Our Marina forms the centre piece ofthe prestigious Port Marinedevelopment and really has becomethe place to be. There is a hive ofactivity around the Marina for bothlocals and visitors to enjoy, a variety ofvessels can regularly be seen locking inand out or being lifted to and from thewater. The H&W bar/restaurant andother hostelries along with a selectionof cafés all help in providing excellentmeeting places for good food andwine, there is also a good selection ofshops, restaurants and supermarketsall within easy walking distance of theMarina.

The historic dock now hometo Portishead Quays Marinawas built in 1869 and aftermany delays, first opened toshipping in 1879. The dockswere constructed by wideningand impounding the tidal pillbefore which, the waters of theBristol Channel reached up asfar as the old tide mill, now theMezzé Restaurant at the oldWhite Lion Inn. A mooringpoint for boats can still be seenon the wall opposite the Inn.The docks at Portishead andAvonmouth were built to helprelieve Bristol City Docks fromthe problems encountered dueto the growth in traffic andincreasing size of trading shipsmaking their way up the Avonto Bristol. The original lock was140 metres by 20 metres andvisiting ships were laden withtimber, petrol, grain, and inlater year's phosphorus andcoal.

Trade and tourism were on theup, increased by the newly builtsingle line broad gauge railwaytrack which linked PortisheadPier to Bristol. Portishead hadbecome a popular destinationfor day-trippers and tourists,who would take advantage ofthe local bathing beaches andstand and view the many boats

which would wait in King Road just offthe pier for the tides to take them downchannel or up the Avon on theirapproach to Bristol. One of the familiarsights viewed from Portishead Pier wasthe Bristol Training Ship ‘Formidable’. Theold warship lay anchored off Portisheadfor nearly 40 years and throughout thattime gave nautical training to over 3,500poor and destitute boys to prepare themfor service in the Royal and MerchantNavies.

The land surrounding the docks wasinitially used as a granary and timberwharf. On the Western side of the dockstood Baileys mill, a landmark eight-storey building with it's accompanyingchimney. It was a flaking mill whichprocessed grain for both the brewingindustry and to make cattle feed. In1911 the mill suffered a near fatal fire,which caused much damage andsmouldered for 4 days. The localbrigades struggled to bring the burningbuilding under control, so as soon asthe tide permitted, the Bristol salvagevessel 'Bulldog' entered the dock andpumped 700 gallons of water perminute on to the burning building. The mill was finally demolished in the1950's to make way for Portishead 'B'power station.

In 1926 construction started onPortishead 'A' power station on theland behind the mill. Coal-firedgeneration of electricity began in 1929

and supplied the whole of Bristol, NorthSomerset and part of South Somerset. In1937 the first tall stack was added,standing 350 feet high. After the wargenerating capacity was increased bythe addition of a second tall stack. Inthe 1950's work began on theconstruction of Portishead 'B' powerstation and stacks 3 & 4 were erected,383 feet high. The chimneys themselvesand the smoke they produced were afamiliar landmark for miles around andcould be seen clearly from the Welshcoast. When the Somerset coalfieldfinally closed in 1972 the power stationwas converted to oil, however the costof oil was on the increase and thePortishead stations were then only usedas standby generators. Portishead 'A'was closed in 1976 followed by 'B' in1982. Over the years ash and clinkerfrom the Power Stations have been usedto raise ground levels around the dockso that it is no longer possible to see theoriginal shape and size of the old tidalpill.

On the east side of the dock, theAlbright and Wilson phosphorus workswere built during the 1950s to processimported phosphate rock and convert itto liquid phosphorus. This processrequired a high use of electricity, supplied by the Portishead power stations and when the cost of oil rose inthe 70s, so did the price of the electricity. The implications were enormous and production was transferred to Newfoundland whereprocessing costs were lower. Portisheadbecame used as a transfer and distribution station, handling the liquidphosphorus that was brought to thedocks aboard the Albright ships theExplorer and the Pioneer. The shipswere fitted out with large tanks encasedin heated jackets to keep the phosphorus in a liquid state. This was

then transferred to holding tanks readyfor distribution. The decommissioningof the site was a lengthy process thattook about 4 years culminating in thedemolition and clearance of site in 1999in readiness for the re-development ofthe docks.

