Being pregnant is a wonderful experience. However, it’s not always an easy one. Lots of major changes are happening with your body, and your hair is not missing out on the fun. It can thin out or thicken. To help us fight the thinning, the loss, or the extra hair growth, we need to understand why it happens and what can we do to combat the problem.

One of the main reason why your hair losses during pregnancy is the change in your hormones.

Hormones have a lot of effects on your hair. When there’s an increase amount of estrogen moving through your body, it is more likely that your hair begins to grow faster and thicker. The estrogen can also allow the metabolism to move faster, providing the body with extra nutrients, which will increase the hair growth. Especially, when the estrogen is moving into the hair follicles

So what happens when the opposite happens and your hair is thinning out instead? This is actually a way that your body is telling you that you are not getting enough nutrients. Usually, this is the result of your body not producing the amount of estrogens it needs during the pregnancy. It usually occurs in the first trimester during the morning sickness and nausea. If this happens, it is very important to make sure that you are getting the right amounts of nutrients needed in order for your body to stay balanced

Apart from the loss or increase in the amount of hair, you might notice that the type of hair itself might also change. All of the sudden, your hair can go from straight to curly, or the opposite. This again, is the result of the hormone changes in your body. The hormone increase can move into the cortex. This is where the hair begins to grow, and add more texture to it. Fortunately, or unfortunately, this will not change back to normal after pregnancy.

After the birth of the baby, usually in the first 3 – 6 months after a pregnancy, you might also realize that the same changes might occur. This is as expected and is very normal after a pregnancy. It is the result of the estrogen level going back to normal and slowing down all the extra nutrients that are moving around your body.
