The journey starts in Lisbon and heads south where the landscape imminently engulfs us with its vast grazing pastures, vineyards, lakes and the constant reminder of the Moorish presence in this territory over 700 years ago. Here its all about taking it slow and joining the locals in their easy way of life through slow food and gentle conversations. Following the curvy flow of the Guadiana River we ride through uncharted Portuguese territory and cross the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, not seeing a living soul for hundreds of kilometres.

Reaching the Algarve, the odor of the beach and sea joins our journey as we ride our motorcycles through Portugal’s playground. Here we will reach the tip of Europe in Sagres and see the place where the ancients believed the land ended and sea began. From here its a drive up to Lisbon, wiggling our way though one of Europe’s widest coastlines, and certainly one of the most exciting as well. A surfer’s and adventure seeker’s paradise, this coast has razor sharp cliffs which serve as a wall to the relentless pounding of the Atlantic. Now imagine sitting comfortably in a empty cliff, eating some grilled fish and chatting away with the locals as nature takes its course in front of you…This is what we call freedom!

The first part of this journey is almost all spent on coastal roads, where the Atlantic Ocean will always be in sight and where you will have the opportunity drive through some the Lisbon Regions most scenic and lush landscapes. From the top of a mountain you will be able to see the almost full extension of the “White City” and a further 60 kilometres into the blue horizon of the ocean. From here we head north to the fish and surf capital of Portugal, where you will meet José Manuel, an old “wolf of the sea” who will tell you all about how you catch (and eat) the best fish in the world.

Onwards we take a turn inland to the heritage capital of Alentejo and meet up some very interesting wine and olive oil boutique producers, whose demand for quality is as high as their warm welcome to new friends. Sit back and enjoy the never-ending plaines of cork trees, vineyards and wild bulls.

Portugal’s finest cuisine and meeting some very interesting characters. At the en of the Douro, right next to the border of Spain, we continue our trip north to the forgotten, unexplored Portugal of Trás-os-Montes (literally translated as behind the mountains). Here we sill travel through a Portugal that stood still in time for decades, where remote villages of 10 habitants still live of what the land and the cattle give them. In all directions, red earth rolling hills of olive and almond trees as far as the eye can see. Image sitting in a town square, drinking wine and eating charcuterie with the locals, knowing that your are the only foreigner for 50km… The last leg of the journey is Minho, home of Vinho Verde (Green Wine) and Salt Cod. We have saying that “In Portugal one can prepare salt Cod in 1001 different ways”. Wont make you try them all, but you get the picture!

DOURO TOURSeptember 3-9 | September 24-30 | October 15-21

Starting at Europe’s next Food and Wine Mecca: Porto, we will be sure to taste all the delicacies prepared by the  little eateries and small restaurants that make up the Porto Food Scene. We make our way up the Douro Valley following every turn of the river in a discovery of the World’s oldest and certainly most beautiful wine region in the world. The mirror like surface of the Douro and the corrugated lush green hills will be the backdrop to one of the most beautiful rides of your life. Set amongst this heaven like of a scenery are centuries old estates and manor houses, all privately owned and all with birds eyes view of the landscape. It is amongst this ambiance that you will be tasting Portugal’s finest cuisine and meeting some very interesting characters. This journey is all about private access to the most famous wine region in the world.

Discovering that behind all the glamour and tourists lies a candid and heartfelt land, where you will be treated as a member of the family and where every meal is a reason for celebration. This is what is most interesting about the Portuguese wine country: We know we have three wines in the top 5 best wines in the world by Wine Spectator 2015, we know that Hollywood stars and rich wannabes travel to this secluded part of Europe, but at the end of the day it is Rita and Nuno, the owners of a little vineyard estate in the Douro, who make their own wine and cater themselves to their guests who make this land that much more interesting.
