Colonial AmericaSlavery
The first slaves that were brought into America were mostly indentured servants and they became free, but as slavery grew slaves no longer were considered indentured servants they were known as property and would never become free.
Slavery was highest in the South because of the large plantations and the extreme amounts of cotton and tobacco being produced. Slavery was very hard labor and most of them knew nothing of the good life. They were given enough food to keep them healthy but their sleeping conditions were very poor.
Slaves were not allowed to practice their own religion due to the fact that the owners thought they would become liberated and rebel. Most would be converted into Christians.
