What can you do for cellulite?

Dear patient,

Over 80% of all people over the age of 20 are affected by cellulite (dimpledorange-peel-like skin). Although cellulite is a cosmetic problem and not a disea-se, it nevertheless may lead to substantial psychological strain and contributeto limited quality and enjoyment of life.

It is now known that there are many causes of cellulite; in fact, many differentfactors, to a greater or lesser degree, encourage cellulite formation. Besidesinherited factors, individual hormonal status and structure of the connectivetissue, lack of exercise, and incorrect eating habits all play a role. People inindustrial nations eat too much food, too much fat, and too much meat. Theconsequent weight gain, but also a nutrition-dependent acid excess in the body, can worsen cellulite development. Thus, an effective treatment of cellulite iscomprised of several treatment approaches that together improve the reducti-on of cellulite.

You can do much to visibly improve the appearance of your cellulite. Howe-ver, cellulite does not disappear overnight, and patience is required – but it isworth it! This guidebook provides many tips so that you can successfully reachyour goal – smooth skin on your thighs and buttocks.

What is cellulite and how does it develop?

The terms "cellulite" and "cellulitis" tend to be used synonymously ingeneral language use. In this guidebook, the term "cellulite" is used todifferentiate from infectious diseases, the latter being denoted by theending "itis" in the term "cellulitis.”

The human body has fat tissues, which are predominantly locatedin the subcutaneous tissue, to be used as important energy reser-ves. Men and women have a different arrangement pattern ofthese fat stores. In adult men, they are situated in the abdomi-nal area due to the influence of male hormones (androgens).

In adult women, on the other hand, they are situated mostly onthe thighs and in the gluteal and buttock region because theyare governed by estrogens. A woman has double the amountof fat layered on her legs as does a man.

The structure of the subcutaneous tissue is also differentbecause it, too, is hormonally regulated. The fat cells in

the female subcutaneous tissue are combined into larger fat cell chambers, having an average size ofapproximately 0.5 x 1.5 cm. The chambers are

bordered by connective tissue fibres and thereby keptin shape. If the so-called “Pinch Test” is performed onthe thigh, these large fat cell chambers will warp, andthe typical cellulite appearance becomes visible.

WHAT IS CELLULITE?

6 7

Female Male

The more fat that needs to be stored, the more full the single fat cell chambersbecome. Because they are confined by the connective tissue fibres, the full fatcell chambers are forced to push themselves outwards and the typical cellulitepattern forms. Furthermore, the expansion of the fat cells within the fat cellchambers exerts pressure on lymph vessels located nearby to cause a changein the surrounding cell milieu. Lymph drainage is reduced, waste products canno longer be effectively transported away, and excess fluid remains in the tissue, all of which will lead to a strong development of cellulite. Reducedlymph drainage, in turn, leads to increased accumulation of fat stores in thetissue. A vicious cycle develops.

Moreover, a reduction of elasticity in the connective tissue may even result inadditionally reinforcing cellulite formation. Acid excess (hyperacidity) in thebody as another possible cause will be discussed momentarily.

Men are less affected by cellulite. The reason is that the connective tissuefibers lying in between the fat cells are arranged into a net-like pattern. Thismeans that no larger fat cell chambers can develop. As a result, only crena-tions and folds in the skin are visible when the “Pinch Test” is performed.

Structure of the Subcutaneous Fat Tissue in the Thigh

So, what can you do if you cannot recognize any cellulite on yourthigh and buttocks, but you would like to know if your skin has

already changed?

Then do the “Pinch Test”!Using your thumb and index finger, pinch the skin in the area

of your thigh and buttocks and look for irregularities (dents).

Hormonal Influences

That women even develop cellulite is determined by the structure of the subcutaneous tissue, which is dependent on estrogen influence. Estrogen causes the tissue to be not so closely meshed. This makes biological sensebecause the tissue can expand to better accommodate a growing embryoduring pregnancy.

Experts are discussing if the additional intake of estrogen (for example, thebirth control pill) has an influence oncellulite development.

INFLUENCING FACTORS ON CELLULITE

Nutrition/Body Weight

Excess weight is seen as the main reason for cellulite. Excessive food intakeleads to an accumulation of fat deposits, typically localized in the thigh andgluteal regions in women. When fat cells fill, the pressure in the fat cell cham-bers increases with the aforementioned consequences (lymph drainage disturbances), and the cellulite unquestionably appears. However, there arewomen who are very slim and already have cellulite. In this case, other

causes are the deciding factors in cellulite formation.

