CAPILLARY ACTION
CAPILLARY RISE
The upward movement of a liquid against
the force of gravity inside narrow spaces and thin
tubes is called capillary rise . This property of liquid
is called capillarity. A common apparatus used to
demonstrate capillarity is the capillary tube.
REASON
Capillarity occurs because of
intermolecular forces between the liquid and
surrounding solid surface. And due to the pressure
of cohesion and adhesion which cause the liquid
work against gravity.
CAPILLARY FALL
Liquids like mercury which have high
cohesive force show capillary fall inside such
glass tubes.
When the diameter of the tube
increases , capillary rise increases.
APPLICATIONS
Ordinary kerosene lamp
Softness of cotton
Hoeing of the soil before summer season
Capillary action draws ink to the tips of
fountain pen nibs.
Plants and trees getting water from earth.