Commercial shipping ceased using thedocks in 1992 and although there wasstill marine traffic passing on route toand from the Royal Portbury Dock andAvonmouth, the only visiting boats toPortishead were yachts and small pleasure craft owned by local residents.The docks were derelict and after a program of demolition the site wascleared in readiness for the exciting newPort Marine development to evolve.While construction of town houses andluxury apartments began on the westside of the dock work began on thenew Marina, the centre piece of the£400 million development. A new lockmeasuring 40 metres by 9 metres wasbuilt within the old lock barrel withstate of the art gates and HMI control.The first phase of the pontoons and theberth holders facilities were installedready for the grand opening in May2001.

For more energetic visitors to the marina and within easy walking distance is the Parish Wharf LeisureCentre with gym, courts and a

swimming pool. Alternatively, the footpaths through Eastwood lead toBattery Point, the Lake Grounds and the start of the coast path to Clevedon.Portishead’s Open Air Pool is situated atthe Northern end of the Lake Groundsand throughout the summer months,you can take the opportunity to sit inthe sun whilst enjoying a stunning viewof the Bristol Channel from the terraces. Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve can befound to the East of the Marina. Thisarea of land, previously known as “theAshlands”, has been redeveloped andthe large pools and ponds are nowhome to a variety of animals.

Provisions can be purchased from theMy Local store at the northern end ofthe marina and this also provides thenearest cash point, should funds berequired. At the head of the marina isWaitrose supermarket, which has both acash point and a pharmacy. From there,the town centre is just a 2 minute walkaway and has further supermarkets andgrocers for general supplies. Most of theHigh Street banks and building societieshave branches in the High Street andthe new town library offers an internetcafé, books, and DVD’s.

Portishead benefits from great access tothe Motorway networks, being just 3miles from Junction 19 on the M5. Aregular bus service runs throughout theday from Portishead to Bristol and thesurrounding area, bus timetables andtelephone numbers for the local taxicompanies are available from theMarina office. Mainline train stations atBristol Temple Meads and BristolParkway serve the area and air flights todestinations in Europe and beyond canbe taken from Bristol InternationalAirport.”

Swansea – 61 NMWales’ second largest city, situated onthe North shore of the Bristol Channel,Swansea offers another interesting portof call for local sailors. The Marinaprovides sheltered and fully servicedvisitor berths and with the city centrejust a short walk from the Marina,there is plenty to entertain everyone.The Marina is reached via passagethrough the River Tawe Barrage Lockwhich operates on request 4.5 hourseither side of HW. Plan your passage toarrive at Sharpness no earlier than 1hour before HW and no later than HWat Sharpness. After passing through thelock, you enter the start of theGloucester and Sharpness canal whichcan be navigated easily up into theheart of the historic Gloucester Docks. Bristol – 8.5 NMBristol’s Historic Harbour is situated 7miles up stream of the mouth of theriver Avon. It is a locked harbour atthe heart of the city which gives easyaccess to shops, restaurants, theatres,cafes, bars and all the entertainmenta city has to offer.

Visitor moorings are available in eitherthe Floating Harbour or Bristol Marinaand it is advisable to arrange a berth priorto arrival. You should plan your passageto arrive at the Cumberland Basin locksfrom 2.5 hours before HW to 15 minutesbefore HW. Call City Docks Radio, lowpower, on Channel 14 for lockinginstructions.

Bristol Harbour affords a uniquewaterside environment and during themain boating season there are a varietyof exciting water activities andcompetitions taking place culminatingin the renowned Bristol HarbourRegatta. Watchet – 30 NMThe Somerset port of Watchet has beenrevitalised with the opening of theMarina in July 2001. The old harbourwhich was infrequently visited, nowboasts a 240 berth marina accessed via atidal flap gate 2.5 hours either side ofHW.

