet Shall Sound . Handel. Christian Longberry, tenor and Joe Gozdowski,

I believe that the Church is the secure home for foreigners and for all believers.I believe that the communion of saints begins when we embrace all God’s people in all their diversity.I believe in forgiveness, which makes us all equal before God, and in reconciliation, which heals our brokenness.I believe that in the ResurrectionGod will unite us as one peoplein which all are distinct and all are alike at the same time.I believe in life eternal, in which no one will be foreignerbut all will be citizens of the kingdom where God reigns forever and ever. Amen. The Immigrant’s Apostles’ Creed was written by Rev. Jose Luis Casal, the director of Presbyterian World Mission. He is an immigrant to the USA from Cuba.

Page 13: Prelude - glenwoodlc.netglenwoodlc.net/.../assets/docs/04_12_20_Easter_bulletin.1…  · Web view: The Trumpet Shall Sound . Handel. Christian Longberry, tenor and Joe Gozdowski,

P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should give thanks to You, merciful God, at all times and in all places, wherever we might be this morning. You call your people to rejoice today in the Resurrection and to await with eagerness that glorious day when we might come together once more, having come through this Passover of illness, when we may have the joy of seeing Your love in one another’s face. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

13

Page 14: Prelude - glenwoodlc.netglenwoodlc.net/.../assets/docs/04_12_20_Easter_bulletin.1…  · Web view: The Trumpet Shall Sound . Handel. Christian Longberry, tenor and Joe Gozdowski,

Reading 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, 3323 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.

P: We will wait to eat until we eat at the table together, in safety, on the day when we will celebrate face to face God’s raising us to new life.

Today, Lord, and every day, remember us in your kingdom and teach us how to pray:
