In 1534, John II organized colonization of Brazil through land grants.

Increased smuggling of brazilwood pressed the effort to occupy the territory.

Martim Afonso de Sousa went to patrol the coast from French raids and there created the first 2 colonial towns: Sao Vincente and Sao Paulo.

15 original areas of Brazil were built by captaincies, captain-majors were to develop and run the land and never sell it.

Only Pernambuco and Sao Vincente prospered These 2 prospered because of the sugar cane crops. They crops

were so plentiful that Native American people were called in to help and became slaves. Eventually it would be the African American people that took over the job.

In the 18th century, a gold rush ensued in Brazil in an area known as Minas Gerais.

Portugal was especially interested because they used gold to pay for industrialized goods from other countries.

Gold was present in alluvial deposits around streams and was extracted using pans and other similar instruments that required little technology and was mostly done by slaves.

The Portuguese Crown allowed particulars to extract the gold, requiring a fifth (20%) of the gold (the quinto) to be sent to the colonial government as tribute.

When Portugal was taken over by Spain after the death of King Sebastian,Portugal was able to benefit.

They let themselves into the Spanish trade and increasingly ignored the boundaries in Brazil.

They pushed farther into the heart of Brazil and expanded their own territory to the West. The expeditions were initially to capture natives and force them into slavery, but eventually were for finding gold, silver, and diamond mines.

Eventually, after confrontations with the Dutch because of Spain, Portuguese broke off from Spain, but were never as powerful as they had once been in Brazil.