The marina is situated in the heart ofWatchet and makes an ideal place forvisiting yachts and motor boats. Thebroad Esplanade runs along the lengthof the Marina and gives way to thepretty, narrow streets of the town.

Minehead – 34 NMMinehead offers a small shelteredretreat along the beautiful Somersetcoastline. The drying harbour can beaccessed 2 hours either side of HW andoffers good shelter, although theHarbour does get crowded throughoutthe holiday season. Porlock Weir – 36 NMPorlock Weir is one of the many smallharbours on the South shore of theBristol Channel. Access to thispicturesque little harbour is 1.5 hourseither side of high water. The dryingharbour is entered via gates (usuallyopen) and offers good shelter for vesselsable to take the ground. Smaller vesselsunable to take the ground can lie afloatin a small pool (1m) outside the dockentrance. Ilfracombe – 57 NMLying on the South side of Lantern Hill and hidden from the sea, Ilfracombe is abeautiful seaside resort with a smallharbour which can be identified by theprominent white houses and thePromenade Pier.

The Inner and outer harbours areaccessible in almost all weather from 2-3hours either side of HW. The innerharbour dries and is suitable for vesselsable to take the ground or there are a

few visitor moorings in the outerharbour, which is normally accessible,except at LW springs.

Ilfracombe has a good selection ofshops, cafes and pubs to entertain youand the town and harbour get busythroughout the holiday season. Lundy Island – 75 NMLocated off the North Devon coast,Lundy is the largest island in the BristolChannel and is a must for anyonecruising in the Channel. The mainanchorage is located in the bay at theSouth East of the island and providesgood shelter in winds from the Westand South West. Lundy itself is afascinating place and well worth thetrip ashore. Padstow - 110 NMSituated on the River Camel two milesfrom the open sea, the picturesque portof Padstow provides the only lockedharbour on the North Cornish coast.Access to the Inner Harbour whichprovides total shelter is via a flap gatethat opens HW +/- 2 hours. Once athriving sea port exporting tin andcopper, commercial activities are nowconfined to fishing and supportingleisure activities. Lock BookingsWe ask all customers to book outwardbound locks, you can do this for up to oneweek in advance. Outward bound lockswill run on the hour and half past thehour with hourly intervals at the beginning and end of the tide. Inboundlocks will run quarter to and quarter pastthe hour with hourly intervals at thebeginning and end of the tide.

Before Going To Sea� Weather Forecasts – Check the weather

forecast before going to sea. The inshore waters forecast is available from the marina office.

� Yacht and Boat Safety Scheme – You can register your boat details with the Coastguard to assist with search and rescue using the CG66 form available online.

� ALWAYS UNPLUG! Do not leave live leads on the pontoons.

� Training in Seamanship and Navigation – Training will help you get more enjoyment from your boating whilst improving safety. The RYA offer a range of practical and theory based courses. Information on our local training centre an be found on page 12.

� Cruising Plans – Please advise the marina office of your cruising plans andthe date and time of your expected return.

� Sea Safety – Make sure you are properly equipped and you know whatto do in an emergency. Visit www.rnli.org.uk/seasafety

Locking Safety & Procedure

� Call the marina on VHF Channel 80, callsign “Portishead Quays Marina” to request access into the lock before leaving your berth. Maintain a listening watch on Channel 80 when manoeuvring in the marina and throughout locking operation.

� Only enter the lock when instructed to do so and ensure the gates are fully open and the green, white, green lights are displayed.

� Enter and depart at a ‘Dead Slow’ speed.

� Proceed as far forward as possible toallow room for vessels following. Ensure your vessel has appropriate lines and fenders both sides and be prepared to raft up.

� Secure your vessel with bow and stern lines and springs throughout locking operation.

� Lock ladders are for emergency and staff use only.

Tidal AccessUnder normal conditions, for a moder-ate drafted vessel (1.5m) the lock will give access of H.W. +/- 4.5hrs on mean neaps and H.W. +/- 3.5 hrson mean springs.

Lights and SignalsAll vessels must observe traffic light signals as follows. The entrance to the Marinais marked by two fixed vertical lights in addition to the traffic lights.