Besides excess weight, the nutritional composition offood can be a cause of cellulite

Our daily diet today consists of 80% acid-formingfoods. Fast food, too much meat, fish, sausage, cheese, and eggs are a big part of our daily diet.

Likewise, the consumption of items like coffee, alcohol, and cigarettes has increased. All these

substances are metabolized to acids in our bodies.

In a metabolically healthy organism, incidental acids are neutralized and eliminated daily (elimination organs: lungs, kidneys, liver, skin, and gut). Thebody is overburdened when more acidic metabolic wastes develop in thebody than are neutralized and eliminated. To counteract this imbalance, theorganism stores surplus acids in the tissue. Later – when the blood possessesadequate alkaline mineral substances again – the “parked” acids can beremoved. If this situation continues due to a long-term deficiency of alkalinemineral salts and an established acid load, the tissue looses elasticity. It swellsup and is damaged more and more because of resulting deficient nutrient- and oxygen provision and increasingly stronger waste products.

FACTORS INFLUENCING CELLULITE DEVELOPMENT

10 11

Too much protein

White flour products

Excess Acidity

Fast food

Coffee

Nicotine/Alcohol

Inherited Factors (Genetic Predisposition)

A genetic or inherited predisposition plays a rolein the formation of cellulite. The most importantfactors are gender (women are almost exclusivelyaffected); race (white females tend to be more prone to cellulite than Asians or Africans); arrangement of fat tissue; hormonal sensitivity of the affected cells; and the predisposition for vessel weakness(vessel weakness lead to poorer circulation in the tissue).

Wearing tight clothes, high heels, and long periods of standing or sitting without changing position all have a negative impact on reversing the flowof blood and lymph in the circulation (muscle pumping is missing).

Lack of Exercise

Today, too much sitting and a general lack of move-ment is common. This will lead to the degradationof muscles, decreased circulation, reduced meta-bolism, and the consequent build-up of fat tissue. As soon as the existing fat cells fill up, develop-ment of cellulite is reinforced.

By the way: Lack of movement, stress, excessive demands, and worry all influence acid-base balance and

can also lead to an acid burden in the organism.

Nicotine

Smokers have an increased risk for cellulite. Nicotine reduces the circulation inthe tissue. The metabolism becomes curbed, and fat storage is encouraged. Inaddition, collagen fibres in the connective tissue are damaged.

Dieting and the “Yo-Yo Effect”

Warning! Short radical diets actually intensify cellulite development! If anything, muscle mass is catabolised rather than fat deposits being reduced. The notorious “yo-yo effect” common in dieting should be avoided because it consequently worsens cellulite.

FACTORS INFLUENCING CELLULITE DEVELOPMENT

12 13

Counteracting cellulite formation through early prevention is the best treatment. To successfully reduce already formed cellulite, many areas shouldbe targeted. Weight reduction, improved nutrition – preferably rich in alkaline

foods – local treatment of cellulite, and of course exercise, are allgood options.

Nutrition

Cellulite can be counteracted through specificlong-term changes of the nutritional habits (morefruit and vegetables, less fat and meat). No radicaldiets! Losing weight too quickly can, if anything,

aggravate cellulite. Try to lose weight slowly anddo so with a combination of healthy nutrition and

exercise.

At the same time, it is important that the acid-base balance is in equilibrium. To determine if you are in a hyperacidic state, the pH-value of your urine canbe measured. The exact procedure should be discussed with your qualifiedhealthcare professional. Your acid-base balance can be returned to equilibri-um by increasing your ingestion of alkaline-forming foods: they should accountfor 75% of your daily diet. Alkaline-forming foods include fruits, vegetables, potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, herbs, and also herbal teas. Supplement your dietwith an alkalinizing product such as pH-balance PASCOE® twice daily.

Skin and Connective Tissue Treatment

In the treatment of cellulite, it is always important to use methods to improvelymph drainage of the affected skin area. One such treatment is so-calledmanual lymph drainage that is only performed by specially trained physio-therapists. The lymph vessel activity is stimulated with specific massagemaneuvers that encourage lymph drainage and consequently improves theskin’s appearance.

A similar affect can be achieved at home using creams such as LYMPHDIARALDrainage Cream. Creams must be used that are specific for fluid accumulationin the tissues. They are not to be confused with cosmetic cellulite creams.

Cosmetic cellulite creams do make the skin supple, but they have no effect onthe subcutaneous fat tissue. In April 2003, the German Product Testing Agencyrenewed their statement that skin-care products, which claimed to successfullyreduce cellulite, only scored an “inadequate” result during testing.

Regularly massaged skin also remains elastic. Specific massage that is circu-lation-provoking achieves positive effects on reducing cellulite.

