We will read Chapters 24 and 25 and briefly look at Freak’s Dictionary and the afterword of the book. We will then re-write the ending to the book.The Predication Strategy Test: 45 minutes: You will answer four questions about four short paragraphs. To answer the first three questions for each paragraph you will scan the paragraph quickly. You won’t read it word for word. Don’t worry. These questions can be answered without reading the whole story. Once you have answered these questions, you will read the paragraph and answer the fourth question. Practice Passage

A. Before You Read: What word clues can you identify in the passage below?

The day was cold and windy. Beth had been skating on the frozen pond for nearly an hour. Suddenly she felt a cramp in her left leg. She was nearly 50 yards from the shore, but she had to stop. After a few minutes she could skate again.

Scanning this paragraph, I notice that the word pond is used. I also see the word frozen and cramp. So, I would write these words down as “word clues” for Question A.

B. Before You Read: What do you already know about the topic suggested by the word clues?The day was cold and windy. Beth had been skating on the frozen pond for nearly an hour. Suddenly she felt a cramp in her left leg. She was nearly 50 yards from the shore, but she had to stop. After a few minutes she could skate again.

Well, I already know that if a pond is frozen, it is dangerous to walk on it. I also know that when it is cold, I sometimes get cramps.

C. Before You Read: What do you predict the passage will be mostly about?

Well, since I saw the words pond, frozen, and cramp, and since I already know that it is dangerous to walk on or play on frozen ponds and you sometimes can get cramps in the cold, I predict that this passage will mostly be about doing something on a frozen pond and getting a cramp.

Prediction Pretest

You will now answer the questions for the next four passages just as I did with the Practice Examples. Read Question A, then scan the paragraph to answer the question. The do the same thing for Questions B and C. Once you have read Question C, read the passage and answer Question D.

You will not be timed on this activity, but you should complete it in about 30 minutes. Raise your hand when you are done, and I will collect your test booklet.

Once you finish the test, work on Vocabulary Set 3. We have done this already; however, no one reached mastery on the test, therefore, we need to redo it. If you need another copy of Set 2, it is on the desk.

Wrap-Up 5 Minutes

Today we did a warm-up about taking responsibility for your own actions. We also finished reading Freak the Mighty, making predictions and using context clues to help use figure out the meanings of new words. We did a pretest to see how good we already are at making predictions. We also continued to work on vocabulary Set 2 using the 7 Step Vocabulary Process. The next class period, we will start reading a new novel, The Bully. We will also start learning about the Prediction Strategy and how to use it to help us become better readers. We will also make a commitment to learn the Prediction Strategy. Finally, we will continue to use the 7-Step Vocabulary Process on Set 2 words.

Exit Ticket 1. Take out a sheet of paper and label it Exit Ticket 11/08/12. Make

sure you put your name and today’s date on it. Then answer these questions. Turn you paper in to me, one at a time, when you are finished. Then quietly clean up around your areas, put your binders away, get your book bags, and wait quietly for dismissal.