Electrical Safety Supply� Don’t forget ALWAYS UNPLUG! Do

not leave live leads on the pontoons.� Disconnect your power lead at the

supply bollard to avoid trailing a live end. When connecting to the supply, attach the lead at the boat end first and work back to the supply bollard.

� Inspect your leads and plugs for damage regularly.

� Please report any damaged or faulty supply equipment to the marina office.

It is the skippers decision to proceed to sea. Please ensurethe safety of your vessel andcrew. Monitor VHF Ch.12 forshipping movements and at alltimes in the King Road channel.

Communication As you navigate this area of the Bristol Channel youshould keep a listening watch on VHF Channel 12 tolearn the whereabouts and actions of other vessels,commercial vessels will call at regular intervalsthroughout their passage. Small craft are onlyrequired to call Bristol VTS on VHF Channel 12, callsign “Bristol VTS” when outbound from the RiverAvon at Nelson Point for traffic information. Flotillasof vessels should arrange for the lead vessel to calland then pass the information to the other craft via adifferent VHF channel. As you approach PortisheadQuays you should contact the Marina on VHF Channel80, call sign “Portishead Quays Marina”. You will beadvised of the next available lock and should followany instructions given by the Berthing Master.

NavigationIt is essential that all vessels navigating in this part ofthe Bristol Channel are aware of the particularly largetidal range with its associated flows and the shippingto and from the Avonmouth and Portbury docks. Youshould consult Admiralty charts 1176 and 1859 ortheir equivalents, and pilot books where available.Tide tables are given towards the back of this handbook.

3Portishead Quays Marina

Bristol VTSSignal Station

As you approach the Marina entrance from the Northeast you will see the pier on your starboard side. Ifyour approach is in darkness, you will be able to see the isophase green light at the end of the pier. At theentrance to the lock, two vertical fixed port and starboard lights are displayed. Passage through the lock iscontrolled by a traffic control system on the port side. The traffic lights display three vertical reds to mean“vessels shall not proceed”, or green, white, green to mean “vessels may proceed on instruction from themarina control”. This conforms to the IALA standard, and should be observed by all vessels using the lock.

International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at SeaIt is advisable to have a good knowledge of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisionsat Sea, particularly the following abbreviated rules.Rule 5 Lookout – Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out.Rule 6 Safe Speed – Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take properand effective action to avoid collision.Rule 7 Risk of Collision – Every vessel shall use all available means appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions to determine if risk of collision exists. If there is any doubt such risk shall bedeemed to exist.Rule 8 Action to Avoid a Collision – Any action to avoid a collision should be positive, made in ampletime and with due regard to good seamanship.Rule 9 Narrow Channel – Small ships, sail or power must NOT impede passage of larger vessels con-strained by their draft.Rule 34 Manoeuvring and Warning Signals – If a large vessel is manoeuvring in sight of another vesselthey will indicate their intention by using the following warning signals on the ship’s whistle:• one short blast to mean “I am altering my course to starboard”• two short blasts to mean “I am altering my course to port”• three short blasts to mean “ I am operating astern propulsion”• five short rapid blasts to mean “make your intentions clear”

WeatherDuring periods of restricted visibility recreational craft should call Bristol VTS (VHF Channel 12) to obtainshipping movement information prior to making way. In these conditions a call to Bristol VTS should alsobe made prior to crossing the shipping channel. When the wind is against the tide a short steep sea candevelop in King Road. Periods of North Westerly, Northerly and North Easterly winds can also produce difficult sea conditions for recreational craft.

We offer information to our bertholders to maintain anduse their craft and equipment in an environmentallyresponsible fashion, with special reference to:-

� Oil and Fuel� Cleaning and Maintenance� Anti-fouling and Marine Paints� Waste Management� Resource Efficiency� Effects on Wildlife


Maintain your motor – by regularly servicing your mechanicalequipment your vessels efficiency willbe optimised. This will save engineemissions, engine noise and reduceyour fuel bills.

