BRIEF BACKGROUND

Makerere University is one of the oldest and most

prestigious Universities in Africa established in 1922

as a technical school.

It was later renamed Uganda Technical College, with

14 day students.

It expanded over the years to become a Center for

Higher Education in 1935. In 1937, the College started

developing into an institution, offering post-school

certificate courses.

In 1970, Makerere became an independent national

university of the Republic of Uganda, offering

undergraduate and postgraduate courses leading to its

own awards.

Today the University offers not only day but also

evening and external study programs to a student

body of about 30,000 undergraduates and 3,000

postgraduates both Ugandan and foreign.

THE COLLEGES

• Makerere adopted the College system in July 2011 under which the governing authority and functions are divided between a central administration and a number of constituent colleges. Unlike the previous 110 departments and 21 academic units, the University now operates under eight colleges each led by a principal appointed by the Vice Chancellor.

THE COLLEGES

COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES.(CHUSS)

This is the largest college and it comprises of five(5) schools namely;

School of languages, literature and communication.

School of social sciences.

School of psychology

School of women and gender studies

School of liberal and performing Arts.

The college also comprises one institute called Makerere Institute of Social Research(MISR)

The college aims at promoting the disciplines of humanities and social sciences through teaching , learning, research and knowledge transfer partnerships.

COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES.(CONAS)

The college trains students in Petroleum Geo studies, mineral exploration among others.

It comprises 6 departments namely;

COLLEGE OF BUSSINESS AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES(COBAMS)The college was formed as a merger between the faculty of Economics and Management(FEMA) and the institute of Statistics and Applied Economics.(ISAE)

The college comprises of three schools namely;

The school of Economics with two departments.

School of business also with two departments

School of statistics and applied Economics consisting of three departments.

The college aims at producing high caliber professionals and promoting research and knowledge transfer in Economics, Statistics, Business Management and Population Sciences, for informed and sustainable development.

COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES.

Lies within Mulago hospital . It initially started as a faculty of medicine in 1924 .

It was established on 1st Dec 2007 under the “universities and other Tertiary institutions Act.

The college comprises four schools namely;

The school of Medicine.

The school of Public Health

The school of Biometric Sciences

The school of Health sciences.

The college is dedicated to improving the health of the people in Uganda and beyond promoting health eqity by providing quality education, research and health services.

COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE ,ANIMAL AND BIOSECURITY.(CoVAB)

It consist s of two schools namely;

The school of Biosecurity, Biotechnical and Laboratory services.

The school of veterinary Medicine and Animal Resources.

The college focuses mainly on training, research, and outreach services.

The college aims at driving transformative skills, knowledge, technology, enterprise, learning, research and engagement services for the continuous well being and socio-economic growth.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND EXTERNAL STUDIESThe college was formed following the merger of school of Education and Institute of Adult and continuing Education.

It has three school and two centers namely

School of Distance and Lifelong learning.

East African school of Higher Education Studies and Development

Centre for Teaching and Learning Support

Centre for Life long Learning.

The college aims at excelling in the preparation of teachers, other education practitioners, adult education providers ,community workers and providers of open, distance learning; to excel in the provision of quality Odel.

COLLEGE OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATION SCIENCES(CoCIS)

• Speaking in an exclusive interview, Nelson Bamwine an IT graduate from CoCIS and Consultant at Data Care gave his opinion about the College.

The college was established on 13th

December 2010.

It is made up of two schools namely;

school of computing and

informatics technology, (CIT) and this

has four departments.

East African school of Library and

Information Sciences (EASLIS) with two

departments.

The college is committed to delivering

excellent services in the area of

computing, Library, Records and

Information Sciences and attracts both

local and international students.

SCHOOL OF LAW

The school of Law was established as the department of Law under the school of Social Sciences at Makerere University College in June 1968.

The Department became the school of Law on 1st July 1970.

The school of Law offers programs that include a four year Bachelor of Laws Degree (L.L.B), a two year Master of Laws program (L.L.M) as well as a Doctorate program (L.LD).

The School aims at keeping pace with the changing legal environment among other aims. It’s curriculum has programs that are tailored to produce a more relevant and all round legal profession.

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT.(CAES)

It comprises three schools ,namely;

The school of Forestry, Environment and Geographical science with three departments.

The school of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bio Engineering with two departments.

The school of Agricultural sciences with three departments.

The college aims at advancing training, knowledge generation and service delivery in order to enhance agricultural development, sustainable natural resource utilization and environmental management.

THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Makerere University library comprises of the Main Library and seven specialized Branch Libraries, five located Makerere University main campus and two off campus. The library is adjacent to the freedom square, opposite the Faculty of Agriculture.

The library aims at meeting the study, teaching, research and outreach information needs for sustainable national and regional development.

In its capacity, it serves as a National Reference Library . it is also a legal depository of all works published in Uganda, including government publications. It is also the depository of United Nations' publications and related bodies.

The Library also boasts of a special collection of information resources, consisting of the University archives, Africana materials, manuscripts and photographic materials (all located in Africana section); and the history of medicine in Uganda (located in Albert Cook Branch Library). These unique collections are preserved and provide access to interesting information on Uganda's heritage.

THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

The Hospital is managed by the

Director in conjunction with the

Hospital Administration and also

assisted by the Senior Nursing

Officer. It comprises of various units

which render different services to the

University Community. It has medical

units which are available to staff and to

students. It offers both curative and

preventive services.

