This month I would like to talk about the greatest helper of them all, The Holy Spirit.. The Holy Spirit is a very practical Helper who assists us in every aspect of our lives. When we pray, He intercedes for us according to the Lord’s will (Rom. 8:26). Because of our limited knowledge or self-centered desires, we sometimes ask for the wrong things, but the Spirit takes our pe-titions and aligns them with the Father’s will. Although we may think our prayer wasn’t answered, in reality, the Holy Spirit just straightened out our requests in order to give us what was best.

God’s Spirit also helps us understand His Word (John 16:13). In fact, no one can comprehend the Bible unless the Spirit il-lumines his thinking. If you come to the Scriptures with a clean heart, a submissive will, and a dependent attitude, He will enlarge your spiritual senses to see the truth and understand His thoughts.

Perhaps one of the Spirit’s most under-appreciated works is His conviction of our sin (vv. 8-11). Although it’s unpleasant and sometimes painful, we should never want Him to stop, because this is the way He gets us back on track after we have strayed. But He doesn’t just point out our wrongs; He also empowers us to do right. True righteousness is achieved only by rely-ing on Him to transform us and carry out His work through us.

Sometimes we don’t realize how much we need the Spirit. Though we ac-knowledge that salvation is accomplished by Christ alone, how many of us feel as if living the Christian life is now up to us? But self-reliance is a recipe for failure. Only when you know you can’t, will you find He can!

A Helper for All Occasions

Bishop William C. & Mother Lelia M. Latta and the Ohio Diocese proudly welcome Presiding Bishop Chief Apostle Cornelius Showell, Elect Lady Au-gust Showell and The International Bible Way

The Ohio Diocese was started under the leadership of Bishop Winfield A. Showell one of the founding fathers of The International Bible Way Church. His commitment to God and Bible Way coupled with his love for the people energized him to make numerous trips to Cleveland and later to Columbus and Toledo to make sure the Diocese was properly established and flourishing. He attend the April and September Diocese meeting faithfully first with District Elder James & Mother Georgia Lee Lampkin in Cleveland. In 1960, Elder William C. Latta came to Colum-bus to pastor and become a past of the Ohio Dioceses. In 1981, Elder William C. Latta was consecrated to the office of Bishop and later was appointed to Diocesan of Ohio.

The Diocese has grown from two churches to sixteen churches. As we continue to grow, we expect great things from the state of Ohio. Our prayers will be with you dur-ing visit. What ever you need, just ask and with the help of the Lord we are there to serve you.

The late Apostle Smallwood E. Williams under the guidance of the Holy Spirit asked Elder William C. Latta to come to Columbus, Ohio to Pastor. We began our first service September 4, 1960 with Elder William C. Latta conducting months of Evangelistic Crusades. In 1969, we remodel the church sanctu-ary shortly after a small electrical fire.

In the late 70s due to the increase in member-ship the church began to look for a larger building, however, we were unable to find a facility large enough to meet our needs; therefore, we decided to build where we were.

May 1980, we had our first Sunday Morning Service in the new Sanctuary. In 2007, we started renovation of our property, which we completed in 2009. September 15, 2012 Apostle Cornelius Show-ell installed Bishop William Latta as Senior Pastor, Elder Timothy Latta as Pastor, and Elder Otis Buck-ner as Assistant Pastor.

The late Apostle Smallwood E. Williams under the guidance of the Holy Spirit asked Elder William C. Latta to come to Columbus, Ohio to Pastor. Bish-op Smallwood E. Williams invested $2000 to secure the property for the church.

The Bible Way Church began its services on Sep-tember 4, 1960 with our Pastor conducting months of Evangelistic Crusades. In the first service, there were only two families, Deacon and Sister Ander-son Gibson and Elder and Sister Bert Thompson, who were already members of the former church. Sister Dollie Trent united with the church at the first service. At the close of the crusades the Lord had given us enough members for the late Mother Mary Wilson (mother of the late Apostle Smallwood Wil-liams) to organize the Missionary Department. Sis-ter Corrine Gibson organized the Adult Choir.

In the fall of 1969, there was a need to remodel the building, but the church did not have the funds to do so; however, that year the church had a small electrical fire, which caused some minor damages to the church, and we received enough money from the insurance company to lower the ceiling. Dea-

con Carey extended the pulpit area, made a com-munion table and two altars. The church raised enough money to purchase padded pews and pul-pit furniture.

Numerically our membership continued to grow until we had outgrown the small church. In the late 70s, we began to look for a larger facility; however, we could not find a building large enough so we decided to build where we were.

Thus, we began the process of purchasing properties in the neighborhood around the church. We purchased four separate properties on the North side of the church, one on the South side, and two lots on Oakley Avenue. We also purchased the Garland building (the green building as we call it) Scotty’s Carry Out on Sullivant Avenue, the Ameri-can Legions Building (Mary Wilson Hall), a lot on

Highland Avenue, and two lots at 438 S. Wheatland Avenue (the Herman House). After we purchased these properties and raised the funds, we selected an architect who made a model of our new church. The late Elder Herman Partridge began and com-pleted the construction our new building.