Don’t pollute the water – drips and spillages have a seriouscumulative effect on the marineenvironment. Portable fuel tanks andspare fuel containers should be filledaway from the waters edge. Don’toverfill tanks. Provide drip trays andabsorbent material. Dispose of usedengine oil within the waste oil tanksin the marina.

Quay Marinas Ltd are keen toencourage and promoteenvironmental awareness amongstcustomers of it’s marinas. Pleaseconsider the needs of theenvironment for the good of all.

Be aware of wildlife – shoreline habitats support a hugevariety of species that can bevulnerable to disturbance. Reduceyour speed and check your wash insensitive areas.

Don’t be a noisy neighbour –roaring engines, flapping halyardsand loud music can disturb otherusers of the marina and nearbyresidents. Do what you can to reducenoise pollution to a minimum.

Overboard is out – litter spoils the appearance of themarina and harms the environment.Bag your rubbish and dispose of it inthe marina bins. It is an offenceunder the Merchant Shipping(Prevention of Pollution by Garbage)Regulations 1988 to dump rubbishin a river or at sea.

Don’t flush – untreated sewage from vessels isunsightly and a health hazard toother water users. Don’t pollute themarina environment use the shorefacilities whenever possible.

Paint a pretty picture – take care with anti-fouling. Ensurethat all anti-fouling scrapings areswept up and disposed of. Try not toallow them to enter the water. Wherepossible use products that arebiodegradable, phosphate andchlorine free.

Recycle if you can – use Portishead Marinas recyclingfacilities if possible. Portishead QuaysMarina maintains facilities forrecycling waste oil,batteries, mixedglass, cans and paper.

Portishead Cruising Club(Founded 1932)

Located at Pump Square in the village ofPill, the club is just 10 minutes from theMarina by road. “Down Along” is theclub’s motto, and is an abbreviation of thesailing directions from Pill, where the clubmoorings are located. Since the PilotCutters were based at Pill, it has beenused as an euphemism for ‘going sailing’.

There is an active, year round racingcalendar, with most races limited to twohours either side of high water, there arehowever several all day races, and anannual ‘offshore’ two day race. Theseraces are an excellent way to polishsailing skills, so novices are activelywelcomed.

Most weekends during the seasonoffer a cruise, when new members canlearn the pilotage of the Bristol Channelin the safety of company. Portishead Small Boat and Sea Angling ClubFor more than 20 years the club hasbrought together small boat ownersand their crews to encourage andfoster interest in the sport of seaangling. The opening of the marina hasensured ease of access to fabulous in-shore fishing throughout the year withspecies ranging from prime bass andcod to the hard fighting conger eel andspecimen sized thornback ray.

Members of the club are able to takeadvantage of shared experiences andwhile at sea clearly recognise the safetybenefits of fishing with colleagues inclose proximity and with radiocommunication should difficulties arise.For those with a more competitivestreak opportunities arise on a regularbasis to take part in club competitionswhere friendly rivalry results in theawarding of prizes for the biggestcatch.

As a club we meet on a monthly basisat the Oceans Coffee Shop, next to theboat yard, to conduct business, to listento the occasional guest speaker and toenlighten and amuse each other withtales of fish and fishing - real andimaginary!

The Portishead & BristolLifeboat The newest RNLI Lifeboat Station is nowoperational here in Portishead. After anofficial adoption of the Portishead &Bristol Lifeboat on 24th April, following19 years serving the community as anindependent service, the volunteershosted along with senior executives fromthe RNLI, a huge Opening Ceremony inJune to mark the occasion.

With over 400 invited guests, more than1000 members of the local communitygathered to witness the occasion.Children from the local schools designedbunting and local pubs provided food forall the guests to enjoy on the day. Theceremony ended with the volunteer crewlaunching the Atlantic class lifeboat fromthe new £1.9M facility. The build took 13months to complete and was funded bydonations, fundraising campaigns and thelocal community working hard to raisemoney.

