One side of the building facing the main street has been unfolded com-pletely, and the business area presents only a few of columns, developing a continuous extended picture seen from interior and exterior of this building.

Meanwhile, the facade implies the structure of the building and the glass walls provide a subtle direction, and they had a sense of implicit invitation.

The client that goes to this café, forgets the noisy street and finds a quiet space with no limits, that pretends give a different shopping experience.

This project is about a café which is located at the Central Business District of Changsha City. As a later comer, in such a place with all sorts of modern apartments and edifices, I choose the simple form of glass boxes to deal with the aesthetic fatigue about the diverse modeling. The continuous external glass walls attract pedestrians’ atten-tion as well as indicating the function of the building. And the central sec-tion of these glass boxes is a courtyard which is rounded by a few glass walls.

Also, the whole building looks like a chocolate cake because I intend to make the customers have an appetite for a late afternoon tea.

The lights and the materials are claim-ing for its relevance. While the pure white furniture exposed to the sun, the floor made of brick and marble reflects the surrounding of the interior. And it would be a great pleasure that the cus-tomers could enjoy this moment.

Two Lombardy poplar trees are plant-ed in the yard to provide seasonally changing expression. Taking the glass walls as mirrors while sunshine as cam-era, I have drawn a lively scenery in the center of the yard using some stones under the tree and changing shadow shaped by the various elements.

House is undoubtedly considered as the most common, important and special architectural form. The conscious behavior of dwelling symbolizes the beginning of construction activity in human history. At the same time, the evolution and development of dwelling space chronicles the growth of human civilization.

Family is the “cell” of human society and house is the “container” of family so in many countries, architects are educated to begin their careers from designing small houses. After gradu-ating from schools, students majoring in architectural design are required to communicate with clients about their requirements and work on site in order to improve the abilities to perceive life and deal with materials and details.

Unfortunately, people do not have their own land under the specific land pol-icy in mainland, China, and thus they cannot design their own houses com-pletely. However, architects manage to create "dream home" for clients to realize some of their dreams for living. In addition, more and more architects endeavor our to improve the living en-vironment and to satisfy modern living requirements.

From my perspective, houses are more a project that makes common people's dreams towards countryside life come true than a design work that belongs to architects. Of course, I am one of those who desire to possess their own houses. Since I am a calm guy, I intend to build a steady, durable and sustainable house.

16

Page 17: Portforlio- QIN Zhen

This house is located in the county of Changsha, to the north of Changsha City. Sitting on a wide open sloping site, which has a panoramic view towards Xiangjiang River and the surrounding landscape, the house has an open viewing deck, the ex-terior staircase and the roof garden.

One of the key features of this building is the staircase. The staircase divides the building into the interior part and the ex-terior part and stands out from the entire structure, making the two parts vertically detached forming a obvious margin. An-other focus of this building is the large area of the glass walls which enable the master to obtain a wonderful view every-day. Meanwhile, in front of the challenge of global climate changes, I decide to cre-ate an energy-saving architecture which has a roof garden. And I use Autodesk Revit Architecture software to simulate the energy consumption of the building.

In addition, the architectural language by using local materials and simple “non-ex-perimental” tectonic skills is meant to blend the “artificial” into nature and lo-cal culture. Also, the construction team would be local farmers and the budget of the entire project would not be exaggerate.

So it is “secured” and “separated” physi-cally from the “outside” world by design elements such as the exterior staircase, stone wall, reflective pool and the trans-parent glass walls, yet it is open visually towards the outside environment.

In general, the private houses should be transparent, energy-saving, sustainable, durable and steady.

system – separating traffic by mode, with a pedestrian path system that does not cross any major roads at grade.

In this way, spaces are fully utilized, and different rooms, event spaces and circulation are three dimensionally organized. The new campus is an inte-gral architecture with several sections including – sequentially from the east entrance to the west entrance – front plaza, main pedestrian, public court-yard, library, administration section, teaching section, students’ dormitory section and cafeteria section.

In addition, based on the understand-ing of the traditional Chinese garden, the landscape plans look like some-thing arranged by accident and there is no strict structure here, but the stu-dents would enjoy the real life in this campus.

The new medical college is located around a hill which dominates the scenery of the site. So I take advantage of this feature and attempt to establish both horizontal and vertical landscape axes. Also, I intend to set up a traffic system with high accessibility.

According to Radburn Idea, which was created by Mr. Clarence Stein and Mr. Henry Wright, I decide to create an integrated self-sustaining campus, sur-rounded by greenbelts, specialized au-tomotive thoroughfares(main linking roads, serviced lanes for direct access to buildings, and urban roads), and a complete separation of auto and pedes-trian traffic.

Meanwhile, referring to Clarence Perry, the father of the Neighborhood Unit theory, I design the new campus as a residential area, united by a linking

urban Design for Hua long CHi bloCk,CHangsHa City

Page 23: Portforlio- QIN Zhen

Urban design in short is an art of de-signing places for people and is one of the important elements in urban plan-ning. It concerns about the total visual effect of building masses, connections with people and places, creation of spaces for movements, urban ameni-ties and public realm, and the process for improving the overall town scape.

In this project, the site locates in the Central Business District of Chang-sha City. But there are several historic blocks surrounded by shanty towns in this area. So it is necessary to trans-form the shanty towns and protect the historic buildings as well. And my task was to ask for citizens’ opinions and make reasonable planning on the cur-rent plot.

In China, most old cities are facing reconstruction. However, the problem remain far from being solved that har-monic symbiosis between protection and renewal as well as the tradition and the modern in the historic block.

In this project, I focus on the land-use transformation and try to establish the relationship between historic block and its surrounding. Starting with the point of investigating the Changsha’s traditional landscape and courtyard types as well as obeying the princi-ples according to Planning Standards And Guidelines, I intend to promote Changsha’s image and to enhance the quality of our built environment by transforming the shanty towns of the historic block to modern residents and commercial centers.