An inexpensive way to assist the circulation of the tissue is a “brushing massage” or a “plucking massage.” Take some more time for your morningshower and use a soft brush perform the brushing massage. Alternating showers, that is, showering with alternating warm and cold water on thethighs and the buttocks, has also been shown to be helpful. Circulation is stimulated, tissue metabolism is activated, and waste products can be increa-singly transported away.

Even the easily accomplished plucking massage (small skin sections are liftedup between two fingers and then let fall again) is very effective! Please consi-der that massages, which stimulate the circulation, always lead to additionalfluid accumulation in the tissues. Thus, it is important to use a cream like LYMPH-DIARAL Drainage Cream in conjunction with a massage.

Exercise

Exercise is a very effective method of treating cellulite. The most optimal activities are those in which the thighs are especially trained. These include inline-skating, walking, biking, and swimming. Calisthenic exercises thatstrengthen the musculature in the thighs are also ideal. Gyms often offer suchrelevant classes like “Legs, Butt, & Abs.” This guidebook contains some effec-tive cellulite-reducing exercises for you to try at home.

Keep your legs beside each other while sitting. Do not cross your legs!Doing this stops the circulation and lymph flow and can increase cellulite.

TREATMENT OF CELLULITE

What can I do? Overview of the most important steps for cellulite treatment

 Lose weight slowly if overweight.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables (5 x daily), and less fat and meat. Preferably eat many alkaline-forming foods and reduce intake of acid-forming foods. Alkaline-forming foods include leaf lettuce, vegetables, sprouts, pineapple, apricots, figs, potatoes, whey, olives, chickpeas.

Check your urine with a pH test strip to see if an acid burden exists.Support your body with neutralization and increase your ingestion ofmineral supplements. Use pH-balance PASCOE – daily!

Drink a minimum of 2 liters of water or herbal tea daily to help releasewaste products.

Avoid coffee, soft drinks, alcohol, and cigarettes.

Increase the metabolism on the thighs and buttocks. Alternating showers, massages, and LYMPHDIARAL Drainage Cream can really help.

Become physically active. Your body and your cellulite will thank you for it.

Calisthenic exercises support the transportation away of movable waste products and acids. On the next page of this patient guidebook you will findexamples of suitable calisthenic exercises.

EXERCISE 2Place your knees on the floor and use yourright arm to support yourself on the side.Angle your left arm to place your left handon your hip. Stretch your left leg out and liftit to the same height as your hip. Moveyour stretched leg 15 times upwards withsmall quick movements and then alternate toslow movements for another 15 times. Repeatthe exercise on the other side.Pay attention to keeping your buttocks and stomach tense during the entireexercise, and do not let your body fall into a “hollow-back” position. The sup-porting arm and the elevated leg should remain stretched during the entireexercise.

EXERCISE 3Take large steps in a forward direction. Bend the front leg to a 90 degreeangle and slightly angle the back leg. Place your hands on the front thigh.

Bend both legs downwards and then rise up again.Perform this exercise 15 times on each side

and then repeat it twice more.Pay attention to keeping your body straightduring the entire exercise and keepingyour knee at a 90 degree angle.

Calisthenic Exercises for Thigh and Buttocks

Perform the following exercises regularly and as often as possible

EXERCISE 1Stand with straddled and slightly bent legs. Turn your feet outwards, tenseyour buttocks, and keep your upper body straight. Place your hands on yourthighs. Bend your knees somewhat further and then rise again. Breathe inwith the downward movement and breathe out with the elevation. Perform

this movement slowly and repeat it 30 times.Pay attention to keeping your head straight

during the entire exercise.

EXERCISE 4Lie down on your back, bend your knees, and place your hands at the sides of yourbody. Push your pelvis upwards slowly –until hip height – and then gently down-wards again. Your pelvis should not touch

the floor.Pay attention to keeping your gaze directed

at the ceiling during the exercise, and do not donot let your body fall into a “hollow-back” position.

Perform the exercises 20 times and then repeat three more times.

EXERCISE 5Lie down on your back and place your armsto the sides of your body. Your head andshoulders should remain on the floor. Ele-vate your legs to a 90 degree angle andthen straddle them outwards. The kneesshould not be fully straightened. Hold thestretch for approximately 10 seconds. Thelegs are then gently pulled inwards andmoved outwards again. Breathe in whenstraddling your legs outwards and breathe outwhen bringing your legs inwards. Do 20 repetitions. Between the exercisesyou can angle your legs briefly to pause for a break.Pay attention to keeping your back tight against the floor during the exercise.