It provides the volunteer crew state of theart changing rooms, personal safety kitand equipment, toilets and a shower forwhen they return from shouts. The boatroom provides a full view of the lifeboatand launching equipment when they arenot out on an emergency. Upstairs in theJG Room, named in memory of the lateJohn Gittings, Chairman, Trustee,

John Comer had a cracking day afloatwith two super cod which he caughtwhile out fishing on his Quicksilver 640,named ' Amy May'. John is a keenangler and chairman of the PortisheadSmall Boats Sea Angling Club.


Fundraising Director, Treasurer and friend ofthe volunteers for 17 years, offers a trainingroom, kitchen facilities and an office whichhas never been available to the volunteersbefore. There is also a shop, where you cango and buy local RNLI hats, pens, mugs,calendars and teddies to name a few things.It has already proved to be a massive successwith schools and numerous groups visit thestation with 4 - 99 year olds giving the RNLIthe thumbs up.

With 24 shouts already attended (at the timeof going to print) in 2015, the final part ofthe puzzle for the volunteers was thedelivery of their brand new Atlantic 85inshore Lifeboat, My Lady Anne inSeptember. Donated by donor Mr Wraith, hesaid 'This Lifeboat is a fitting tribute to bothmy late wife Anne and to the people whowill crew her. I am proud to be associatedwith the RNLI, and this Lifeboat is a truedemonstration, that out of sadness, comes awonderful lasting memory of Anne’s life.'

The volunteers are looking forward to anumber of fundraising events for 2016, ifanyone would like to join the team or if youwould like to hold an event on behalf of theRNLI, just get in touch. Marina The Marina is manned 24 hours a day andmaintains a listening watch on Channel 80,call sign ‘Portishead Quays Marina’. Atnight and during weekends the dutyBerthing Master may be on the pontoonsor making his patrols, during this time theoffice will be locked, please be patient hewill return as soon as possible.Alternatively he can be contacted on VHFCh 80 or call the Marina Mobile on 07764635877.

VisitorsVisiting boats are asked to moor port sideto, where possible, when entering theMarina lock. Marina staff will endeavourto meet each vessel with information andberth details. Once safely berthed, thevessel’s skipper should check in atreception.

Marina AccessAccess to the pontoons and berth holder’sfacilities is controlled by an electronic system. Access cards are available for customers and can be collected from reception The security access code will bechanged frequently, for the latest codeplease contact the Marina Office.

SlipwayOur slipway is available for self launching.For safety reasons there is a comprehensivelaunch and recovery protocol. Full detailscan be obtained from the marina office.

SecurityAccess control to the pontoons and berthholders facilities, CCTV and staff patrols 24hours a day are there for the security of themarina estate. Please help in ensuring thesecurity around the Marina by being vigilant and reporting any faults or suspicions to the Marina office as quickly aspossible.

Toilets and ShowersThese are located on the ground floor ofthe Lock Control Building and within theHall & Woodhouse Building at ChandlerySquare. Additional facilities can also befound within the boatyard. Access iscontrolled for your own security. Thefacilities are available at all times, exceptduring cleaning. Please do not use yourboat’s marine toilet whilst the vessel is inthe marina.

Boatyard OperationsThe mobile boat hoist can lift a maximum of 35 tonnes. We offer a fullboat lifting service including hull pressure washing, the stepping and un-stepping of masts and storage forapproximately 100 vessels. Full details areavailable from the marina office.

LaundryA laundry room is situated on the groundfloor of the Lock Control Building andwithin the berth holder’s facilities in theHall & Woodhouse Building at ChandlerySquare. The coin operated machines areaccessible at any time. Access tags, soappowder and an iron are available from theMarina office.

Drinking Water Allow water to run for approximately 30seconds before filling your tanks. Ownersof vessels must supply their own waterhoses.

TrolleysTrolleys are provided for the convenienceof all the berth holders. They are lockedand will require a £1 coin to release them.Please be considerate and return them tothe trolley park after use.

RubbishDomestic waste and recycling bins areprovided at the bottom of the pontoonaccess ramps. Waste and recycling facilities are also available at the rear ofthe Lock Control Building and within theBoatyard

InsuranceIt is a requirement of the marina’s termsand conditions that all vessels berthed orstored ashore within the marina site shouldmaintain fully comprehensive and Publicliability insurance (where appropriate) coverto the value of £3 million.

