Summer is a wonderful time to spend at West Beach. It is a beach with light- colored, soft sand. The coastline goes on for a long way and many people enjoy walking along it. Children like to play in the surf and walk along the rocks that are visible at low tide. This is a fun beach for people of all ages.

A. Catherine & Shelly were very excited that they were both in a play together. Catherine had always wanted to act. She wasn’t supposed to miss rehearsals, but she did.

We Do A Better Community

My daughter brought a note home. I looked at the note and smiled. “So we will have a recycling center,” I said. She started to explain why it is important to recycle. “I know,” I said, but I don’t have time.

She thought of a way to recycle. She set up a bag in the kitchen. She said it would be for plastic. We would put plastic in there. Then once a month we would take the plastic to the Recycle Center. She said that plastic takes us lots of energy to make. And she said that it is hard for the environment when people throw it out.

It seemed like a good idea. But then the bag got full. In one week we had filled it with empty plastic bottles. My daughter said we should look at what we use. We are using too much plastic. So we looked for ways to use less plastic.

I told my neighbor about this. She liked the idea. She started keeping her plastic in a bag. We all went together to the Recycle Center on the first Saturday. We brought our plastic.

When we got there, we saw many bags. People had brought lots of trash. They brought paper and metal, too. “Now that we have this center, it is easier to recycle,” said my neighbor.

When we were walking back from the Recycle Center, I saw a change. The street was cleaner. Most days I see trash in the street. People litter. But there was no litter today. My daughter said that another class had “adopted” the street. They were picking up litter there and taking it to the Recycle Center.

I said this is really big. It is about more than plastic. It is about lots of changes.

“Happy Birthday!” Nathan awoke to the voice of his mother. “It’s time to get up and drive out to your grandfather’s ranch.” “Why do we have to go there? And how long is the drive anyway?” he asked with a dismal look in his eyes. “About two hours…..and don’t worry, we’ll bring your birthday presents with us.” His mother walked out of his room and left him to get ready. In less than an hour, the car was loaded and Nathan, his mother, and his father were on their way. Thoughts of what the colorful, birthday packages had inside filled his head. He was certain that one had the baseball glove he wanted, while others would contain wondrous things that he had only dreamed about. His attention shifted to the passing trees, and he tried to remember the last time that he had seen his grandfather. His thoughts returned to his gifts, and he wondered what his birthday present from his grandfather might be. “We’re here,” his mother said, breaking him from his thoughts. As the car slowed and turned, Nathan looked down the dirt road that led to his grandfather’s ranch. “Since my grandfather has a ranch, then he must have a lot of money, and the bigger his present for me will be,” Nathan whispered to himself. Finally, they arrived at a huge ranch house. There was a stable with a large corral to the right of the house. In the corral, three horses galloped over to the fence as fast as lightning. Grandfather appeared in the doorway of the house and waved at Nathan and his mother to come inside. With arms full of presents, Nathan and his mother entered the house. “Put those packages down and come over here and give your grandpa a hug.” His grandfather motioned with his hand where to place the gifts. Plopping them down on the hall table, Nathan ran to the outstretched arms. Hugging his grandfather, he excitedly exclaimed, “I’ve missed you! You know, today’s my birthday. Did you get me a present?” “I have missed you, too. Yes, I know it’s your birthday, and I have a very special present for you that I would like you to open first.” He went over to the fireplace and took a small box off the mantle. Placing the box in Nathan’s hand, he quietly said, “This is a very important gift. I hope you will treasure it as much as I have.” Nathan looked at the small box, thinking money or jewels might be inside….but what did his grandfather mean, “treasure it as much as I have”? Opening the box, Nathan was surprised to see only a stone. It was a very beautiful, polished stone, but was it valuable? Grandfather spoke more slowly than before, “Nathan, when your grandma and I were first married, we had very little money. She wanted to give me something special for my birthday, so she found this beautiful rock and polished it day and night until it shined. It was the greatest gift I ever received because it came from your grandma’s heart. Now, I want you to have it because it comes from my heart.” Nathan held the stone in his hand and felt the love of his grandfather. “This is a wonderful gift….thank you, Grandfather.” As Nathan hugged him, he knew he had received the best gift ever.

He looked closely and read the words “Dragons of the Deep.” “Dragons!” Sarah exclaimed. “Do you think they will be scary?” “Of course not,” said her father. “Wait until you see what they really look like.”

Peter and Sarah followed their parents into the building. The air inside was cool, and the only light seemed to come from the blue water in the huge fish tanks. Peter looked in the first tank. At first glance, it appeared to be filled with leafy seaweed. Suddenly a long piece broke off from the rest and floated upward. Peter moved closer and noticed a dark eye and a horse-shaped head. “It isn’t seaweed at all!” he said. “It’s an animal!” Peter and Sarah were amazed as they watched more of the interesting creatures move about the tank. Their bodies were covered with leaf-like parts that floated outward, often making them difficult to see among the plants in the tank. “They are called sea dragons,” his mother explained. “They live in the ocean near Australia.” The family watched the strange fish a little longer, and then Peter tugged at his father’s hand. “Come on, Dad,” he pleaded. “Let’s see the rest of the fish!” “Wait a minute,” laughed his mother. “I thought fish were boring!” Peter felt ashamed when his mother repeated his earlier words. “I’m sorry, Mom,” he apologized. “I was wrong. This place is really great!”
