The Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and his fi rm OMA have created a sprawling complex with 19.000 square feet of exhibition space, poised to become a major international destination for the arts; a private institution which it has also a very public role: the new Prada Foundation Art Museum signs a fruitful alliance between the public and the private sectors that Milan has been promoting for a long time. This project is the starting point for the redevelopment of a large discarded area in the southern suburbs of the city, putting down its roots on the site of a former distillery compound in a scruffy industrial neighborhood just before the Porta Romana railway station. The new museum, now a key role in the Largo Isarco area, is a campus including seven original buildings juxtaposed with three new constructions (Podium, Cinema and Tower) all designed as a collection of structures that span different types of architecture. OMA’s Prada Foundation is an uncommon architectural site where two opposed dimensions at different levels well coexist; the old and the new, horizontal and vertical lines, wide and narrow spaces, outdoor and indoor locations: all of them confront each others in a state of permanent interaction. Colombo Costruzioni SpA has undertook the contract as Main Contractor, realizing the superb and wittily venue, partially inaugurated in May 2015; indeed the project is expected to be completed in 2016 with the upcoming nine-storey high tower that will house long-term installations.

The complex unveils a unique and functional architecture. The new Prada Foundation Arts Museum is a unique and contemporary com-plex that brings the former raw distillery and the surrounding industrial areas to a new life: built on tradition and retaining its basic identity is however orien-ted to the future; it is more than an art gallery and it exploits its architectural resources as fully as possible. In addition to the exhibition pavilions for tem-porary and permanent installations there are a cinema, a theatre, the Prada archive, the administrative headquarter, a kids area designed by a group of 18 students from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles (National School of Architecture of Versailles) hosted in this huge cultural space as well as the Bar Luce styled by the American fi lm director Wes Andersons that recreates the typical mood of an old Milanese café.The new buildings are alternatively made of glass, white concrete and an alu-minum that has been treated so that it has a foamy surface; the succession of colours – from the grey industrial plaster to the black and white – is in contrast to the dreamy gold-leafed exterior of the Haunted House, one of the extant bu-ildings, which lights up the dull tones of the environment, absorbing all kinds of refl ections and giving an unrealistic picture to the surroundings.