Water and ElectricityA 240v A/C supply is available on thepontoons together with fresh water.Electricity top-up is available from reception.We are unable to refund unused electricity.Only cards purchased from the Marina officewill activate the electrical bollards. Whilst weendeavour to maintain a permanent supply,we cannot be held responsible for theconsequences of any loss of power.

Mooring and FenderingPlease ensure that your craft is correctlymoored and fendered, with proper bowand stern lines, and well placed springs.We cannot accept responsibility for anydamages resulting from inadequate16 portishead yearbook 2016QUAY

Berth Holder & Visitor Car ParkingThe control and management of theMarinas Car Parks has been passed overto Parking Eye Ltd, an independentcompany who monitor the Lock Controland Chandlery Square hoist dockparking areas by number platerecognition cameras. It is thereforevitally important that berth holdersregister their vehicle details with themarina office to benefit from freeparking. All non-registered vehicles using theChandlery Square hoist dock apron willincur a significant parking charge.Visitors must pay for their parking at theLock Control car park. Marina berth holders are able to parktheir vehicles at the following locationsaround the marina.

In Emergency: Emergency SOS cabinets are provided on each pier. They contain alifebuoy, fire extinguisher and first aid kit. There is a fire alarm at the bottom of the accessramp. The position of safety equipment is shown on the plan above.

Falling inThere are fixed rescue ladders oneach pontoon leg. Please locate theposition of your nearest ladder – youmay need it one day! The ladders aremarked with a yellow flag for addedvisibility.

Speed RestrictionsPlease observe the “DEAD SLOW”speed limit and do not createexcessive wash within the confinesof the marina.

WinterPlease take extra care during coldand icy conditions. The access rampsand adjacent areas are regularlysalted during frosty periods. Saltcan be provided to customers whowish to salt their pontoon.

Contractors Operating on Marina PremisesBerth holders are welcome to carryout minor running repairs on theircraft, subject always to the marinaterms and conditions. Berth holdersmay invite any bona fidetradesperson on site for the purposesof repairing or maintaining theirboat. However, please note thatcontractors must:

� Provide details of their third party / employers and Public (ifappropriate) liability cover.

� Sign in at the marina office priorto commencing work and pay the appropriate contractors fee.

� Sign out after completing theirwork.

Berth holders should be aware thatin the event of injury or damagebeing caused on the marina estate bya contractor who has not satisfiedthe above requirements, the berthholder's insurance will be deemed to

be liable. Berth holders wishing todiscuss the above in more detailshould arrange an appointment withthe marina manager.

SwimmingSwimming is not permitted within the confines of the marina.

DivingDiving operations are onlypermitted with the expresspermission of the Marina Manager.Prior to permission being granted,the following information must becompleted and evidence provided ofthe appropriate qualifications forthe dive being undertaken.

Fuel Berth & FuellingAs with any fuel installation, safetyis of paramount importance and weask all customers to obey thefollowing rules.

� No smoking or naked lights.� Engines must be switched off.� Mobile phones and VHF must not

be used.� Fuel must only be served into

appropriate containers.� No fuel must be brought onto

the pontoons� All fuelling must take place from

the company's supply at the fuelberth.

Good Safety Practice� Take care on the pontoons,

particularly in adverse conditions. � Do not cycle or run on the

pontoons.� When walking down the access

ramps use the hand rails providedfor your safety.

� Ensure young children and non-swimming adults wear lifejacketswhilst on the pontoons.

� Do not allow children to “ride” introlleys.

� Please do not use barbecues onthe pontoons.

� Do not leave fuel cans (empty orfull), gas bottles or otherhazardous or flammable materialon the pontoons. Vessels mustnot be refuelled on the marinapremises except at our fuel berthand from our supply.

� Please report any damaged ordefective equipment immediately.

