The Hospital:

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool is one of only four stand-alone children’s hospitals in the UK. We moved into a purpose built brand new ‘Alder Hey in the Park’ in October 2015. Every year we care for over 270,000 children, young people and their families and we lead research into children’s medicines, infection, inflammation and oncology. We are a Centre of Excellence for cancer, as well as spinal, heart and brain conditions, muscular dystrophy and the first UK Centre of Excellence for childhood lupus. We are a Department of Health Centre for head and face surgery and one of four national centres for childhood epilepsy surgery (a joint service with the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital). We also have Europe’s first intra-operative 3-T MRI scanner which is a pioneering technology for neurosurgery. Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust offers an excellent pre-registration training programme which provides our trainees with all the necessary skills and expertise to register as confident and competent pharmacists. The Pharmacy Department:

The Pharmacy department employs approximately 70 staff and provides a range of specialist services and is divided into several areas: in-patient/out-patient dispensaries, clinical services and “Near Patient Pharmacy”, Medicines Information Unit, Aseptic Services Unit, Clinical Trials Unit and our purchasing and stores department. As a specialist paediatric hospital we provide a unique dispensing service individualised to the patient,

often requiring us to prepare and dispense extemporaneously prepared products.

The Training Programme: Pre-registration training at Alder Hey is well structured and highly organised with a strong emphasis on clinical pharmacy. You will rotate through the various areas in pharmacy: clinical ward services/“Near Patient Pharmacy”, Medicines Information Unit, Aseptic Services Unit and our dispensaries. As a pre-registration trainee you will have full support and guidance from an experienced tutor. You will also be supported on a daily basis by our excellent team of highly skilled and motivated pharmacists and technical staff. You will attend a comprehensive series of local and regional pre-registration study days and protected time is given to complete an audit project. Approximately 8 weeks will be spent in other Merseyside hospital trusts/on a community placement to ensure that your training programme is well rounded and provides an excellent start to your career as a pharmacist in any sector.

You will have the opportunity to work with innovative pharmacists developing new and exciting roles. We have many highly specialist pharmacists working in multi-disciplinary teams as independent prescribers in areas such as Cardiology, Renal, Rheumatology, HIV, Hematology, Admissions, ITU and Elderly Care. The department plays an active role in research; the expanding number of clinical trials is managed by a dedicated clinical trials pharmacist and technician. We have an established electronic prescribing system, e-TTOs, automated dispensing systems in A&E and a 'Rowa robot' which can also be accessed for remote dispensing out of hours. Pre-registration tutors are responsible for coordinating the training year along with an established team of pharmacists to enable a fully structured training programme, including rotational ward visits. There are in-house opportunities to attain all GPhC performance standards and trainees are supported throughout the year in preparation for the GPhC exam. We organise weekly tutorials including sessions on calculations, weekly departmental educational meetings, and regional/local study days to supplement knowledge. Cross-sector experience in community and mental health is also included. Pre-registration trainees are encouraged to undertake training in medicines reconciliation, counselling, audit, medicines management and accuracy checking and have shared responsibility for a ward with a senior pharmacist towards the end of the training year to ease into the role of a clinical pharmacist. “If you think you need to go to a teaching hospital with advanced clinical pharmacy roles, or with electronic prescribing and automation, then come and have a look at Chester and we’ll prove you wrong!”

Medicines management training is provided which includes Patients Own Medicine Assessment (POM's), Medicines Reconciliation, Accuracy Checking Patient Discharge and Counselling. During this training set competencies must be achieved to enable the trainee to support pharmacy services operationally whilst un-der the supervision of a pharmacist. This provides experience the trainee will utilise and rely on after registration. The programme also contains specialist training sessions every two weeks on specific clinical subjects. Pre-registration Pharmacists attend clinical meetings, present case studies and their audit project with the goal of publishing their work. Stockport NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital services across Stockport and the High Peak. Stepping Hill is a large district general hospital. We are forward-thinking, and we have implemented electronic prescribing across all adult areas. As an associate teaching hospital, we have a strong emphasis on education and training.

The Pharmacy Department: We are a friendly, supportive department, with over 30 pharmacists. Many of our staff are specialists in their fields, and many are non-medical prescribers. This makes for an ideal environment to train as a pre-registration pharmacist, where you will be well-supported whilst learning from our experienced staff.