In 1979, Christmas Eve, we held our first service the incomplete lower auditorium. It was so cold we used big kerosene heaters to heat the place. In May 1980, we had our first Sunday Morning Service in the new Sanctuary. In 2007, we started the renova-tion of our property, which we completed in 2009.

September 15, 2012 Apostle Cornelius Showell installed Bishop William Latta as Senior Pastor, El-der Timothy Latta as Pastor, and Elder Otis Buck-ner as Assistant Pastor. This was the first pastoral change in our 52- year history.

The Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, World Wide, Inc. had its inception in Sep-tember 1957. Bishop Small-wood E. Williams, who at the time was the General Secretary of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith (COOLJC), along with Bishop John S. Beane, Bishop Winfield Showell, Bishop Joseph Moore and Bishop McKinley Williams, withdrew from that organi-zation (along with about 70 churches) and founded a new organization.

Beliefs of the Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ include the inspiration of the Bible as the word of God; salvation made pos-sible only through Jesus; the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues; water baptism by immersion; the pre-millennial second coming of Jesus; the final judgment of the dead; and the establishment of new heavens and a new earth.

Through fifty years of service to the Kingdom of God, the Bible Way organization has emerged as

a strong, vibrant, and growing orga-nization. Churches were founded

throughout the world, and Bishop Williams, a preacher’s

preacher, became one of the most popular national preachers of his time. A very influential social fig-ure, he spoke extensively on racial and social injus-tice and used his pastoral clout to fight for integrity (or integration?) in the Na-

tions’ Capital. His sons in the gospel have inherited his

preaching dynamo, and the name ‘Bible Way’ has become

associated with contemporary Ap-ostolic Pentecostalism with 1st century

power and 21st century relevancy. When Bishop Smallwood E. Williams organized

the Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ In September of 1957, by his side was a young man named Elder Lawrence G. Campbell. Although there were notable signs of his ability and talents, no one could have ever imagined the magnitude of the leader he would become. The Bible Way Church has been enormously blessed with the divine lead-ership of Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell. Through

God’s help, he led Bible Way World Wide for twelve consecutive, successful years to a level that was not witnessed before.

During the 90’s, Bible Way experienced un-precedented growth, seeing its member churches flourish from a group of 125 churches to more than 350 in the United States alone. As a testament to its global reach, Bible Way boasts now more than 250 additional churches in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and the Caribbean. An ever-evolving or-ganization, Bible Way now recognizes and ordains women as deaconesses, ministers, elders, district elders, prophetesses, and pastors.

After 12 years of leadership in the Bible Way World Wide organization, Apostle Campbell’s reign as Chief Apostle and Presiding Bishop culminated on July 21, 2006. In March 2006, Apostle Cornelius Showell, son of one of Bible Way’s Founding Fathers, Bishop Winfield Showell, and succeeding pastor of the 4000-member First Apostolic Faith Church In-ternational, Inc, in Baltimore, MD, was elected as Presiding Bishop and Chief Apostle of The Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, World Wide, Incorporated. Alongside him in leadership are First Vice-Presider, Apostle Floyd Nelson, and Second Vice-Presider, Apostle Caleb McIntosh. The orga-nization is now headquartered in Baltimore, Mary-land and the official name is International Bible Way Church of Jesus Christ, Inc.

Bible Way was born out of a National Pente-costal Ministerial Conference held September 25 - 29, 1957 at the Bible Way Church 1100 New Jersey Avenue NW, Washington, DC.

This Conference was led by Drs. Smallwood E. Williams, John S. Beane, McKinley Williams, Winfield Showell, James I. Clarke, Elder Joseph Moore and others, some of which were former officers of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. This conference was con-vened to consider some mal-administrative prac-tices which were found to be out of line with the New Testament collective leadership as practiced by the Apostles, and the authoritarianism which could no longer be tolerated.

From this Conference, Dr. S.E. Williams was consecrated as Bishop and Presiding Bishop of the

newly formed organization and four outstanding Pastors were consecrated to the Bishopric, namely, Dr. John S. Beane of Petersburg, VA, Dr. McKin-ley Williams of Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Winfield A. Showell, Baltimore, MD and Elder Joseph Moore of Brooklyn, NY. Bishop John S. Holly of the Pen-tecostal Assemblies of the World was the officiant at the ceremonies.

The authenticity and orthodoxy of the Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ World-Wide can be attested as to its validity historically, ex-perimentally and doctrinally. Historically, its spir-itual roots go back to the 1st century AD 30, in the upper room at Jerusalem on the day of Pente-cost, about 9am; the third hour of the memorable feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian Church.

Bishop Smallwood E Williams is revered by this august body as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century He was a modern day Apostle without equal. He was a preacher and an orator of the first magnitude. He was a man before his time, at the vanguard and on the cutting edge of the civ-il rights movement of the sixties and seventies. He was known as a bridge builder and a role model for men of all ages in Christian ministry. During the 34 years of his presidership he almost single-handedly put Bible Way World-Wide on the map of all Christendom. This brief paragraph cannot contain all of the wonderful works done by this mighty man of God. However, it must be stated here that each of the first five Bishops mentioned in this history made their own unique contribu-tions to the success of our great church.
