EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) is seeking inter-nationally recognized scientists to fill three positions in the NationalRisk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL). One position (01)is located in Ada, Oklahoma and two positions (02, 03) are located inCincinnati, Ohio. NRMRL’s leadership in science and engineering isrecognized throughout EPA and the environmental community as thesource of responsive, objective solutions to complex, multidisciplinaryenvironmental problems. NRMRL-09-42-02 Director, Sustainable Technology Division (Inter-

• Establishing and leading a research program on sustainability thatincludes science-based decision support systems for addressing theecological integrity of natural and built environments, and analyzingenvironmental, societal and economic impacts of energy productionand use systems such as biofuels, and new materials such as nano-technology products, from a life cycle point of view.

NRMRL-09-42-03 Director, Water Supply and Water Resources

Division (Interdisciplinary- Biologist, Engineer, Physical Scientist,

• Establishing and leading a technically complex national researchprogram to develop improved methods for drinking water treatmentand distribution, protection of source waters, control of urban wetweather pollution and environmental management of watersheds.

Responsibilities for all positions include providing hands-on leadership ofORD’s research programs, serving as a senior spokesperson/representative,identifying collaborative opportunities with outside organizations, andplaying a vital leadership role within NRMRL.

The DIADEM Challenge – short for

Digital Reconstruction of Axonal

and Dendritic Morphology – will

bring together computational and

experimental scientists to test the

most promising new approaches

against the latest data in a real-

world environment.

The competition is open to individuals and teams

from the private sector and academic laboratories.

Competitors will have a year to implement an

algorithm for digital reconstruction of neuronal

morphology and to test it against the manual

reconstructions, the gold standard. Up to �ve

�nalists will compete in a tournament at a scienti�c

conference at the Janelia Farm Research Campus

in August 2010.

The competition is organized by the Allen Institute

for Brain Science, the Howard Hughes Medical

Institute (HHMI), and the Krasnow Institute for

Advanced Study at George Mason University. The

Allen Institute and HHMI have established the prize.

The National Institutes of Health is providing support

for a scienti�c conference that is independent of

—but held in conjunction with—the tournament
