Innovative Practices in Higher Education Expo 2015 (I- PHEX 2015) Teaching Programming Techniques for Computer Science students is a big challenge especially in the context of enhancing their ability in problem solving using any programming language. 35-45% of them are failed for the first time taken. Handling class of repeat students of this type of course give an opportunity to the lecturer to explore several approaches to ensure these students able to achieve the expected outcomes and position at the same level with their batch. As repeat students, the prior knowledge of this course is exist in the mind through previous semester learning activities, assessment and others. This opportunity is used and manipulated with the application of flipped classroom and problem based learning approaches to these students throughout the semester. After the implementation of these approaches via e-learning platform with two groups of students in different semester, the result shows the outstanding performance among the students. The implementation of the first group of student reduced the failure rate to 20% compared to the normal rate, 30-40%. The second implementation shows tremendous achievement with 0% failed. Innovative Practices in Higher Education Expo 2015 (I-PHEX 2015)

Teaching Programming Techniques for Computer Science students is a big challenge especially in the context of enhancing their ability in problem solving using any programming language.

As the conclusion, this innovative idea is the integration of problem based learning and flipped classroom approaches to the repeat students give the significant impact to the their achievement rather than the conventional practices of delivery the curriculum.

OBJECTIVES

• To improve the learning performance among repeat students

• To apply flipped classroom, problem based learning, (+ blended learning) approaches in teaching and learning

ABSTRACT

RESULTS

Student Engagement throughIntegration of Flipped Classroom and Problem based Learning Approaches

for Class of Repeat Students

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INNOVATION

• To manage the group of students with a prior knowledge in a particular course either repeat students or adult learners

• To apply the teaching & learning approaches that suitable for a particular course and student background

ACHIEVEMENTS2012 UMP Academic Award – The Best Lecturer2013 Invited Presenter in UMP Teaching & Learning Colloquium2014 The best three lecturers for UMP Teaching Evaluation (Lecture Category)2014 The top lecturer for Teaching Evaluation UMP ( Lab Category)2014 Silver Medal Award in National University e-Learning Carnival (NUCEL2014)2015 Submitted for a chapter in a book titled “Student-Driven Learning Strategies for the 21st Century Classroom” by IGI Global/UiTM

WHO WILL BENEFIT AND HAS BENEFITED FROM THE INNOVATION

• Repeat students for a particular course• Lecturer for the class of repeat

students/adult learners• University that dealing with repeat

students/adult learners

EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES USED AS BASIS OF INNOVATION

POTENTIAL FOR EXPANSION / COMMERCIALIZATION / COMMUNITY BENEFITS ETC.

The approach may be applied for different group of student either repeat students or any students that have the basic knowledge for that particular course.