Marina SOS StationsThese are positioned at intervals onthe Marina pontoons, the closest pilecaps are marked in red and whitewith ‘SOS Station’. Each stationhouses a fire extinguisher and lifering. Rescue ladders are positionednearby, locations for these can befound on the Marina plan on page 18&19. It is very important that allMarina users familiarise themselveswith their locations.

The marina boatyard provides boat lift-ing and secure hardstanding for boatsup to 35 tonnes. For information ourhoist dock is 5.7 metres wide.Electricity (240v, 16amp) and water areavailable. Annual contract berth holderscan benefit from a maximum of 8 weekshard standing, taken throughout theircontract term, at no additional cost(subject to availability). Beyond 8weeks all berth holders will becharged at contract holders rate

General Practice� All use of the boatyard is subject to

the Terms & Conditions of Marina Use; which are displayed in the marina office and boatyard.

� Please book your re-launch with the marina office giving adequate notice.

� Do not pour oil, oily water, paint or thinners into the drains.

� If scraping paint/antifoul off please sheet off under your vessel and collect all scrapings for disposal.

� Boat storage ashore will be limited toa maximum period of 6 months unless prior arrangement is agreed inwriting by the marina manager.

� All vessels within the boatyard must carry appropriate insurance. Please see Terms & Conditions.

� All trailers must be locked, clearly identifiable and keys must be handedto the marina office.

� All lifting operations, chocking and shoring of vessels to be undertaken by marina staff.

� All contractors are required to have avalid 'permit to work' and must sign in prior to commencing work.

� Repairs of a major nature are only to beundertaken by authorised contractors.

� No 'hot work' e.g. welding or grindingto be undertaken without the written permission of the marina manager.

� Please keep the area around your boat clear. All equipment / materials must be stored aboard your boat. All debris to be removed at the end of each working day. Recycling facilities for waste oil, oil filters and batteries are located in the boatyard.

Security

� The Boatyard is only accessible 0700 to 1900 all week.

� Do not leave detachable electronic equipment or tools onboard.

� Ladders should not be left in place when not in use and should be securely locked to your cradle.

Boatyard Safety

The boatyard is an active workingarea. In order to protect yourself andothers please work safely and observethe following safety rules:-

� Power tools should be used with caution. Electricity can kill.

� Hull supports are not to be moved other than by marina staff. If you require a support to be moved please arrange this with the marina office.

� Children are not permitted to 'play' in the boatyard and must be supervised at all times.

� Liquids or flammable material must not be stored under boats.

� Fire extinguishers are positioned around the yard. Please familiarise yourself with their location.

� Check power cables are in good condition and of an approved type for outdoor use. Please ensure cables do not pose a trip hazard andremove all cables when not in use.

� Customers are reminded of the hazards of working at height.

� Ensure that ladders are properly secured to your boat.

� Minimise walking on deck whilst ashore.

� Where possible work from proper staging and platforms.

� Take care in wet & icy conditions.

� Ensure that windage is reduced to a minimum.

� Remove furling head sails prior to lifting.

� Remove sails, spray hoods and dodgers.

� Rest booms on deck to prevent "boom wobble".

� We recommend that you unstep your mast. Owners who leave masts standing do so at their own risk.

Conditions of use:This tariff should be read in conjunction with the Marina Terms and Conditions of Use, Refund & Berth Policy and the Berthing Licence. 1 All Contracts are subject to availability and all fees are payable in advance. Exceptions are berth holders with contracts of 6 months or more who may pay monthly by instalments subject to a 5.5%

administration surcharge.2 An Advanced Payment Discount of 2.5% is offered on contracts of 6 months or more if paid in full before the commencement of the contract term.3 An administration charge of 20% may be applied to all casual (non contract) charges which are invoiced

against any vessel having left the marina prior to settlement of account.4 Berthing charges include harbour dues, potable fresh water and access to Marina facilities.5 Multihull vessels may be subject to a 25% surcharge dependent on berth availability. Such surcharge is at the manager’s discretion.6 Commercial vessels may be subject to a 25% surcharge either at the manager’s discretion or as a result of charges levied by Local or Statutory Authorities.7 L.O.A.