The Training Programme: We have a structured rotational training programme, where each rotation is led by the specialist pharmacist for that area and is supported by a workbook. Trainees meet regularly with their tutor to review their training, and are supported by regular study days. Location: 3 miles south of Stockport centre and about 8 miles south of Manchester centre. Adjacent countryside includes the Peak District and a number of country parks. We are well served by motorway, rail and bus networks.

The RLBUHT offer three pre-registration placements

The Training Bases:

The main centre of the Trust is the 650 bed Royal Liverpool University Hospital (RLUH); services are about to move into a brand new building with an exciting redesign of the way care is delivered. Every patient will have their own en-suite private room and the hospital has been designed to reflect the patient journey. Some time during the year is spent at our Broadgreen site, about 4 miles away in the eastern suburbs of Liverpool. Short rotations are also arranged to see paediatric practice at the Royal Liverpool Children's hospital, and psychiatry and psychogeriatric pharmacy in conjunction with Mersey Care NHS Trust. Graduates are also encouraged to undertake a cross-sector placement.

The new hospital has a decentralised pharmacy service which will evolve further over time. We can offer enthusiastic and motivated graduates a unique experience as our new models of care are implemented. The Hospital and Training Programme: The RLUH is a major teaching hospital with specialities covering the full range of adult medical and surgical practice. It has regional specialisms in infectious diseases, haematology, renal medicine and transplantation, and other conditions. More than 40 pharmacists provide well-embedded clinical care to all directorates, and most are involved in pre-registration pharmacist training by providing clinical attachments in their areas. These clinical attachments are supported with rotations through the dispensary, medicines information and aseptic manufacturing. We encourage a hands-on approach by trainees to prepare them for practice after registration, and attendance at regular meetings within the department and beyond is backed up with more than 30 study days locally outside the hospital. Each pre-registration pharmacist has their own tutor in addition to supervision from rotation leads and the pre-registration manager. Objectives exist for each rotation and clinical attachment. Basic skills are established and then built upon so that by the end of their year graduates are ready to not merely join the Register, but commence work as confident rotational pharmacists in the NHS. The City: Liverpool is a friendly city with a thriving student population and plentiful accommodation at affordable prices. It is well linked by road and rail to the rest of the UK, and to Ireland and Europe via Liverpool John Lennon Airport, a low-cost hub. There are three universities, two cathedrals, and great museums, restaurants and sporting facilities. The countryside of North Wales and the Lake District is not far away. Further Information: For further information or to arrange an informal tour, please contact John Sexton, the Pre-Registration Manager. You are also invited to look at our webpage and further information on http://www.rlbuht.nhs.uk/ The Trust’s webpages are currently being redesigned so please search for “Pharmacy”.

We pride ourselves in offering safe, personal care to all patients and are all dedicated to continuous improvement.

The Training Programme:

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (SRFT) has a well-established pre-registration training programme with trainees integrated into the clinical teams to support both the clinical services of a busy acute trust whilst fulfilling their own learning needs. All trainees complete the in-house medicines reconciliation training and regional accuracy checking programmes, with successful candidates taking on these roles independently. Clinical rotations are undertaken within our clinical teams covering the whole trust, with dedicated time within acute admissions in addition to our specialist areas of Gastrointestinal Failure, Neurosciences, Renal medicine and Dermatology. Rotations are undertaken in Aseptic services, Medicines Information and Palliative Care. The trust has excellent working relationships with both Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation trust and the PCT healthcare group with rotation to both of these organisations for one to two weeks. The SRFT trainees independently organise placements within the trust for both the mental health and community trainees. Recent developments at SRFT include the employment of a large team of Neighbourhood Integrated Practice Pharmacists (NIPPs) working across Salford GP practices and it is envisaged that as these services embed, rotations will also be undertaken with this team. Both clinical audit and project work is undertaken supported by practice based and a university based supervisor. In recent years we have been awarded both best oral presentation and best poster at the regional project event.Trainees attend the Regional Study Day programme and will undertake a mock examination and formative OSCEs. Further local training days are organised where clinical cases are discussed and trainees have the opportunity to support their learning with peer discussion especially in clinical areas that the trust does not offer (e.g. paediatrics, mental health). Trainees are encouraged to participate in training of other healthcare professionals including undergraduate pharmacy students and newly qualified nurses. In house support is by individual tutors with many years’ experience, mentors and weekly professional development meetings alongside pharmacists and technicians. All past trainees have successfully passed the GPhC assessment and many are still working within the department in a variety of roles and grades.
