MontageDescription: An inspirational montage created through the use of typography and the blending of two images.
Program: Adobe Photoshop
Date Completed: February 14, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Blend two or more images using masks, demonstrate skills in photoshop, apply typography skills
Process: I started by exploring different quotes and images that had a connection I could use. Once I narrowed down my choices, I opened Adobe Photoshop and set up the proper layers and a mask on one of them. I used the brush tool to bring the color back to my mask, then switched to my other tab with my second image. I used the lasso tool to select a specific section, then adjusted the feather to 100. I then clicked and dragged the window out next to my background image, and used the move tool to select the lassoed portion and insert it into my design. I adjusted the second image to where I wanted it and then, using the proper layers, adjusted my vibrance and sharpness. I also used the blur tool to make the “edges” appear even more woven into the design. I then brought in my text onto a new layer and chose a font that was simple yet striking, and connected well with the overall message. I then adjusted the spacing, alignment, color, and size of the text.
BrochureDescription: A two-sided (duplex) folding brochure.
Program: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Photoshop
Date Completed: March 28, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Process: I set up the gateway fold in Adobe InDesign using document setup and guides. I split my first page into the two halves of the front with the back sandwiched in between. I used my second page for the inside body copy, keeping it lined up with the guides to be folded on. I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator. I chose a theatre curtain because it clearly symbolized by topic and held opportunity for great color choices. I edited the photo of the dancer in Adobe Photoshop. I wrapped text around my logo by using the Window – Wrap Text tool.

LetterheadDescription: Letterhead designed using a personally cre-ated logo.
Program: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
Date Completed: March 3, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space. Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process: I first created a logo using Adobe Illustrator with simple shapes and text. I used the pathfinder tool, grouping, and the shape builder tool. I also changed the brushstroke to charcoal-feather. Once I had the logo, I opened two new documents in Adobe InDesign and inserted my .AI logo. I brought in my logo, information, lines, and created a watermark using the same method I did to create my logo.

Event AdDescription: A color full-bleed event ad to promote a vol-unteer opportunity for a very good cause using only a scan-ner and Microsoft Word.
Program: Microsoft Word
Date Completed: January 31, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Comprehend image sizing. Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process: I started by searching for an image, and in the Economist magazine I found the one I wanted. I scanned the image, making sure the resolution was strong, and then put the photo in Microsoft Word to being editing. I didn’t add any effects to the image, other than some cropping. I researched disaster relief online and decided to include American Red Cross as the sponsor of the event. After including the text, I fixed alignment and chose a font. I decided to use a red color to emphasize the girl’s shirt and create a good contrast while staying in tune with the message. After that I exported my design as a PDF, and then to a JPEG.

PhotodesignDescription: Demonstrate satisfactory photography and image editing skills. Incorporating image into a layout us-ing design principles.
Program: Adobe Photoshop & Adobe InDesign
Date Completed: February 7, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process: I started by taking photographs, later realiz-ing my photos did not have strong color schemes while attempting to edit, so I took more pictures and decided on a different image. I chose the picture I had that matched perfectly with a split complementary color scheme. I then downloaded my image into Adobe Photoshop and started with basic edits using layers, sharpness, vibrancy, and the stamp tool. I created a 8.5×11 layout that included my photo, text, and repeating design elements. I used the handy-dandy eye dropper to pick more exact colors.

Business CardDescription: Business card designed using a personally created logo.
Program: Adobe Illustrator & Adobe InDesign
Date Completed: March 3, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy. Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses orhyphens.
I created two boxes of the same size (3.5 x 2) for the front and back of the card. I brought in my logo for the back, and on the front added text with the appropriate information and then played around to find the right fonts and colors that would compliment the text in my logo.

FlierDescription: Black and white flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.
Program: Adobe InDesign
Date Completed: January 24, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process: I first make some sketches of possible layouts and design elements for the flier. Then I used my top sketch as a guide to create the flier in Adobe InDesign. I used gray in the title and for the textbox at the bottom to create repetition and rhythm, left a path of white space throughout, and chose specific fonts to emphasize the message.

LogosDescription: Three different versions of a logo for the same company.
Program: Adobe Illustrator
Date Completed: February 21, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Process: I started with some basic typography, looking for fonts that held contrast. I really wanted a silhouette of a dancer, and decided to make my own by using the lasso tool on an image. I brought that selection into my design and then added shapes and lines, as well as adjusting different character elements, to create the other logos.

Web PageDescription: Web page that describes the process by which I created my logo.
Program: Notepad++, Notepad, Photoshop
Date Completed: March 16, 2015
Course & Instructor: Comm 130 Sec. 1, Cory Kerr
Objectives/Skills: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 – 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Process: I started by opening my project for the logo in Adobe Illustrator, then I converted it to a .png file and saved it in my project folder. From there I downloaded basic HTML software and set up a basic website, inserting the image and a hyperlink into the site as well. I then learned and added basic CSS by linking a .css document in Notepad to Notepad++.
