It’s February already and the groundhog has spoken!!!! October will be here before we know it along with our biennial guild show. I hope you are working on projects that you will enter in the show; are considering entering the Guild challenge; making a few door gifts and boutique items; and thinking about what area[s] you will volunteer to work in at the show. I know, it is a lot to think on, but we all need to pull together to make it another roaring success. There are also exciting speakers and workshops to anticipate and prepare for, so consider those things as well. We are all busy, but isn’t it so rewarding to your soul to have such

a creative passion for making items that bring comfort, love and beauty to recipients? It always does my heart good. If you are new to the Guild, prepare yourself to be busy, busy, busy. Quilt show year is always that way but again, so rewarding. Look over the areas you think might be fun to work at during the show and be ready to volunteer. 2018 Quilt Show News

We will have a QOV presentation in July. Do you have a friend or family member (Veteran) you would like to make a QOV for? Sign-up forms are available at the community service table. Pet beds can be stuffed with any combination of scraps, batting, fleece, or polyester stuffing. Drop off completed beds in the church hallway on meeting day.

Fidget Quilts (Linda Stoynoff): Linda provides kits if you need them or ideas can be found online.Quilts...all sizes, and pillowcases (Deb Long): These are distributed at Ronald McDonald Houses. We also have a selection of fabrics to use to make pillowcases. Just ask!

Community Service

We have a treat for you! Thanks to your generosity and the hard work by the Quilt Show Scraps Committee (and friends), we have a number of lovely fat quarters and great scrap bags already put together. So we thought, with Bonnie Hunter (a.k.a. Scrap Queen) coming to PSQG in June, we should give guild members first crack at these goodies. The decision: At our annual meeting in April, we’ll hold a pre-sale. As usual, Fat Quarters will be 50¢ and our great scrap bags will be $1. Don’t miss this chance to enhance your stash at great prices!

Quilt Show Scrap Team News Yes, it’s 2018, and the quilt

show will be here before we know it. What’s happening this month? We will be showing you the quilt entry forms and a new definitions page that helps clarify certain words and categories. Please think about joining the challenge “Black and White and One” and make a small quilt using a splash of color of your choosing. Hopefully you saw our stunning raffle quilt at the January meeting. You will want to stock up on tickets

to sell to your friends and family so that someone you know will win it. We will continue to accept your wonderful donations of items for the boutique and raffle baskets plus your unwanted scraps, books, patterns, and magazines (2007 or later). Thank you! You can use some of these cold and snowy days to finish a beautiful quilt (or three) to enter into the show!

Please come join us for the annual banquet at Villa Olivia in Bartett, IL. The cost is $35 for a very delicious meal and a great speaker, too. You are welcome to come alone or as a group. No one will be left out; seats are assigned so that everyone will have a seat with another member, friend, or soon-to-be new friends. Come and meet fellow quilters and PSQG members!

Come to the meeting in February for the complete menu, which offers a beef, chicken or vegetarian meal choice. And we never forget dessert! We will start taking orders and sign ups in March. Have any questions? Please contact Diane Moore at (847)269-7058 or [email protected]

Come One, Come All to the Annual Prairie Star Quilters Guild Banquet

Puzzle of the Disappearing Hour Glass Join us at the education table in February for the puzzle of the Disappearing Hour Glass. From an Hour Glass block, cut into 9 pieces, what arrangements can you make? There are lots of possibilities and some secondary patterns don’t emerge until you put several blocks together. Keep in mind that just because you start with 9 pieces, they don’t all have to go together into the same block! After all, two 4-patch units + 1 block = 9 pieces as well.