The Hospital has a 32 bed in-patient

ward and admissions to the ward are

exclusively for students only. However,

the Hospital Administration is trying in

every ways possible to improve on the

services and aspects of the Hospital so

as to provide wider and better services

to the University Community.

THE UNIVERSITY PLACES OF WORSHIP• These are basically three, including the university

mosque for the Muslim believers and two churches that is; St. Augustine and St. Francis for the Chapels.

THE UNIVERSITY HALLS OF RESIDENCE

Every students at Makerere is attached to a given hall of residence.

These are divided into boys’ and girls’ halls , where every student is attached to a given hall. However, this gives students an option of either sleeping inside or outside the University.

There are six halls for the boys and three for the girls making them nine halls in total.

Namely; Mitchell, Nkrumah, Nsibirwa, Lumumba and Living Stone halls for the boys.

Complex, Mary Stuart and Africa for the girls.

LUMUMBA HALL

Lumumba hall was built in the late 1960s and was opened in 1971. It was named after Congolese freedom fighter, Patrice Lumumba. It is the biggest hall on campus, located on Lumumba road just next to Mary Stuart.

The hall accommodates about 752 students, with 241 double rooms and two open blocks.

MARY STUART HALL

This was the first female hall that started in 1945 housed in a small house at the current Guest House. The hall was named after the wife of the missionary Dr. Stuart of Mengo Hospital known as Mary Stuart The hall is the biggest female hall known as box due to the physical structure of the hall. It houses female students and they call themselves boxers.

The hall has a total of 208 rooms, in the eight-storied tower block and two wings.

The hall has a monument of Gongomesi a symbol of a woman believed to be wife of Gongom. It has solidarity with Lumumba Hall which houses male students. The solidarity is known as Lumbox.

UNIVERSITY HALL (UH)

UH is a service oriented unit for students and staff. It was opened as a Hall of residence in July 1957. The structure of the building was of a rectangular form. During the 1960/61 the original plan was alternated.The students call their hall, the only hall on campus, with a culture of a special and strong meekness symbolized by their association with a goat–thus the language of goat land, “Heb! Heb! Heb!” In 2004 the goats decided to look for she goats, the hunting ended up at the hostel called Garden Courts which is found off Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road. They united both cultures and came up with a new name, “Unicorts Solidarity”. Since that day, all the cultural activities are carried together as “Unicent solidarity”

LIVING STONE HALL

The hall was opened at the

beginning of the 1959/60

academic year.

Mr. Temple was the Hall’s first

Warden and only 146 students

occupied the hall at its first

opening.

Livingstone residents are referred

to as “Gentlemen” and have a

solidarity with the “Ladies” of

Africa Hall called “Afrostone”. This

solidarity was formed in 1976 and

its activities became more

pronounced in the 1980s.

MITCHELL HALL

Mitchell Hall traces its origins from the very first Hostels that were built in the 1920s to house Students of the initial Technical School from which the present day University was founded. These Hostels (named after their first prefects e.g. Sepuya, Semakokiro, Bamugye) were merged in the 1930s to form one hall named Mitchell, after the then Governor of the Uganda Protectorate, Sir Philip Mitchell.

Mitchell is between Mitchell Hall who refer to themselves as Rats, and Complex Hall, women who are popularly known as Crocodiles.

NSIBIRWA HALL

This hall started in 1952, it was originally called Northcote and was named after Geoffrey Northcote, who was the Chairman of the University Council in 1948 at the time of his death.

The hall had an anthem, culture of having generals, a drum (known as stereo) and a tractor (state car). Their history has been somewhat volatile and at one time 23 students from Northcote Hall were dismissed due to invasion of Livingstone and Africa where seven kilogrammes of red pepper were poured in their food.

Current capacity of the hall is 475 residents, comprising government and private sponsored International Students on Inter University Exchange and other nationals.

NKRUMAH HALLNkrumah hall was named after the great African leader Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana. The hall was at first known as new Hall under the management of Northcote, but gained its independence after a while though it still shares a kitchen with Nsibirwa Hall.

It is well known for the culture of Pan Africanism. In front of the hall you find Kwame Nkurumah’smonument.

Nkrumah Hall is located on Pool Road after the swimming pool opposite Faculty of Economics and Management.

It accommodates a total number of about 500 students.

The Hall also uses Osagyefo to mean Nkrumah. It is in solidarity with Mulago View Hostel and Nkruview solidarity binds the two residences together.

COMPLEX HALL (CCE)

The hall originally started as the Old Mitchell hall and CCE main hall of adult education studies. The hall started in 1982 as complex It is located at the southern end of the main campus about 150 metres from the main gate.

The hall has 157 rooms, 101 are triple, 56 double, and a single. The hall comprises four blocks.Complex hall is identified by the symbol of a crocodile. Hence complexers are referred to as the gallant guaranteed crocodiles.

The origin of the symbol started way back when complex hall would flood a lot but the students persisted, therefore acquiring the title “crocodile”.

“Harmony with Diginity” are the hall values that encompass all cultural norms and disciplinary values of complex hall.It is affiliated to Mitchell hall of male students.

AFRICA HALL

The New Women’s Hall as Africa Hall was called then, first opened its doors to 75 freshers on June 29, 1971.