A Few Quilting History Facts Currently, I am completing a quilt which is a reproduction of an antique quilt that Betsy Chutchian owns in her collection. I participated in Betsy’s workshop back in November. The quilt is called Hope’s Journey and brings to mind the California Gold Rush of the late 1840’s. There is quite a bit of vibrant cheddar in the pattern, but I modified my quilt to include just a little less. The point of sharing this is that it got me thinking about the “history” of quilts and quilting. Following are just a few interesting tidbits:• The word quilt comes from

the Latin culcita meaning a stuffed sack, but it came into the English language from the

French word cuilte.• The origins of quilting remain

unknown, but historians do know that quilting, piecing, and applique were used for clothing and furnishings in diverse parts of the world in early times. The earliest known quilted garment is on the carved ivory figure of a Pharaoh of the Egyptian First Dynasty about 3400 B.C. In 1924 archaeologists discovered a quilted floor covering in Mongolia. They estimated that it dates from somewhere between the first century B.C. to the second century A.D. There are also numerous references to quilts in literature and also inventories of estates.

• Crusaders brought quilting to Europe from the Middle East in the late 11th century. Quilted garments were popular in the Middle Ages. Knights wore them under their armor for comfort. They also used quilted garments to protect the metal armor from the elements (rain, snow, sun).

• The earliest known surviving bed quilt is one from Sicily from the end of the 14th century. It is made of linen and padded with wool. The blocks across the center are scenes from the legend of Tristan. The quilt is 122” by 106” and is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

There is so much history out there about quilts and quilting, it is so very interesting! So maybe consider starting a bee and possibly discussing a piece of history in your bee at every meeting. Gather some friends and guild members and create your own group. The bee keeper is happy to assist in putting bee members together. Chat with your friendly Bee Keeper at the next guild meeting to discuss open bees or bees waiting to happen. Also, there is interest in starting a “mystery” bee and starting an EQ8 bee. If anyone is interested, stop by and see the Bee Keeper at the next guild meeting and sign up. - Shawn Greenough

Membership News Congratulations Prairie Star Quilters Guild! We are now a membership of like- minded individuals of over 305 and counting! It is so much fun to meet as a group of talented people, interested in all of the aspects of quilting. We feed off of each others’ talents at each meeting. Please plan to be at our April business meeting for a special celebration!

Tired of winter and cold weather? Think spring and a March retreat at Siena in Racine, WI. I can’t promise warm weather but it definitely won’t be -40 with wind chill. The retreat is scheduled for Monday March 19- Thursday March 22nd. The cost is $245/person including breakfast. You can purchase additional meals or make your own in their large kitchen. There are also many restaurants available in the area. There are still a

few openings left. A retreat is a great place to make new friends and learn new techniques. You can download a registration form “Siena Retreat 2018” (ht tp://psqg.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Registration-Form-Siena-2018.docx) or pick one up from Yvonne Richter at the education table. Questions can be directed to [email protected] or phone 630-450-0037.

A Special Guest from Down Under! Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession (http://www.materialobsession.com.au/) will visit us in March of 2018 to explore the world of quilting thru an innovative mixture of colors and patterns! Kathy Doughty remembers a simple childhood spent playing on green grass and exploring the forests accessed through her yard in Ohio. Upon graduating she landed in the punk rock era of the East Village of NYC where she spent ten years working in advertising, fashion and marketing, which taught her to look at traditional things with a new eye. It was her move to Australia in 1990 that brought Kathy to sewing and quilting. She found the “American” activity of sewing and quilting connected her to roots in the USA and filled a big gap in her life. In 2003 she co-founded Material Obsession, then in 2008 became a sole owner/director of the popular patchwork shop where you can find her every day listening, learning, and helping customers select fabric for their projects. Material Obsession made a dynamic entry into the quilt world by embracing the newest FreeSpirit designers including

Denyse Schmidt, Amy Butler and Anna Maria Horner as well as Kaffe Fassett. The shop encourages quilters to experiment with textiles, design and method. In 2014 Kathy designed her first collection of fabric inspired by her personal collection of Kantha quilts from India. Her second fabric collection was inspired by the pond-side environments of her youth. As an avid quilter, Kathy’s quilt designs reflect her eclectic interests in a wide range of techniques from modern quilting to paper piecing.
